    UNICAL Suspends GSS Examinations, Announces New Date…Rues The Unintended Ugly Consequence

    University of Calabar management has formally announced the suspension of the General Studies Examination which led to a stampede of 21 students on Saturday November 11th 2023.

    In a release made available to TheLuminenews, and signed by the institution Registrar, Mr Gabriel Egbe, indicates that the examination has now been rescheduled for December 10th and 11th 2023.

    The release reads in full; “The management of the University of Calabar has formally announced the suspension of the General Studies Examination (GSS), following the stampede that occurred on Saturday 11th November, 2023 at the venue of the examination.

    “The announcement which was conveyed in a release issued by the Registrar of the University of Calabar, Mr Gabriel Egbe, also disclosed that the GSS examinations has now been rescheduled for December 11 and 12, 2023 for all students that could not write the examination.

    “The Registrar in the release said the avoidable stampede resulted in some injuries, however, the affected students were given immediate treatment at the University Medical Centre and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital respectively.

    “While Management of the University is still investigating the incident, it is however happy to report from its visits to the 21 injured students (14 in UCTH, 7 in Unical Med Centre) in both health facilities, that no life was lost and that virtually all of them have been discharged.

    “The Management of the institution regrets the ugly incident and wants to assure parents of the safety of their children under the custody of the University and also reassure our “esteemed and Valuable” students of its relentless drive to ensure and achieve academic excellence”.

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has exposed the destructive works of rumour mongers and mischief makers on Campus.

    In her birthday message to the University Registrar, Amb. Gabriel Egbe, the Vice Chancellor dismissed the trending social media news on the rift between her and the Registrar as the handiwork of idle minds who have little or nothing to offer the university. She recalled the long cordial working relationship that has existed between her and Amb. Egbe, dating back to 2011 when, as Chairman of the University Housing Loan Implementation Committee, she was lucky to have Gabriel Egbe as her Secretary, and where, together, they recorded a phenomenal and unprecedented achievements in that Committee. She equally recalled that, at some time in her career when she suffered persecution in the system, and when everyone seemed to avoid her, Mr. Gabriel Egbe stood by her and never turned her down in any way.

    Prof FBO said she was happy and considered it the “hand of God” having to work with Mr. Egbe again as Registrar and Secretary to Council. She said “I have a perfect working relationship with Mr. Egbe … I laugh at everybody who tells stories that the VC wants to remove Gabriel Egbe”. She described the birthday celebrant as humble, respectful, hardworking, loyal and responsive.

    In her remarks, the Pro-Chanceĺor, Dist. Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu, CON, also paid glowing tribute to the Registrar, describing him as a hardworking, quiet and unassuming person who was a member of Council, representing Congregation from 2017 when she assumed duty as Chairman of the 12th Governing Council of the University before his appointment as Registrar. They both wished Mr Egbe well, and urged him to maintain the good work that has continue to stand him out.

    The management of the University of Calabar has stated that hostel accommodation will be open to students on the 12th of February 2021one week from 5th February, 2021 the official resumption date.

    In a release made available to The Lumine News and signed by the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe indicates that it is to give room for the completion of the renovation of the vandalized hostels.

    The release reads in full, “This is to inform our students that the University of Calabar will be resuming for normal academic activities tomorrow Friday 5th February, 2021. However, hostel accommodation will not be open to students until Wednesday 12th February 2021. This is to give room for the completion of the renovation of vandalized hostels. Returning students, especially those who were earlier allocated bed spaces in the hostels are please advised to seek temporary accommodation outside the campus until 12th February, 2021.

    “Students are advised to take note of this new development. Be informed also, that the university policy of “no squatting in the hostel” is still in force. All Students must adhere to all Covid-19 precautionary measures put in place by management.

    “On behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, I wish all our returning students a safe and peaceful academic session”.

    University Of Calabar Advertises For The Position Of Vice Chancellor

    The Governing Council of the University of Calabar has declared vacant the position of the Vice Chancellor in the University with effect from 1st December, 2020.

    The declaration followed the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu whose tenure in office is to elapsed on the 30th of November, 2020.

    Prof. Zana Akpagu is the 10th Vice Chancellor of the institution and the first alumunus to head the institution.

    A release sighted by theluminenews and signed by the Registrar of the institution, Amb. Gabriel O. Egbe indicates that interested academics shall submit 30 copies of their applications with detailed curriculum vitae, duly signed and dated by the candidates with the most recent passports size photograph attached to each.

    The release reads in part “The Governing Council of the University of Calabar has declared a vacancy for the position of Vice Chancellor in the University with effect from 1st December 2020.

    “In accordance with the provisions of the university (miscellaneous) Decree No 11 of 1993 (as amended), the council has commenced the process of filling the vacancy.

    “The University of Calabar came into being on the strength of Decree No 93 of 1979, starting academic work in 1975, the university has the object of encouraging the advancement of learning and holding out to all persons without distinction to race, creed, sex, political or religious affiliation.

    “The candidates for the post of Vice Chancellor is expected to; 1. be an acclaimed scholar who is a professor of very high repute and must have published in academic journals that are both national and international reputes. 2. Wide range of academic experience. 3. be on the rank of professor for at least 9 years by 1st Dec, 2020. 4. must not be more than 63 years of age by 1st Dec, 2020”

    The release also indicated that the successful candidate is hold office for a period of 5 years.
