    The member representing Ogoja State Constituency and Majority Leader of the 9th Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Peter Odey has distributed 20 motorcycles to party faithfuls as part of his support for the statewide APC Aggressive Evangelism.

    Speaking during the distribution of the motorcycles at Ogoja Local Government Secretariat, Hon Peter Odey maintained that “I have decided to support the advocacy and membership drive of the Cross River State APC by providing these motorcycles to enable you go into the nooks and crannies of Ogoja. We ordered for 40 motorcycles, 20 have been delivered, others are on the way”

    Odey warned that the motorcycles were not meant for commercial cyclist purpose, urged beneficiaries to ensure that there are used for the purpose it is meant. The motorcycles were distributed to the ten ward Chairmen and one other member from each ward.

    He disclosed that women will get their own share of the support on the 24th December, 2021.

    Presenting the motorcycles to the ward Chairmen, the State Party Chairman Elect, Alphonsus Eba Esq, thanked the Chairman of Ogoja LGA, Hon Emmanuel Ishabor and congratulated the Leader of Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Peter Odinga for his benevolence and magnanimity to aid the aggressive evangelism by the APC.

    Eba maintained that “It is indeed a happy moment of for us. There is no local government area in northern senatorial district with the brand like Ogoja.
    We are here to do an evangelism. We christened our executive a ‘Digital Executive’. Our ward Chairmen needs to carry these bikes to the nooks and crannies of the state.

    “It was at this venue that we gathered and decided that senator Barr Stephen Odey should be our senator.

    “Some criminals gathered and connived with the governor of another state who has no value for money and armtwisted the Judiciary, which I am a part of, and stole our mandate through the backdoor, and this has caused us another pain of going through a bye election.

    “For us, we will not fight them. We have to go for a revenge through the ballot in the forth coming Ogoja/Yala federal constituency bye election. We will retire them. We will go into the election as a united family”

    Referring to the opposition PDP, Eba stated that “Tell them that what they are referring to as empowerment, it is APC federal government project, they are bringing it back to our people, let them not give it back to the people and claim that it is their empowerment.
    That is what they ought to do. Hon Peter Odey is taking from the much God has blessed him to come and do this for our people. It is not awarded by SDGs. This is what we call empowerment, if they don’t know the dictionary meaning of empowerment, tell them to come let me teach them the way I have been teaching them.

    “My dear people of Ogoja, we are gathered and we must be united. That is why we are in the field to show that when we are united, nobody can break us. This is the strength in unity and this is the message we have come to pass.

    “Today we have five persons at every polling unit, the money you collect constantly, #30,000.00 per month across the 196 wards, across the 3221 polling units in Cross River State runs into about one billion naira per month. That is the action of governor Ayade intellectual creativity in conjunction with local government Chairmen. Today, over 27,000 persons have been taken off the road.

    “They gave us food on the table, we are proud of the food on the table. They behave like touts, they go to eat from the scrums from the Port Harcourt table. They want to colonize us and we are saying no. It must be Cross River State first. We do not have any other leader in Cross River State other than Sen Prof Ben Ayade. You must stand behind me, we must stand with him.

    “APC is the new order, we have socketed to the center, this is the only language you want to hear. This is the party that has for the first time as a ruling party given Ogoja and Yala son a state Chairman.

    “Please and please retire them in the bye election by going to the field, vote for the candidate that will come up from this party. We will sit down as a family and take that decision. We will go to the field as a united force”

    Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Chairman, Ogoja Urban Ward 1, Mr Paul Agbeje thanked Hon Peter Odey for the initiative to aid the APC Aggressive Evangelism mantra and promised to put to good use the motorcycle for the benefit not the party.     The senator representing the good people of Cross River Central Senatorial District, Senator Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor on Saturday, November 27, 2021 visited the scene of the recent fire outbreak in Ikom Town, Ikom LGA of Cross River State. His visit was to console the victims who lost property worth millions of naira with a pledge to make relief materials available as quick as possible.

    The swift and timely reaction of the distinguished senator is in line with his inherent interventionist nature and in fulfilment of his campaign promise to always respond to the needs and yearnings of his people both in cheerful and tearful times.

