  • Sandy Onor: A Development Czar By ORI OWAN

     

    It was Chinua Achebe, legendary Nigerian novelist and essayist who said that, “Until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.”
    Driving home the wisdom in this statement is a popular saying which admonishes us to “give honour to whom it is due and celebrate something good even in the thick of gloom and doom that has saturated our media space.”

    Indeed, it is the case of “action speaks louder than words” when it concerns Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor’s redemptive projects and activities in the Central Cross River Senatorial District. Senator Onor has distinguished himself as a man of great capacity and enterprise. His giant strides in the last two years remain both unmatched and challenging. His dedicated service to the people of Cross River Central has brought another giant amongst the best senators in Nigeria to the limelight. In fact, several appellations have been given consciously to this uncommon performer, especially by the people at the grassroots. Some have justifiably christened him a “repository of projects”, while others in their characteristic manner have argued strenuously, extensively and passionately that Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor is another emerging “Mr projects” south of the Niger. If one were to filter facts from fictions, one could loosely describe him as a harbinger of infrastructure. If one were to be pedantic and petty as his adversaries and traducers, then Senator Sandy Onor could be seen and measured in light of his numerous empowerments and poverty alleviation programs in the past two years. No doubt, if it were a contest, he would have walked away with the trophy long ago. If it were a class of degree, he would have meritoriously walked away with a first class honours. Of course, he would have been the valedictorian. If it were the “MO” Ibrahim award of excellence, exclusively reserved for outstanding leaders in Africa, Senator Sandy Onor would have sailed through. Unfortunately, Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor found himself in a political climate and setting where excellence in leadership is not celebrated. A setting that does not appreciate leaders who provide roads, electricity and water; a setting that does not appreciate leaders who transform dreams into reality. Rather, it is a polity that admires leaders who temporarily doll out cash rewards to the masses in exchange for praises, even when the roads are dilapidated; even when there is no portable water to drink; even when there are no good rural roads and other infrastructure.

    Before his celebrated emergence in 2019, people taught that politics was a class-driven exercise. The notion at that material time was that representatives were exclusively restricted to Abuja and state capitals. Legislators were seen as demigods, as constituents were subjected to rigorous procedures before they can interface with their legislators. But today, with Senator Sandy Onor, times have really changed. Thus, constituency allowances no longer end in private pockets and fat bank accounts. The facts are obvious and glaring that he gives back to the constituents more than he gets at the National Assembly. He ensures that whatever he dolls out, touches the man at the grassroots, which is why he visits his district on weekly basis for evaluations and town hall meetings.

    The Covid 19 pandemic that swept across the shores of nations is also an exemplar of effective and excellent representation. This is because the pandemic appeared like a destabilizing wind. Yet, this people-oriented Senator, captain and tireless champion of the common people did not disappoint his constituents. He gave them soft landing without allowing them to drown in the torrential ocean of Covid of 19. As such,he embarkd on a vigorous tour across the L.G.As of the Central District to feel the pulse of his people. Though, anonymous and quiet in his natural style, Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor gave Cash donations and unquantifiable food items, especially to the vulnerable segments of the society. Beyond this, over one hundred persons, selected from across the LGAs in the Senatorial District were handsomely empowered during his massive empowerment program that took place in the first quarter of 2021. In addition to this gesture, small and medium scale businesses were given a boost as a result of this empowerment program. Recently, many training centres were agog across the entire district, with influx of participants being taught several skills and eventually empowered to start up businesses. More so, the principal, parents/guidance of students of several secondary schools in Abi L.G.A and many other communities in the Central Cross River State, remain appreciative to Senator Sandy Onor’s footprints in their schools in terms of renovations and supply of modern equipment and furniture.

