Face Of International Law Student’s Association And Red Cross Ambassador Takes Menstrual Hygiene Campaign To Refugees Settlement And Bekwarra

    By Elijah Ugani – Calabar

The face of International Law Student’s Association, University Of Calabar chapter, Miss Elizabeth Idiku in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Cross River Chapter, Miss Maryann Mgbado and the Director of Socials of the University of Calabar Law Student’s Association, Miss Lenora Nwadibie Favour has embarked on a sensitization outreach and distributed sanitary pads to young girls at the Cameroonian refugees settlement at Adagom, Ogoja and Modern Primary Health Care center at Abuochiche, Bekwarra local government area of cross river state.

The sensitization was part of their reaching back to the society in line with their vision in commemoration of the 2020 world Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual event initiated by the German-Based non governmental organization, WASH United in 2014 to create awareness on the importance of good menstrual hygiene and aims to benefit women and the girl child, the world over.

Speaking on this year’s theme,  periods in pandemic, the Face of International Law Student’s Association, Miss Elizabeth Idiku admonished the young girls to rise to the challenge of the corona virus pandemic and ensure a healthy menstrual hygiene, as the periods can’t stop because of the pandemic.

Her words “Poor feminine hygiene during one’s periods can lead to vaginal irritation, urinary tract infections (UTI), and even cervical cancer.
Keeping yourself clean is key to good menstrual hygiene.

“Physical health and personal hygiene are an intrinsic part of a woman’s well-being, especially during menstruation. Although periods are a biological process, it is important to ensure personal hygiene during these days. In our everyday life, while activities such as brushing, bathing, and wearing clean clothes are a given, we tend to forget that intimate hygiene is important as well. Poor feminine hygiene during one’s periods can lead to vaginal irritation, urinary tract infections (UTI), and even cervical cancer.

The Director Of Socials, Law Student’s Association, University of Calabar, Miss Lenora Nwadibie averred that “when you are on your periods, take note of these tips:

    “Change your sanitary pad regularly
Keeping yourself clean is key to good menstrual hygiene. Make sure to change your sanitary pads every four to six hours. Using the same pad for an entire day is not only unhealthy but can also lead to irritation, infection or even UTI. You can use a good organic and biodegradable sanitary pad or menstrual cups, both of which are environmentally sustainable as well. The menstrual cup should be sterilised before every use, emptied as frequently as possible, and stored in a hygienic way after use. Go for the appropriate size of the cup as per your age, flow, and depth of the vagina.

“Wash yourself properly. Wash the vaginal area properly at least twice a day. This will help in removing all the harmful bacteria and ensure that your genitalia are clean. A natural intimate wash can be used to clean the area. Use panty liners to help absorb the excess discharge and ensure better hygiene.

On her part, the Red Cross Ambassador, Miss Maryann Mgbado, called on the young girls to “Wear clean undergarments
Wear fresh and clean undergarments everyday and change if you feel the panties are soiled from discharge. Unclean underwear can produce a bad odour during periods and put you at risk of infections. Use organic panty liners for absorbing discharges in the initial days and ensure that your undergarments are made of cotton or other soft breathable fabrics to prevent skin irritation.

Mgbado mentioned the two types of menstrual cycle to include the 28 and 30 days menstrual cycles. And held that “Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary to fallopian tube for fertilization to occur. Menstrual cycle is the regular natural change that occurs in the female reproductive system that makes pregnancy possible. The cycle is required for the production of oocyte and for the preparation of the uterus for pregnancy. The menstrual cycle occurs due to rise and fall of estrogen.

“The length of your menstrual cycle is the number of days from the first day of your bleeding to your last period to the first day of bleeding in your next. When you subtract 14 days from the end of your current cycle to determine the approximate day you ovulate. The first two days and last two days of the ovulation days are termed the window period too because fertilization can also occur at these days, reasons being that the sperm cells last 72 hours in the woman system before weary out, so there is 95 percent changes of pregnancy. Hence, abstinence begins from 2 days to the ovulation day and 2 days after the day”

Another speaker during the event, Mrs. Juan Alims held that “A key step to menstrual hygiene is to discard sanitary napkins or tampons properly.