    This is the second time in two years that the Ikom main market is engulfed in fire outbreak. During the first outbreak, the senator had made same on the spot visit and assessment of the level damage. He ensured a follow-up with the National Emergency Management Agency NEMA, and relief materials ranging from mattresses, zinc, bags of cement among other things were provided and distributed to the affected persons.

    Some of the victims who spoke with our reporter expressed profound gratitude to Senator Onor for his swift response, consolation and reassuring hope as the first public office holder to visit the scene inspite of distance and his very busy schedules.

    As part of the one-year anniversary of the launch of the Global Strategy on the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) is organized Town Hall Meetings in their various states to secure the buy-in, consent and readiness of stakeholders for piloting a vaccination programme for girls between the ages of 9 – 14.

    In Cross River State, Her Excellency, Dr. Linda Ayade held a Town Hall Meeting on the 29th November, 2021 at Holy Child Secondary School, Diamond Hill, Calabar with stakeholders drawn from the State Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency. Others were Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), pharmaceutical companies and other big organizations interested in carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility, traditional rulers, parents and young girls within the target age group.

    After the 3-hour Town Hall Meeting which held at the Holy Child Secondary School, Calabar, the following resolutions were reached:

    To sustain community focused efforts in improving awareness of HPV and cervical cancer in Cross River State.

    To contribute to the improvement of access to cervical cancer prevention services in the state including vaccination and referrals.

    To expand coverage and support existing interventions to reach more women and girls.

    To provide support for legal issues in women’s health including gender-based violence.

    To support community engagement activities and encourage women participation in cervical cancer prevention intervention.

    Increasing cancer awareness activities in the Mediatrix school-based clubs.

    To become active advocates against cervical cancer and HPV.

    Full Text Address By Linda Ayade To Mark First Anniversary Launch Of The Global Strategy For The Elimination Of Cervical Cancer

    AN ADDRESS MADE BY THE WIFE OF THE GOVERNOR OF CROSS RIVER STATE AND FOUNDER OF MEDIATRIX DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION, DR. LINDA AYADE, ON THE 29TH OF NOVEMBER, 2021, DURING THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE LAUNCH OF THE GLOBAL STRATEGY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF CERVICAL CANCER.

    One year ago, the Commissioner for Health and the Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency joined the Mediatrix Development Foundation team to celebrate the launch of the Global Strategy to Eliminate Cervical Cancer that was adopted and launched by the World Health Organization on the 17th of November 2020.

    The strategy, coded 90-70-90, implies that with this global strategy, the world must work to ensure 90% of girls are fully vaccinated with HPV vaccine by age 15 years; 70% of women get screened with high performance test by 35 years of age and again by 45 years of age; and 90% of women identified with cervical disease receive treatment.

    Available data shows that 19 out of 20 countries with highest burden of cervical cancer are in Africa. Therefore, implementing the global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer is of utmost importance as the burden of cervical cancer in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world. Every day, 41 women residing in Nigeria are diagnosed of cervical cancer most of which occurs at the late stage while another 29 women die each day as a result of cervical cancer complications. It is the second most frequent cancer among women between 15 – 44 years of age.

    About 3.5% of women in Nigeria are estimated to harbour cervical Human Papilloma Virus-16/18 infection at a given time, and 66.9% of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) 16 or 18. Therefore the vaccination of girls against HPV remains the single most effective approach to eliminating cervical cancer as public health issue.

    Unfortunately, due to a global shortage of the HPV vaccine causing lack of access for us in Nigeria, we must take a closer look at our progress in the effort to eliminate cervical cancer and make new commitments while re-strategizing to ensure better access to HPV vaccine, sustainable screening programmes and adequate treatment measures.

    Through my NGO, the Mediatrix Development Foundation, I will continue to work with the Cross River Ministry of Health, Primary Health Care Development Agency and other critical stakeholders who are engaged in the fight to end the menace of Cancer in Cross River State.

    I will like to thank my dear sisters, First Ladies Against Cancer, FLAC. This is our team of First Ladies of both serving and past State Governors who are waging a commendable war on all types of cancer in Nigeria. It is our earnest desire to see cervical cancer becoming part of the national discourse among policy makers and receiving appropriate funding. Only when our national programming includes cancer care will we agree that cervical cancer has received the attention it deserves.

