    As part of activities to mark the 2024 Christmas celebration, the Bendi Development Association BDA, has presented award of honor to Hon Peter Akpanke, member representing Obudu/Bekwarra/Obanliku federal constituency.

    The award was presented at the member of parliament’s residence, Keting – Bendi, in Obanliku Local Government Area.

    The association used the opportunity to express gratitude to the MP for his numerous empowerment programmes as well as his people-centered representation, which have significant impact on the constituents.

    Presenting the award on behalf of the association, Chief Izabi, recognized Akpanke’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of his constituents, particularly through the provision of essential and accessible social amenities.

    Responding, Akpanke expressed gratitude for their support for him as one of the community members. He welcomed members of the Bendi Development Association (BDA) to his hometown, and expressed fulfillment having the association visit him for the celebration

    He reaffirmed his dedication to maintaining an open-door policy, and pledged to be accessible to his constituents and will respond promptly where he can to the plight of his people.

    Sideline of the visit was the presentation of bags of rice to the Bendi Development Association BDA, by Hon Akpanke.

    The Senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, has extended warm felicitations to his constituents and Christians worldwide on this year’s Christmas celebration.

    In a statement released to his media office, Senator Jarigbe urged everyone to embody the values of love, peace, humility, and sacrifice that the season signifies. He encouraged his constituents to make the most of the festive season, wishing them “a joyful, peaceful, and happy festive season.

    May your home be filled with love, laughter, and warmth, and may your Christmas be merry and bright, as the new year brings you hope, prosperity, and good health.”

    The lawmaker also called for understanding and patience, assuring that better days are ahead as the benefits of economic reforms begin to materialize. He expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support and wished them a joyous Christmas.

    “On behalf of my family, I wish you a joyous celebration and pray for a prosperous new year,” Senator Jarigbe added.

    Goodwill Message by Senator Representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Cross River State, on the Occasion of the 25th Anniversary of Unbroken Democracy in Nigeria.

    Fellow Nigerians,

    Respected Constituents,

    Ladies and Gentlemen,

    It is with immense pride and gratitude that I join all democrats to celebrate a remarkable milestone in our nation’s history – 25 years of unbroken democracy. This occasion provides us with a moment to reflect on our journey, honor those who paved the way, and reaffirm our commitment to the principles of democracy.

    First and foremost, let us pay tribute to the forefathers of our democracy. These courageous men and women fought tirelessly, many putting their lives on the line, to ensure that Nigeria could rise as a democratic nation. Their vision, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication laid the foundation upon which our democracy stands. We owe them an eternal debt of gratitude for their unparalleled contributions to our nation’s political evolution.

    In a special way, we must extend our heartfelt thanks to former President of Nigeria, His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. His patriotic and selfless act in 2015, when he handed over power without hesitation to the winner of the Presidential Election, was a watershed moment in our democratic history. By respecting the will of the people and ensuring a peaceful transition, Dr. Jonathan not only strengthened our fledgling democracy but also set a sterling example of leadership and statesmanship. His actions spoke volumes about his commitment to the principles of democracy and the future of Nigeria.

    As we celebrate this silver jubilee of our democratic journey, it is imperative to acknowledge that democracy is not merely a destination but an ongoing process that requires constant nurturing and vigilance. Our democracy must be enduring, and to achieve this, our leaders must emulate the exemplary patriotism demonstrated by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. The election results must always reflect the true will of the people, free from coercion and manipulation.

    To my fellow leaders, I urge you to always put Nigeria first. Our actions and decisions should be guided by the greater good of our nation and its citizens. Let us work together to uphold the values of transparency, accountability, and justice. By doing so, we will ensure that our democracy remains vibrant and resilient, capable of withstanding the tests of time.

    In conclusion, as we mark this 25th anniversary of unbroken democracy, let us renew our pledge to protect and advance the democratic ideals that have brought us this far. Let us honor the sacrifices of our forebears and the exemplary actions of leaders like Dr. Goodluck Jonathan by committing ourselves to a future where the voice of every Nigerian is heard, respected, and valued.

    Sen Jarigbe Agom’s EASTER MESSAGE TO HIS CONSTITUENTS

    My dear brothers and sisters, a new dawn has come. Weeping indeed, endured for the night, but look, joy has come in the morning. The Lord has Risen, indeed Alleluia!

    As a people, we no longer stand and weep at the grave. The grave is empty. The chains are broken. Our Lord and saviour has outsmarted the conquerors of Good good Friday. Behold Easter is here and we remained Unconquered.

    As we celebrate the death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus christ, let us allow the grace of the season penetrate every fabric of our lives. Let’s embrace each other in love, peace, unity and progress. Let’s resist the devil and his tendencies to dominate, conquer destroy us.