    It is pertinent to remark, as the foregoing demonstrate, that Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor has dedicated his time and energy to make his constituents more secure and safe. He has deployed all government services to create fair and equal opportunity for constituents to make a living through his sustained leadership and love of humanity. A man who has made it possible even in the face of impossibles. A member of the ninth Assembly, which is characterized by serious austerity and absence of resources, yet this performer even in this situation hasn’t disappointed his constituents and followers. Even his worst critics would acknowledge this glaring facts. In fact, those who criticize him, in the respectful opinion of this writer, should embark on a tour of the rural roads in the entire district and sample the opinions of the rural dwellers.The leaders who talk against him, do so because Senator Sandy Onor has taken the unfamiliar path in putting smiles on the faces of his people. No Senator has done what Senator Sandy Onor has done in the past two years of his tenure. It is only a fantasized dreamer that will expect overnight miracles from this Senator whose expeditions have been recorded in the minds of the people. Thus, an average Cross Riverian regard him as an experienced elder statesman due to his moral principles. Hence, if he bows out as a Senator in 2023 to take up higher responsibilities, he will be remembered by all and sundry through his footprints, which is indeed the measure of a man. No wonder he is currently seen as a development Czar. History will certainly be fair to Distinguished Senator Sandy Irunandu Ojang Onor.

  • C’River PDP Describes The Invasion Of Its Secretariat By The APC As A Tragedy Of Lawlessness

    The Cross River State chapter of the People Democratic Party PDP has described the invasion of its secretariat by the ruling All Progressive Congress APC as a tragedy of lawlessness.

    In a release made available to The Lumine News and signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Mike Ojisi calls on the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, Calabar and  heads of all Security Agencies in Cross River State to expeditiously intervene and help restore the rule of law in the face of this brazen and evasive rape of the law by the APC.

    The release reads in full:

    “APC’s Invasion Of Our Party Secretariat: Tragedy of Lawlessness.

    “On Wednesday, 10th November 2021, the peace-loving People of Cross River State were once again greeted by another reckless act of lawlessness orchestrated by the unproductive All Progressive Congress in Cross River State.

    “The Peoples Democratic Party Cross River State received with grave concern the news of the unlawful invasion of our Party’s Secretariat at Murtala Mohammed Highway Calabar, by the yet-to-be inaugurated handpicked State Working Committee of the APC led by the factional Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba. To this end, it has become absolutely imperative and instructive that we address this issue and make it clear that the lawless APC lacks the locus standi to invade the said party Secretariat which is still under contention. It’s also worthy of note to stress that, following the instructions of the AIG Zone 6 for both parties to stall administrative duties in the Secretariat until investigation into the matter is properly concluded, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party was shocked to witness the forceful invasion of the Secretariat which has been under lock and key.

    “As law-abiding citizens, we hereby, without any form of equivocation call on the AIG Zone 6, Commissioner of Police, Civil Defence and heads of all Security Agencies in Cross River State to expeditiously intervene and help restore the rule of law in the face of this brazen and evasive rape of the law by the APC. We hereby demand an explanation into this unlawful invasion of our Secretariat by the overzealous SWC of the APC.

    “As a party, we are very much aware of the APC’s incurable craze and penchant for lawlessness both at the National and State Level, an obvious tragedy all rational Cross Riverian nay Nigerian, must speak against. We call on the APC to respect the rule of law and redeem her image in the eyes of the people, at least for once.

    “As a party with the inalienable right to freedom of association as enshrined in our nation’s constitution, we shall continue to resist any attempt by the APC to gag, victimize or subjugate members of our great party.

    “We also call on our teeming supporters and members of our great party to remain calm and law-abiding as we explore all legal and legitimate means towards reclaiming our party Secretariat”

  • What You Need To Know About The Newly Elected PDP National Women Leader, Prof Stella Ajah Effah-Attoe BY DAVE IMBUA

     

    When I arrived in the Bendi Technical College as a timid village boy to begin my secondary school education over three decades ago, the first event of lasting memory that occurred was the visit to that village school of the then Cross River State Commissioner for Education, whom we welcomed with a number of social activities that had been rehearsed with anxiety for several weeks. I still recall vividly our excitement when a very young lady, in fact the youngest person among the august visitors, was introduced and presented to us as the Honourable Commissioner for Education. I had no inkling on that day that I was being introduced to a woman who would years after be one of my favourite lecturers in the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Calabar, a woman who would later be my colleague, a woman who thirty-three years after, on the 30th day of October, 2021 will be elected unopposed as the National Women Leader of Nigeria’s darling political party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party. If for nothing else, my intimate knowledge of Prof. Stella Ajah Effah-Attoe’s intellectual sagacity and moral capital places me in a vantage position to say a few things about her that may be useful to people that have not followed her growth and maturation as a scholar and public intellectual over the years.

    Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe, distinguished Nigerian public intellectual, courageous and visionary politician, lover of her country and by the grace of God Almighty, the first Cross Riverian and first Professor to be elected as National Women Leader of a formidable Nigerian political party, was born in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State several decades ago. She had her primary education in three different primary schools, beginning at Saint Louise Nursery School, Bompai, Kano; Our Lady Girls’ School, Tiko, Cameroon and our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Lagos where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate with Distinction in 1971. She did her secondary school studies at Edgerley Memorial Girls’ Secondary School, Calabar, from 1972 to 1976, where she graduated with Division 1 in the West African School Certificate Examination. In 1976, she proceeded to the University of Calabar where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Second Class Honours, Upper Division, in History in 1980. She did her graduate studies in the University of Calabar from 1981 to 1985, obtaining a doctorate degree in African History at the age of 26.

    Professor Stella Effah-Attoe began her work experience as a lecturer at the then Cross River State School of Basic Studies, Akamkpa (now Cross River College of Education, Akamkpa in 1981). She left the job in February 1986 to take up appointment as Lecturer II in the History Department of the University of Calabar, where she has taught for the last 35 years. Prof Stella Effah-Attoe grew through the ranks and was promoted Professor in 2010.

    As a University lecturer, Professor Stella Effah-Attoe has taught virtually all courses offered in the Department of History and International Studies at the University of Calabar to several generations of students, some of whom are now established scholars and professionals in their own right. In her eventful career as an academic, she has supervised over a hundred Undergraduate Long Essays, 25 M.A. theses and 15 Ph.D. dissertations. Apart from this, she had at various times served as Graduate School Representative in the defense of Ph.D. and Masters Theses in other departments in the University of Calabar. She had also served as External Examiner to the University of Uyo and Benue State University for their M.A./Ph.D. programmes. She has also assessed candidates for promotion to the ranks of Associate Professor and Professor for several Nigerian universities.

    Apart from teaching, research and supervision, Professor Stella Effah-Attoe has served the University of Calabar at several other capacities including Chairperson, Department of History Graduate Committee (1995 – 1997); Member, Faculty of Arts Examination Malpractice Committee (1996 – 1997); Member, Graduate School and Staff Development Sub-committee of the Strategic Planning Committee (1995 – 1997); Member of Senate, University of Calabar (2002 – 2003; 2010 to 2021); Member, Curriculum Committee, Faculty of Arts (1998 – 2000); Head, Department of History and International Studies (2002 – 2003); Member, University of Calabar Contact Committee (2005 – 2010); Chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Department of History and International Studies’ Conferences (2016 – 2020), member, Faculty of Arts Investment Committee and the Intellectual Property Policy Committee (IPPC) of the University, Dean of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Calabar, a position she left to champion the mobilization of Nigerian women for political participation and national development.

    In addition to her academic career at the University of Calabar, she has served her state, Cross River, and country, Nigeria meritoriously in many positions. She had served as a member of the Cross River State Executive Council in the capacity of Commissioner for Education and later Commissioner for Information and Culture from October 1987 to June 1990. In 1997, Professor Effah-Attoe contested and won elections into the Cross River State House of Assembly representing Biase constituency. Unfortunately, the election was annulled following the death of General Sani Abacha. She was a highly resourceful member of the Committee on Restructuring and Reforms of the Local Government system in Cross River State, which was inaugurated by His Excellency, Governor Donald Duke on July 4, 2003. At the national level, she was member, Governing Council of the National Health Insurance Scheme (2000 – 2003); Member, Board of Directors, Federal Housing Authority Board (2005 – 2006); Chairman, Board of Directors of the Voice of Nigeria (2009 – 2010); Member, Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (2013 – 2015), Member, National Population Census Monitoring Team (1991). She had previously served in 1989 as member of the Committee for the Implementation of the nine years Compulsory Education Programme for Nigeria. The recommendations of this Committee are now being implemented in the New National Policy on Education in Nigeria, whereby a child has to go through nine years of Compulsory Schooling, starting from Primary one to six (six years), and from Junior Secondary School – one to three (three years). Her outstanding resourcefulness explains why she has been called to serve the nation in these and many other critical areas.

    Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe is an acclaimed, respected and often quoted humanistic scholar especially in African History and Gender Studies. Author of several books and book chapters, journal articles in local and international journals and conference papers, she has been at the cutting edge of scholarship. Some of the books she has authored are: A Federation of the Biase People: Origin and Development of Biase Ethnicity, 1750 – 1950 (1990); Margaret Ekpo: Lioness in Nigerian Politics, (co-authored with S. O. Jaja) (1993); Women Empowerment and Nation Building in Nigeria (2004); Nigerian and African History (co-authored with O. T. Abia) (2001). She co-edited Okon Uya at 70: Issues in Historiography, Nation Building and the African Diaspora (2016) with David Imbua, C. B. N. Ogbogbo and Yakubu Ochefu. She was the 79th inaugural lecturer of the University of Calabar. Her very insightful lecture on “Gender Mainstreamism in Nigeria’s Political Development: From Hindsight to Foresight” which was well researched, ably written and masterly delivered has remained a reference material on gender studies in Nigeria.

    A widely traveled scholar, prof. Stella Effah-Attoe has attended conferences and other engagements in almost all the states of Nigeria and in many other cities outside the country, including several countries in Africa (Cameroon, South Africa, Uganda, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco, etc.), Europe (United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, etc.), Asia (Hong Kong, Japan, etc.), the Middle East (Israel, United Arab Emirate, Qatar, etc.) and North America (United States of America, Canada, etc). Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe has all along committed her outstanding intellect, courage, industry and altruistic disposition to the welfare and wellbeing of humanity, especially women, children and youths. Among her other numerous activities in this regard are the following: the mobilization of women to exercise their voting rights during elections, empowerment of women and youths through grants for business start-ups, enhancement of the girl-child education through scholarships and educational grants in Biase, provision of mentorship and counselling sessions for women and youths, provision of mentorship, guidance and counselling to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the University of Calabar, etc. Specific mention should be made of the role of her NGO – Center for Gender Empowerment, in the sensitization and mobilization of women in Cross River State in particular and Nigeria in general for nation building and development.

    Professor Stella Effah-Attoe is a woman highly recognized and decorated for her scholarship and achievements in various spheres of life. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Administrative Management of Nigeria (FIAMN), Qualified and Incorporated Administrative Manager (QIAM), 21st Century Trust Fellow, London, Senator of the United Nations International Parliament for Peace and Safety, Woman of Excellence Award, Woman Achiever Award, a recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Cross River State Chapter, Public Service Award in recognition of impactful contribution to public service, academics and inspiration to NAWOJ, NYSC’s Award of Honour in recognition of outstanding and inestimable contributions to humanity, to mention but a few.

    What can anyone say in a synopsis that will capture the phenomenal life of Professor Stella Effah-Attoe? By every consideration, Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe is a heroine, a legend and a core humanist, who has blessed the fortunes of a great company of men and women in several communities, institutions and organizations. Because of my intimate knowledge of her life and times, there is no doubt in my mind that the PDP has brought onboard a woman of great capacity and foresight that will reposition Nigerian women as critical agents of nation building and development. I am optimistic that she will convert her rich knowledge of the enormous contributions that women actors have made to the processes, actions and movements that have enhanced the building of the Nigerian state since the pre-colonial era into doses of inspiration and challenge for Nigerian women in confronting the challenges of the 21st century.

  • PDP Condemns The Manhandling Of Road Sweepers In Calabar

    The People’s Democratic Party PDP has condemned in strong terms the inhuman mated on protesting roadside sweepers who have been owed a paltry sum of #7,500.00 for six months in Calabar.

    The PDP in a release signed by its Publicity Secretary, Prince Mike Ojisi and sighted by TheLumineNews, admonishes them to remain calm and law abiding for there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

    The release reads in full “The Peoples Democratic Party Cross River State Condemn in totality the inhumane, barbaric and demonic treatment meted out on our aged mothers by some overzealous Police Officers trying to ingratiate some unscrupulous elements in Power. We call on the governor and the Commissioner of Police to expeditiously launch investigation into this flagrant act of human right abuse, as the right to protest is a fundamental human rights especially amongst workers protesting for their Salary.