    We must all continue to spread the message about HPV Vaccination for every girl and woman. Let us unite with survivors, advocates, communities and partners to mark 1 year of the global effort. Join, be inspired, and #glowteal to eliminate #cervical cancer in your community and beyond.

    Today, we have invited you all in order to secure your buy-in, consent and readiness for piloting a vaccination programme in Holy Child Secondary School for girls of 9 – 14 years of age.     Today, December 1, 2021, marks exactly one year since Prof. Zana Akpagu bowed out in style as Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Calabar (Unical), after serving out his illustrious and projects laden five-year single term.

     

    Prof. Akpagu made history in December 1, 2015 when he assumed office as the first alumnus Vice Chancellor of the University. Being the first “true” Unical blood to attain the exalted position of VC, much was expected of him.

     

    By the time he handed over in 2020, the University community knew that, truly, one of them had tested power. His five-year tenure was characterized with projects within and outside the University, employment opportunities for teeming youths, research breakthrough for staff, etc.

     

    He handed over a University in a very stable condition in terms of physical infrastructure, research and development, security, etc.

     

    Although a lot was said about his administration’s investment in infrastructure, one area that much wasn’t heard about was improvement of the University’s budget and internally generated revenue.

     

    Understanding the importance of finances to the development of the University, Prof. Akpagu ensured he improved the internally generated revenue of the University to over a billion naira in a year by investing in entrepreneurship and diversifying the University’s source of revenue.

     

    Like many Universities in Nigeria, Unical was majorly funded through school fee and other charges students pay. To remove the pressure from students and overcome the temptation of increasing students levies and charges to improve revenue generation, Akpagu opened other sources of revenue for the institution.

     

    For instance, he invested and expanded the Unical Water services to be producing water in commercial quantities to serve the entire Unical community and state. He also upgraded the unit to a full directorate thereby giving it the platform to function effectively.

     

    He also invested in Unical Paint and expanded the production capacity to a commercial level. Before he left office, Unical was producing paint in commercial quantity.

     

    During the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Akpagu’s administration also took advantage of the situation and ventured into Hand Santizer production. Unical Hand Sanitizer was a hot cake and orders were coming for the product within and outside the state.

     

    Similarly, Akpagu shot the University’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) budget to the third highest in the country in 2020 through his effective utilization of the funds that were previously voted to the University. Perhaps, his rating as the beat VC in utilization of TETFUND funds by visiting TETFUND officials played a huge part in achieving improved budget allocation for the University.

     

    In terms of security, his cordial relationship with students, staff and host community helped him address the issues of Kidnapping in staff quarters, cultism, theft, amongst others. He also built a standard Police Station at the University Staff quarters to help curb insecurity.

     

    To make Unical’s offering more appealing to the contemporary Labour demands, Akpagu embarked on massive programme expansion by creating new faculties and departments. Although, he was enable to get full accreditation for some of the programme, it’s still on record that he’s the first VC in Nigeria to get full accreditation for faculty of Dentistry in its very first presentation.

     

    In terms of infrastructure, as earlier stated, his name was synonymous to projects. At some points, he as nick named Mr. Projects owing to his massive investments in infrastructural development.

     

    Under his watch, Unical always had one hundred percent in Environment during accreditation. He replaced ornaments that were as old or even older than the University with more alluring ones. This explains why the institution was rated as one of the cleanest Universities in Nigeria in his time.

     

    Apart from bringing facelift to the university’s environment, during festive seasons, Akpagu made the University an alluring tourists sites by wearing it a serene ambience from the gate through the boulevard to the main campus with state-of-the-art Chrisman decorations. Fun seekers and tourists always troop in in their numbers to take pictures, make skit, etc.

     

    As human, Akpagu’s regime was not without flaws but his successes outweighed his flaws. This explains why one year after leaving office as Vice Chancellor, his name has continued to reverberate at every nook and cranny of the University.

     

    He may not be in power again but even his greatest critics can’t deny the legacies he left behind or the fact that he put Unical in the pedestal of sustainable development that’ll forever be remembered.