    We should never forget that he that the Lord has set free is free indeed.

    The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Sen. Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor had yesterday, 13th of September 2020 presented cash prizes as awards to winners of the Writing competition tagged Sen. Sandy Onor Do It Yourself Challenge organized by the Special Adviser Students’ Affairs to the distinguised senator, Chief Obeten Emmanuel.

    The Senator congratulated the winners; Ewona Marywhite who came first, Victor Egba and Gabriel Ngban who came second and third respectively.

    The lawmaker charged them to become problem solvers in their respective communities, Local Government Area, central senatorial district and the State at large.

    The Distinguished Senator reiterated his commitment to the welfare of Students of Central Senatorial District with the  promise to carry out many other student related activities/empowerment programs through the office of the SA Students’ Affairs.

    Sen. Sandy Onor thanked the SA Students’ Affairs for his thoughtfulness to have engineered such a brilliant initiative and idea aimed at keeping students of Central senatorial district intellectually busy while they await the reopening of schools.

    Sen. Onor described Obeten as a brilliant and enthusiastic person.

    The presentation had in attendance, S.A Students’ Affairs to the Senator and his team comprising of Sen. Sumuko Wisdom (Judge/Curator), SUG President of Unical, Sen. Raymond Moses Derek, Comr. Anari Joyce Nelson.

    The African Student’s Union has presented an award of outstanding leadership to the Director General of the Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Janet Ekpenyong.

    Speaking on behalf of the group, the speaker of the African Student Union Parliament, Honourable Temple O, listed Dr Janet Ekpenyong as one of the youngest and most influential, hardworking administrator in the African continent who have identified with students across board offering mentorship and material supports to encourage young people chase their dreams and impact meaningfully to the African continent.

    His words “We have seen and heard about the innovative ideas you have introduced into the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Agency, we hear of your humanitarian gestures as well, we have seen you Cross Rivers and climb heels in the course of your duty and that shows uncompromising leadership quality in you, we will continue to let the world know that people like you still exist.

    “The little things you do and think they don’t count have touched the lives of people within and outside your community”

    On her part, the awardee thanked the group for finding her worthy of this year’s leadership award against all odds, she further charged them to pay better attention to their academic pursuits in order to bring greater and better changes to the African continent and develop the region.

    “I feel honored and proud to receive this leadership award and recognition from you and the group, you are a group that have shown impartiality, never compromised and well briefed about the activities of professional in all 53 African countries.

    “Every opportunity I have to serve, I do it without contemplating about it, and that is why, when I was appointed as the DG of the state Primary Healthcare Agency, I felt it’s a larger platform to touch the lives of those especially in the grassroot and that is what I have been doing, I won’t rest on it until more lives are touched.

    “I wish to encourage you all and all young people to continue to put in their best to actualize their goals in life so that we can have new breeds of African leaders who will transform our continent into a first world country based on sound and innovative thinking.

    “I’m proud that young people are now thinking out of the box by shying away from acts that can hamper their growths and development, am super proud that it’s in my lifetime that Africa and Africans are now being sort after”.

    The African Student Union Parliament is the umbrella body that covers all students within the 54 recognized African countries with core objectives of encouraging cooperation harmonious coexistence among member state’s students .

    Earlier today, September 13th, 2020, the VC elect, Prof. Florence Banku Obi visited key stakeholders in Southern Senatorial District to officially present herself to the host community of University Calabar on her emergence as the 11th VC of Unical.

    The first female VC visited the Paramount Ruler of Calabar South, Prof. Hogan Itam, who prayed for her and wished her well in her tenure which starts on December 1, 2020. Prof. Itam expressed happiness on her emergence and promised to work with her during her tenure as VC.

    The incoming VC also visited Mr Asuquo Ekpenyong Snr and Jnr respectively, where she sought their support and cooperation for a smooth running of the institution.

    Similarly, she also visited Prof. Eyo Etim-Nyong in his house. She pledged her utmost desire to run an all inclusive administration that will promote and enhance academic excellence in the univeristy.

    High point of the visit was at the residence of Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, where both amazons discussed at length and celebrated the victory of the incoming VC.

    Senator Ita-Giwa congratulated her for making history by breaking the jinx of becoming the first female VC of Unical, 45 years after.

    The Executive Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, Hon. Linus Etim lead his cabinet members and Principal officers of  Council to a meeting with the  Traditional Rulers Council in the Local Government.

    The Executive Chairman expressed gratitude to the entire members of the Council for their support, and noted that one of the important reasons he deemed the meeting necessary was to tackle the issue of insecurity in the Local Government, as well as to proffer solutions to the menace.