“Dispose of sanitary pads properly. Make sure that you do not flush them as they may clog the sewage pipes and drains. Always wrap them properly and throw them in the designated bin to avoid the spread of harmful bacteria. Do not forget to clean your hands after you dispose of it. Wash your hands well with a liquid soap before and after changing sanitary pads. Make sure that your hands are clean when touching or washing your genital area. If you are travelling, or on the go, carry a good hand sanitiser to clean your hands”

Miss Peace Onyi advised the young girls to “consume balanced and nutritious diets, especially during your periods, is of utmost importance. Keep yourself well hydrated by drinking at least four to six litres of water. This will ensure there is no bloating sensation and help you feel at ease.

“Menstrual hygiene must be made an intrinsic part of your monthly cycle. In case there is any strong abnormal smell or change in flow or colour of discharge or menstrual flow, make sure to contact a specialist immediately”

The team also distributed sanitary pads to the young girls.

On his part, the Clan Head of Itekpa -Abouchiche, HRH Chief Clement Obogor, commended the inspiration of the organizers of the sensitization especially at this global challenging period, and advised the organizers to keep the fire burning as the sky is their starting point.

  • Odinkalu Declines Interview With National Daily Over Journalist, Agba Jalingo’s Incarceration

Odinkalu Declines Interview With National Daily Over Journalist, Agba Jalingo’s Incarceration

    By Admin

Human rights activist, and immediate past Chair of the National Human Rights Commission NHRC, Professor Chidi Odinkalu has said he declined an interview with a national daily in Nigeria following the paper’s decision to award a sitting Governor who allegedly orchestrated the arrest and incarceration of journalist, Agba Jalingo.

Odinkalu, who is currently the senior team manager for the Africa Program of Open Society Justice Initiative, in a brief chat said that people have to be held accountable for their actions as it relates to the Nigerian civic space which reports show is shrinking.

Nigeria currently ranks 115 out of 180 countries on World Press Freedom Index as compiled by Reporters without Borders (Reporters sans frontières). The last report issued in April 2020 cited the killing, detention and brutalisation of journalists as well as deliberate attempts to shrink the civic space by the Nigerian Government as reasons for the ranking.

And, Odinkalu, while explaining the reason why he turned down an interview with Daily Independent earlier in the week, said; “We are not stupid people. We have to hold everyone to account.”

A top level editor of the paper had reached him to comment on the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic. But, Odinkalu in his reply said: “I’d wish to respond but I am not sure I can.”

According to Odinkalu, the daily’s editor “went to Calabar to give an award to Ben Ayade while he was detaining Agba Jalingo. I personally decided I would have nothing to do with Independent for at least 1 year.”

    Who is Agba Jalingo?

Jalingo is the publisher of CrossRiverWatch, an online newspaper based in Nigeria’s southern port city of Calabar. He was arrested in his Lagos residence on August 22nd 2019, about a month after he published an article wherein he demanded that the Cross River state government comes clean on the whereabouts of the NGN500 million it approved and released for the floating of the Cross River Microfinance bank.

He was then driven to Calabar by road in a journey that lasted about 26 hours. He arrived on August 24th and was detained at a Police black site for 34 more days before he was arraigned on September 25th before Justice Simon Amobeda of the Calabar division of the Federal High Court. He was remanded at a medium security custodial center in Calabar.

Justice Amobeda denied admitting him to bail twice and following a leaked tape of him allegedly threatening that Jalingo will be meted the ‘Dele Giwa’ treatment, the defense team wrote the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for reassignment of the case; the judge later recused himself.

Now, Cross River Governor, Benedict Ayade was fingered as the architect of his travails, an allegation the state has continuously denied and accused Time Newspapers of practicing “Gutter Journalism” after it published the November 2019 list of the #OneFreePressCoalition “10 Most Urgent Cases Of Threat To Press Freedom In The World,” wherein Jalingo was listed number 9.