    “More so, we enjoin the state government to further investigate the nonpayment of Salary to these environmental workers as they are our unsung heroes that have continued to work assiduously in keeping our city clean and green.

    “We sympathize with all those manhandled by the Police during the protest for their rights, while admonishing them to remain calm and law abiding for there will be light at the end of the tunnel”

  • C’River PDP Chair, Vena Ikem Approves The Appointment Of Personal Aides

    The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Vena Ikem Esq, has approved the appointment of four personal aides.

    In release made available to TheLumineNews and signed by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Prince Mike Ojisi, indicates that the appointment takes immediate effect, while a due date for formal inauguration in line with section 05 of the party constitution will be communicated.

    The release reads in parts “The Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Cross River State Chapter, Hon Barr Vena Ikem, after due consultation with relevant stakeholders has approved the appointment of the under listed personal staff.

    “Hon. Tony Effiong, Chief of Staff, Effiong Jonah Eyet, S A, Southern Senatorial District (Odukpani),
    Mr. Ayang David Ayang, S A, Central Senatorial District (Etung), Mr Gospel Agom, S A, Northern Senatorial District (Ogoja) while Mr David Ukeh to serve as Personal Assistant to the Chairman.

    “The Chairman on behalf of the party congratulates the above appointees and urge to discharge their duties with utmost sense of responsibility.

    “Until their appointment, Hon Tony Effiong was State Financial Secretary APP, and later served as Secretary of Council, Akampka Local Government Area.
    Mr Ayang David Ayang, former Management Committee Member, Oban Palm Estate, 2002-2004, Chief Protocol to Etung Local Government Area, 2007-2010.
    Mr Gospel Agom had earlier served as Chief Protocol Officer to Chairman, Ogoja Local Government Area.

  • Converting Our Secretariat To APC Is Illegal, Immature Politicking – PDP

    STATEMENT ISSUED AT THE WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE HELD BY THE PDP CARETAKER COMMITTEE, CROSS RIVER STATE, IN REACTION TO EVENTS FOLLOWING THE DEFECTION OF GOVERNOR BEN AYADE TO THE APC

    1. On Thursday, the 20th of May, 2021, Senator Ben Ayade, Governor of Cross River State elected on the platform of our party the PDP, defected to the APC. His defection was unprovoked. The reason given by the governor for his action being his admiration for the way President Buhari is running the affairs of the country with absolute integrity. It is Buhari’s sterling management of the Nigerian economy and the affairs of the country in general, especially the handling of herdsmen farmers crisis, that so impressed Governor Ben Ayade that he feels drawn to support the President by decamping to the APC.

    2. Members of the PDP in Cross River State, even nationally, are not in the least surprised by Governor Ayade’s decision to decamp; he openly admitted that he has been sitting on the fence and dancing. We are relieved that the Governor has finally, we hope, come down from the fence on the side of the APC. This will allow our party some space to regenerate the internal peace and cohesion that existed in the Cross River PDP family before Governor Ayade happened upon us. We respect Governor Ayade’s choice and wish him and the APC peace and equanimity.

    3. On 22nd May, 2021, two days after defecting from our party, Governor Ayade, now a full-fledged APC member, invaded the state secretariat of PDP at 42A Murtala Mohamed Highway, Calabar, with thugs under the cover of armed men of the Nigerian Police force, Cross River Command. Governor Ayade forcefully took over the secretariat and on his instructions the building has now been repainted in the colours of the APC. We understand that the building now serves as one of the several state secretariats of the APC in Calabar. The building currently stands, under guard by the police, painted in APC colours, flying the APC flags, as monumental signpost of impunity, political rascality and absolute disregard for law and order.

    4. We had earlier raised alarm that vital documents, sensitive party membership registers and other facilities are being carted away or destroyed. That situation has not abated.

    5. This building has served as the state secretariat of PDP for over 22 years; it was the secretariat of the PDP even before Governor Ayade joined PDP. The current rent for the property has been paid and the tenancy of PDP subsists. The rent receipts issued to our party, in the name of PDP, are available in proof. The Lessor who rented the property to the PDP, has issued a statement to the effect that PDP is the lawful tenant, and there is not arrangement to have APC as tenant on the property. Clearly the invasion and occupation of the building is immature politics, unnecessary provocation and outrightly illegal.