    Speaking further, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to build and improve the state of infrastructures in the council.

    Responding, the Paramount Ruler of Akamkpa, His Royal Highness Etchi Atui Ntufam Clement Emayip spoke on behalf of the Traditional Rulers Council, expressed  confidence in the Executive Chairman’s administration, stating that such has emanated from the good and quality projects the Chairman has embarked on within the short period of time.

    The Paramount Ruler described the Chairman as “the savior we have been waiting for.”

    HRM assured the council boss of his unflinching support and that of other Traditional Rulers across the Local Government to see to the success of the administration.

    The Chairman of Ogoja local government council, Hon. Emmmanual Ishabor has stated that he consider the security of life and properties of his citizens as a priority in his administration.

    Mr. Ishabor stated this at a meeting with all security agencies in his office at Ogoja local government council, while responding to the issues raised during the briefing.

    The Chairman used the opportunity to commend the efforts all security agencies in Ogoja to maintain law and order, and pledged his unflinching support  and synergy with all and sundry including the traditional rulers to restore peace in the local government area.

    The meeting which was attended by the State Security Adviser North, Mr Leo Ibembem, Paramount Ruler of Ogoja, His Royal Majesty Ntol George Nsor Ibembem, the Nigerian Police Force (Area command, Mopol 8, F-SARS,) the Nigerian Army (341 Artilary regiment and 130 battalion), thr Department of State Security Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Nigerian Immigration Service, State Invetigative Bureau and Fedral Road Safty Corps.

    At the meeting, security heads in the local government area took turns to decry the level of youth restiveness, drug and substance abuse, motorcycle snatching, arm robbery, cultism, kidnapping, mob killing occasioned by unlawful setting ablaze of suspected criminals and illegal/multiple checkpoints in the local government area.

    As a follow up on the reports from the Security Agencies as a form of resolution, the Executive Chairman considers the following as a working template to help curtail insecurity in the Local Government Area.

    1)  Disbandment of all illegal/multiple checkpoints in the Local Governmemt Area.

    2) Security approvals must be obtained before any political gatherings.

    3) Routine checks on hotels, drinking spot and motor parks.

    4) Proactive Security measure towards the Northern Senatorial bye-election.

    5) Clampdown on cultism, Drug abuse, arm robbery and kidnapping.

    6) Retrieving of all official number plates of the Local Government Council.

    7) Constituting of combined response team.

    The Chairman used the opportunity to call on residents of the local government area to cooperate with him to serve them better.

    Prof. Offiong E. Offiong is an astute unionist of no mean repute. He has been consistently involved in the processes that led to the midwifing of both students unions during his undergraduate programme as well as other unions in the University of Calabar where he serves. As a student activist, he championed most of the students yearnings that relived the plight of students during his undergraduate programme.

    As a member of the Academic Staff Union of University, University of Calabar Branch ASSU-UCB, he was elected Vice Chairman at age 30 and was reelect for a second term of four years following an excellent performance.

    During which time, all the unions in the University collaborated and midwived the University of Calabar International Secondary School UCISS.

    Prof. Offiong E. Offiong was elected Chairman, Academic Staff Union of University, University of Calabar Branch ASUU-UCB, in the year 2000 and was reelected in 2002 to serve another term of two years. During this period, ASUU-UCB made very positive impacts in the management of the university and in resolving all Labour related crisis.

    The distinguished Prof. Offiong E. Offiong also served as JAC Chairman, comprising of (ASUU, SSANU & NASU), University of Calabar branch. During his tenure as Chairman, he established a welfare scheme for the branch to carter for members welfare needs such as weddings, child dedication and bereavement etc.

    During this period, he introduced “computer loan scheme” which afforded members the opportunity to own their personal computers and became computer literate.

    Prof. Offiong negotiated and signed the second Centre for Educational Services CES Agreement of the university and got all the entitlements owed members including handsome allowances for Lecturers involved in Consultancy Services/Part-Time lecturing.

    As Chairman of ASSU-UCB, he was also the Zonal Coordinator, ASUU Calabar Zone, comprising of UNICAL, UNIUYO, IMSU, FUTO, UNIPORT and RSUST and as well NDU and CRUTECH where he midwived their charters into ASUU.

    Prof. Offiong E. Offiong is the first Cross Riverian to be elected National Vice-President of ASUU. At which time he organized the first leadership training workshop for Chairman and Secretary of branches in ASUU.

    Juxtaposing Prof. Offiong E. Offiong experience in the formation and service in the various unions he served previously, he very equipped with the technical, influential, managerial and developmental skills and prowess to reposition staff welfare and create job satisfaction as Vice Chancellor, University of Calabar.