    The award…

On January 13, 2020, a news story emanating from the office of Mr. Ayade’s spokesman, Christian Ita said the Governor has “bagged the Independent Newspaper Governor of the Year award for 2019.”

The story quoted the newspaper as saying that; “by his sterling performance so far in office, amidst paucity of funds, Governor Ayade has effectively distinguished himself as one of the most outstanding governors since the advent of the current democratic dispensation since 1999, and also a pathfinder of good governance in Nigeria.”

As at this time, Jalingo’s fate remained unknown until February 13, 2020 when he was eventually admitted to bail by a different judge, Justice Sule Shuaibu. He will spend four more days before he was eventually released on February 17, 2020; same day, the Managing Director and Editor- In-Chief of Independent Newspaper, Mr. Steve Omanufeme visited Calabar and presented the award letter to Governor Ayade as the Daily Independent Newspaper Governor-of-the-Year.

C’River State Local Government Election And My Dilemma – YPP Chairman

    By Elijah Ugani – Calabar

The Chairman of the Young Progressive Party YPP, Cross River State chapter, Comr. Anthony Bisong has stated that he is in a state of dilemma in view of the Cross River State local government election slated for 30th May, 2020.

In a release made available to THE LUMINE NEWS, and signed by himself indicates that he desire has been to have a functional local government system to boost grass root representation.

Full text of the release “In the past 48 hours, I’ve been inundated with calls from different quarters to state my position on the newly published time table for the long awaited Local Government Election. I’ve maintained a studied silence until now due to the complex nature of the issues on ground.

“Recall that my party, the Young Progressives Party, YPP has had the most rancorous and turbulent outings against the CROSIEC Chairman, Dr. Mike Ushie as a result of what we considered as inconsistencies in the process of filing candidates. Our reservation in that case has not changed. Moreover, we also express our reservation about the cacophony that has followed the new date for the election.

“It is also important to recall that on the 18th of July last year, I led a protest under the aegis of Coalition of CRS Civil Society Organizations to demand for the conduct of Local Government Election in the State. My desire has been to have a functional Local Government system to boost grassroots representation. I didn’t protest because I wanted to contest the election myself, neither did I protest because I felt my party must win election at all cost. My agitation for grassroots representation has been very altruistic.

“For the first time in a long time I’ve found myself in a serious dilemma. I’m clearly standing between the devil and the deep blue sea. However, as an advocate of grassroots administration, it’s contradictory to boycott an election that will usher in legitimate functionaries for the Local Government. This is even more important given the preponderance of condemnation that greeted the approval of about #5.4 billion naira by the CRS House of Assembly, a responsibility that is exclusively meant for the Local Government Executives.

“General speaking, I hold a firm opinion that it would be easier to demand for accountability from elected Representatives. Every political party seeks to win elections but we also have the duty of demanding for accountability from those in power. Therefore, whoever wins in the forthcoming election will definitely come under our scrutiny as we’ll monitor the day to day running of our Local Government Councils.

“On the strength of the aforesaid, I here state categorically that Young Progressives Party, YPP, Cross River State Chapter support the conduct of Local Government Election in Cross River State come 30th May, 2020. Let it also be on record that we are not in coalition with any party contesting the coming election. Our decision is solely in the interest of Cross River State. Having waited for elections for over four years, we feel compelled to support the new date so that our State can join the league of States with functional grassroots Representatives which we believe would help alleviate our local economy as well as support the fight against COVID 19 at the grassroots.

“The major concern of our great party is the forthcoming Bye election in Cross River Northern Senatorial District. We are hopeful that the good people of CR North having learnt their lessons in the past will support us to elect a Senator they can call their own. All our energies and resources are therefore going to be channeled towards winning CR Northern Senatorial District Bye-Election”

Breaking: Court Sentences RCCG Pastor To Death By Hanging

    PM News

A youth pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Akolade Arowolo, has been sentenced to die by hanging for the murder of his banker wife, Titilayo.