    6. In an official statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Governor Ayade defended his invasion of the PDP secretariat on the ground that he paid the rent for the current year. We do not know who governor Ayade gave money to; he can ask for his refund because PDP paid the rents and we have the rent receipts to show. Governor Ayade can bring his own proof of payment. Neither Governor Ayade nor the APC are privy to the tenancy agreement between the PDP and the Lessor.

    7. Even if PDP were in breach of any term of the tenancy (which we are not), there are laid down processes and procedure for ejection of tenants and recovery of premises which need to be followed. A third party has no right to forcefully move in and occupy a building with a sitting tenant still in lawful possession. It may be necessary for Governor Ayade to seek some education in this elementary area of law so he may mitigate his embarrassment.

    8. Upon decamping to APC Governor Ayade declared pompously that in Cross River once the Governor moves everyone follows. To Governor Ayade’s consternation and embarrassment, nobody followed. Governor Ayade has now adopted unconstitutional methods to compel his cabinet and appointees, and other public office holders to follow him to the APC against their choice of remaining in PDP. Members of the House of Assembly have been offered 2 million naira and an SUV each if they agree to decamp. Commissioners in Ayade’s cabinet are being offered 3 million naira and a car each to defect to the APC. Local government chairmen and councillors are under threat of removal from office unless they defect. All appointees of the governor have been instructed to produce their APC membership cards before they can receive salaries.

    9. The defection of Governor Ayade to APC is to cost Cross Riverians 2 Billion naira. This is what Ayade needs to buy defectors from even his cabinet to follow him to the APC. Even this filthy lucre put forward by Governor Ayade is not enough to compel obedience as several commissioners from his cabinet, and majority of members of the House of Assembly and other political office holders have elected to reject the Greek gift and stay with the people of Cross River State in PDP.

    10. Governor Ayade can readily expend 2 billion naira to fund his defection to APC because he has ready cash from the almost 19 Billion naira recently paid to Cross River state as refund for federal road maintenance undertaken by the PDP administrations of Governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke. Governor Ayade has refused to declare this money to the people of Cross River state and is frittering it away on purposes other than the common good of Cross Riverians.

    11. We call on Governor Ayade to declare this 19 billion which is the single largest revenue flow to Cross River State since the creation of the state, and to apply same in infrastructure like rural roads, urban road network and water which benefits the common man. We are all embarrassed that governor Ayade inherited the best public water supply systems developed by the PDP administrations of Governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke across the state, and has allowed them today to all fall into disrepair. Our people have gone back to streams and wells for water.

    12. Magistrates in Cross River state have been demonstrating at the gate of Governor Ayade’s office demanding 2 years unpaid salaries. Two days ago teachers were on the streets of Calabar demonstrating in demand for 5 years of unpaid salaries. Pensioners in their old age were forced to block the Murtala Mohamed Highway in protest for non payment of pensions. This is at a time that Governor Ayade received almost 19 billion windfall from the federal government.

    13. Governor Ayade’s exuberance to impress the APC leadership has led him down this path of impunity, illegality and flagrant abuse of the mandate of the people of Cross River state. But as Governor Ayade plunders the state ostensibly to please the APC, we notice the deafening silence from the state and national leadership of the APC. Silence means acquiescence; an endorsement of the shenanigans being perpetrated on behalf of the APC by Governor Ayade. The people of Cross River State now know how the APC intends to run the affairs of the state and are getting ready for the worst.

    14. We again appeal to the APC leadership to call Governor Ayade to order and remind him that Nigeria is a country governed by laws in spite of nation’s experience in the last 6 years. While we continue to appeal to our teeming party members to remain calm in the face of extreme provocation, this should not be interpreted as a sign of weakness or cowardice. We are acutely aware of all the legal remedies available to us in the circumstances, and we intend to engage the appropriate processes to propagate the rights and interest of our party.

    15. The Cross River State police command provided cover for thugs sent by Governor Ayade to invade the PDP secretariat and forcefully occupy same. Currently the police have stationed an armoured personnel carrier (APC) at the gate of the PDP secretariat. In an official statement, the police command explained their actions; that the police were merely giving cover to the owners of the building to carry our renovation works on the building.