Pastor Arowolo could not hold back his pains after the court ruling, he burst into a fit of prayer. Titilayo worked with Skye bank, whilst her husband was employed. Prosecutors were able to present compelling evidence that led to the conviction of Mr Arowolo and his sentencing by Justice Lateefat Okunu of the Ikeja High Court, he was handed a death sentence. Justice Okunu held in her over three hours judgment that evidence before the court proved that Arowolo actually murdered his wife in their matrimonial home.

Testimony in the form of a forensic report from Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, a pathologist, was what the court used to determine that there was no way the deceased could have stabbed herself to death. Immediately after the judgment, Arowolo fell down in the dock and started shouting “Jesus have mercy.” PM News reports that Prof Obafunwa testified that his autopsy report revealed that Titilayo was killed through 76 knife stab wounds.

There were claims by Pastor Arowolo, suggesting that his wife was possessed and inflicted injuries on herself. He noted that the knife wounds affected Titilayo’s left eye, right eye, upper chest area, right chest and collar bone. Prof. Obafunwa pointed out in his testimony that the deceased could not have inflicted such wounds on herself. To further prove its case, prosecution invited some of Titilayo’s family members who testified that Arowolo and Titilayo had always had a troubled marriage.

The family members included Titilayo’s father, George Oyakhire; sister, Ijeh and mother-in-law, Mrs Adetoun Yeside Oyakhire. The three witnesses testified that the couple lived a cat and mouse life. They claimed that the family had at several times, settled serious fights between the couple. None of the witnesses however saw what actually happened on the day Titilayo died

Arowolo’s co-tenant, Adewale Adeyemi also gave evidence in the case. Arowolo’s parents testified that their son was incapable of murder.

Citizens Solution Network Calls On Government To Wade Into The OKu Killings In Boki LGA Of CRS

    By Elijah Ugani – Calabar

Citizens Solution Network, a non governmental organization has called on the government of Cross River State and the Nigerian Police to ensure that the perpetrators of the killings in Oku community in Boki local government area on the frivolous allegations of witches and wizards should be prosecuted in line with the necessary laws to avert further reoccurrence.

In a release signed by the Country Director of Citizens Solution Network, Comr. Richard Ifono and made available to THE LUMINE NEWS, indicates that other elderly citizens are still living in fears and coma that they may also be attacked.

Full text of the release “A very disturbing information has got to us here at Citizens’ Solution Network’s Office, Calabar Secretariat that several women have been burnt to death in Oku Community in Boki Local Government Area in Cross River State on the unacceptable allegation that these women_ our elderly citizens, mothers and sisters are witches and wizards. Also Chief Bernard Kekong was among the number of persons that were killed by the arsonists that carried out these reprehensible killings.

As we speak John Otu and Edward Kekong have sustained severe injuries, and are struggling to survive as a result of these killings targeted at them and others that were accused of witchcraft.

Also information reaching us here shows that many elderly citizens are scared of being attacked and are on the run for their lives over such useless and senseless accusation of being tagged witches.

Let it be in public registry that we condemn in the strongest terms the killings of Chief Kekong Bernard and several women that were burnt to death in Oku Community in Boki, Cross River State on the outrageous claims that they were witches and wizards.

We call on the Nigerian Police Force to speed into action to safeguard Oku Community to prevent more senseless killings of our elderly citizens, and to ensure that all those who are responsible for these heinous crimes of murder are brought to justice.

This is a terrible precedence that must not be allowed to stand. The idea that a miscreant would accused a fellow citizen of witchcraft and get such human burnt to death should be strongly rejected and condemned unanimously by all. All extra judicial killings must be investigated and the perpetrated prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to discourage such killings in future.

The Nigerian Police Force and the Ayade-led Government must ensure that all those responsible are arrested, prosecuted and given the heaviest of sentences for these multiple homicides. No level of excuses from the Oku killing gang should be accepted.