    16. Certainly, the Cross River state police command know that the building has been the secretariat of PDP for 22 years. The police have also received letters of protest from the PDP; the police now know that they were hired to give cover while the crimes of unlawful entry, criminal trespass, malicious damage to property, theft and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, were being committed at the PDP secretariat. It tells badly on police intelligence gathering if as at today police claim to still be ignorant of the fact that they have been misused to aid criminality. The continuous presence of the police till date at the PDP secretariat signifies active mischief, rather than honest mistake, on the part of the police.

    17. We therefore call on the police authorities to call their officers and men to order, and focus attention on the apolitical responsibilities of the police.

    18. We thank the people of Cross River state, and Nigerians in general, for overwhelmingly standing by the PDP, and for pledging continuous support to the party. We are particularly elated at the show of solidarity with the party and assure fellow Cross Riverians that the development agenda which the PDP pursued under Governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke will be restored after the Ben Ayade era.

  • Ayade’s Defection: PDP Dissolves, Replaces Cross River State Caretaker Committee

    The National Working Committee of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, has dissolved the State Caretaker Committee for the Cross River State Chapter of the party.
    In a release signed by the National Publicity of the Party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, and sighted by TheLumineNews, named a ten man committee headed by the immediate past Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Effiok Cobham to oversea the affairs of the party.

    The release reads in full “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), has approved the dissolution of the State Caretaker Committee for the Cross River state chapter of the party

    “The decision is in pursuant to the powers conferred on the NWC by the PDP Constitution.

    “Consequently, the NWC has constituted a new State Caretaker Committee to pilot the affairs of the chapter of the party at the state level

    “The members of the new State Caretaker Committee for Cross River state are as follows:

  • Directorates Of Legal Services, CNA Advises Senate President To Swear-In Jarigbe Agom

    The Directorates of Legal Services, the Deputy Clerk as well as the Clerk of the National Assembly has advised the President of the Nigerian Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawn to swear-in Rt. Hon. Jarigbe Agom as the senator representing Cross River Northern Senatorial District.

    In a memo addressed to the Senate President and sighted by The Lumine News, indicates that the President of the Senate is invited to see from page 1 of the file, paying particular attention to paragraphs 2 and 3 and is humbly advised to swear in Hon. Jarigbe.

    The advise as addressed to the Clerk of National Assembly, by the Directorates of Legal Services reads in parts “from pp. 44 – 45 is the legal opinion of the Directorate of legal services addressing that since the Supreme Court by a majority decision on the 25th day of February, 2021 struck out the notice of appeal filed by Senator (Dr) S. A. Odey, then the Court of Appeal decision recognising Hon. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe should be given effect to, by the National Assembly as evidenced in certificate issued by INEC.

    “Accordingly, you may wish to call upon the Distinguished President of the Senate to swear in Hon. Jarigbe please”

    Acting on the legal advice, the Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly and the Clerk of the National Assembly, has advised the President of the Senate as seen in the attached memo to swear in Rt. Hon. Jarigbe Agom.

    “The President of the Senate, you are please invited to see from page 1 of file, paying particular attention to paragraphs 2 and 3 and be humbly advised to swear in Hon. Jarigbe”.

    It is unclear why the Senate President has remained silent as regards the memos on his table recommending Jarigbe for swearing-in.

  • Governorship Zoning Process In Cross River State Politics: The True Position From Our Institution Library And Archives – Joe Bisong

     

    From the fits and starts of intervening Civilian and Military rule of decades past, democracy finally settled and stabilised in Nigeria in I999. Since then, to present day it has been unbroken civilian rule. It is therefore a given and common sense that when Cross Riverians talk of ZONING OF THE GOVERNORSHIP OF THE STATE, such dates back to 1999.

    1.ZONING in Cross River State has neither been a FORMALISED NOR INSTITUTIONALISED ARRANGEMENT. Although the three Senatorial Districts of the State have each produced a Governor dating back to Mr Donald Duke (South), Sen Liyel Imoke(Central),
    Sen Prof Ben Ayade(North), at no time has the political class of Cross River State, either intra Party or inter Party, institutionalised or enacted on the modus operandi or modus vivendi of the Rotational Governorship basis for the three Senatorial Districts! This is why in virtually all Gubernatorial elections, both intra Party and inter Party, ALL SENATORIAL DISTRICTS HAD CONTESTED!

    2.Rather, ROTATION HAS BEEN THE TREND BASED ON THE SIMPLE AND CONVENTIONAL PROCESS OF SELF ELIMINATION! Once a given Senatorial District got the Governorship for eight years, it eliminated itself from eligibility from the succeeding contest that followed. Such has the wily nilly process of ROTATION BY SELF ELIMINATION evolved that has seen all three Senatorial Districts get the Governorship and accordingly,all have been duly placated!

    3.This first circle of Rotation by self elimination ends in May 2023; and a new circle of same Rotation by self elimination commences . Accordingly, we shall provide proof to our assertion that conventionally, IT HAS BEEN AN ALL COMERS AFFAIR FOR ALL THREE SENATORIAL DISTRICTS IN ANY GIVEN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION and that Rotation has been based on self elimination of the immediate Senatorial District that just left office after eight years; but not on any formal or institutionalised process!

    4. In 1999 intra Party Primaries in PDP, Mr Donald Duke from the South ran the Governorship Primaries with Barr Kanu Agabi from the North, while Prof Eyo Etim Nyong from the South ran with Mr Mark Ukpo from the North in APP.

    The Governorship election of 1999 was ultimately between Donald Duke from the South and Mark Ukpo from the North.

    5.In 2003,the Governorship election was between Mr Donald Duke of the PDP from the South and Chief John Okpa of the APP from Central.

    6.In 2007, the PDP Governorship Primaries was between Sen Liyel Imoke from Central and Mr Walter Eneji and Dr Julius Okputu from the North. The Governorship election proper of 2007 was between Sen Liyel Imoke of PDP from Central versus Prof Eyo Etim Nyong from South and Paul Ukpo from the North

    7. In fact, it is worth mentioning in retrospect, that even after Sen Liyel Imoke of Central had won the Governorship election in 2007, the North in Ukpo, engaged the Central in prolonged and convoluted litigation at the Election Tribunal that saw
    Imoke’s victory annulled twice.
    8. In 2011,Imoke from Central ran again for his second term against Eyo Etim Nyong, Ima Isa Adegoke(Labour Party),both from the South and Dr Onyuike(Accord Party), Mary Ekpre(CPC), Goddy Akpama (PPA) and Usani Usani(ACN)from the Central.

    9.Then, finally came the present tenure which dated back to 2019. The Governorship election was between Sen Prof Ben Ayade from the North, Sen John Owan Enoh from Central and BARR EYO EKPO FROM SOUTH! In fact, it is instructive to note that Barr Eyo Ekpo, then a renowned stalwart of PDP, decamped from PDP to Social Democratic Party (SDP) only for the purpose of running the 2019 Governorship election.

    10.Conclusively therefore, as it was in the beginning, and now is, so shall it be in 2023 Cross River State Governorship Election! To whom God wills, let the power fall, then the conventional or normative process of ZONING BY SELF ELIMINATION FOR THE THREE SENATORIAL DISTRICTS starts from there and then again in this new circle.

  • Breaking: Supreme Court Declares Rt. Hon Jarigbe Agom, Winner of The PDP CR North Senatorial Bye-election Primaries..

    The apex court in the land, the Supreme Court has declared Rt. Hon Jarigbe Agom, Winner of the PDP CRnorth Senatorial bye-election primary.

    The judgment was delivered today, February 25th, 2021.

    This has put to permanent rest the controversy of who is the authentic senator representing Cross River Northern senatorial district.

    The FCT High Court and the Court of Appeal had declared Rt. Hon. Jarigbe Agom winner of the CR North primary election.

    Dissatisfied with the ruling of the court of Appeal and the trial court, Dr. Stephen Odey approached the Supreme claiming that he was the legitimate winner of the primaries.

    Delivering the judgment, four out the seven man panel, gave judgement in favour of Sen. Jarigbe Agom while three backed Dr. Stephen Odey.

    In telephone chat with The Lumine News, Prince K J Agba congratulated Sen. Jarigbe Agom for his dogged disposition to resit the attempt of foisting someone on the good people of northern senatorial district and described the ruling as victory for the people.
