A Tribute Of Gratitude, And Radiant Impact To Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor @ 60 BY DAVE IMBUA

When I arrived at the Department of History and International Studies, University of Calabar as a young undergraduate, Dr. Sandy Onor – as he was then known – was not physically present. Yet his name filled the air. He had left to serve as Executive Chairman of Etung Local Government Area, but in the classrooms and corridors, he remained a standard. Lecturers invoked him as a model of brilliance, discipline, integrity, and academic distinction. Even in absence, he reigned supreme.

Years later (in 2012 to be precise), destiny granted me the rare privilege of meeting him in person. He was then Commissioner for Environment in Cross River State; I was Lecturer II in the University of Calabar. Through his late bosom friend, Dr. James Ewah, he invited me to see him. That meeting changed my life.

He told me he had heard of my discipline, dedication, and scholarly commitment – and that he wanted us to collaborate in research. These were the very virtues for which he himself was known. I accepted the offer without hesitation. When I informed my revered mentor, Ambassador Prof. Okon Edet Uya, he welcomed the idea but expressed a fatherly concern: that Sandy Onor might eventually draw me into politics. His fear was that those meant to preserve academic excellence often depart, while those who should leave remain.

What followed was not a loss to scholarship, but an expansion of purpose. Our collaboration enriched my intellectual life and strengthened my professional journey in ways too numerous to recount. It made resources available for me to conduct research and publish in ways that would have been difficult otherwise.

Then came 2019. Against formidable odds, Sandy Onor was elected Senator. In a move that reflected rare courage and clarity, he appointed me his Senior Legislative Aide – the highest position among his aides – despite our being from different senatorial districts. In a political climate where geography and ethnicity often dictate opportunity, he chose conviction over convenience. That decision alone speaks volumes about his character. By God’s grace, we left meaningful footprints in the Senate.

To me, my encounter with Senator Professor Sandy Onor is divine benevolence. God brought him into my life as a pillar – one man doing for me what many may not receive from a multitude in a lifetime. His generosity is instinctive, not calculated. He sees nothing as too great to do where friendship, loyalty and merit are concerned. He has opened to me the vastness of his heart and resources, ensuring that I never lack the means to pursue any noble cause. He embraces my family as his own, relating with my wife and children with warmth and dignity.

Yet beyond personal benevolence stands something even more compelling: his seamless fusion of scholarship and statesmanship. He is proof that intellect need not be abandoned in public office, and that politics, when guided by ideas, can be noble. He bridges the academy and politics, thought and action, reflection and reform.

At 60, Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor is not merely older – he is deeper, stronger, and more luminous. Sixty years of learning. Sixty years of service. Sixty years of lifting others. Sixty years of courage.

Today in Abuja, we do not merely mark time; we celebrate impact. We raise our glasses in sixty resounding cheers – to a scholar of distinction, a statesman of conviction, a mentor of rare generosity, and a friend of steadfast loyalty.

May the God who ordered our paths to cross grant him many more fruitful decades. May his wisdom expand, his strength be renewed, and his influence multiply. May the years ahead surpass the years behind in grace and accomplishment.

Happy 60th Birthday, Distinguished Senator Professor Sandy Ojang Onor.

The name that once reigned supreme in absence now shines even brighter in presence – and in the grateful hearts of those whose lives he has transformed.

    By Elijah Ugani

A former governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, in Cross River State for 2023 general election, Sen Sandy Ojang Onor, has had called for peace among party faithfuls.

TheLumineNews can authoritatively state that some aggrieved members of the party have sought the resignation of the State Chairman, Venatius Ikem Esq.

Senator Sandy, appealed to party members called on the aggrieved faction to sheath their sword and embrace peace.

Onor stated that the internal strife will not do the party any good, rather, putting the party on the line against oppositions in the state. Onor averred that division cost the party at the national and in the state in the previous elections.

The letter reads: “In the last two weeks, I have observed on the Cross River State PDP platform, a resurgence of calls for the resignation of the State Chairman, Barr. VenatiusI kem.

“I have had the opportunity in the past of meeting with the protagonists of these calls and I have maintained the position that it would be totally injurious to our party at this critical time in our political history, to remove our State Chairman. My position on this matter has not changed and is not likely to change at all.

“I appeal for constructive compromise between the Chairman and those who seek his ouster. As stakeholders of a political party, we must disagree from time to time but we have no liberty for disagreeableness. It is wanton disagreement more than anything else. that destroyed our party in the last elections for the National to the State levels and we cannot afford to accommodate the same vicious virus, moving forward.

“Let the falcon hear the falconer. Let all the stakeholders sheath their swords and resolve their differences, or at worse, tolerate themselves since we only have one year left of the tenure of the present state executive committee. Let us all prepare to engineer the changes we want to see in the next state congress which is not far from now.

“I would continue to pray for God’s favor, wisdom, humility and grace upon all of us. I remain yours truly.”

  • Sandy Heads To Supreme Court As Court Of Appeal Upholds Otu’s Victory

    Elijah Ugani

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos on Wednesday, November 22, has upheld the ruling of Tribunal by declaring Governor Bassey Otu as the winner of the March 16 governorship election.

The Appeal had dismissed the Appeal by Sen Sandy Onor and PDP against Prince Bassey Otu as lacking in meirt.

The governorship tribunal had earlier dismissed the petition by Sen Sandy Onor and PDP brought before it against Prince Bassey Otu and APC.

The tribunal had held that the matter before it was a pre-election matter.

Reacting to the judgement of the Court of Appeal, the Director General of Caterpillar Movement, Chief Joe Obi Bisong, in release he personally signed and sighted by Theluminenews, said that the judgement did not represent the full conviction of the processes that led to the election and they will seek further legal opinion on the next steps.

  • Panic In APC As Court Of Appeal Delivers Judgement On Sandy Vs Otu Tomorrow

    By Thelumine Admin

There seemed to be mix feelings among members of the ruling All Progressive Party APC, in Cross River State as the Court Appeal set to deliver judgement on the appeal brought before by Sen Sandy Onor and the PDP against Prince Bassey Otu and APC.

Some of the stakeholders of the APC who spoke to TheLumineNews on condition of anonymity, maintained that there are a lot of lapses on Prince Otu’s administration as they alleged that his wife is more in charge of governance.

There regretted their initial insinuations that Prince Otu was going to depart from the era where the former governor’s younger brother was running the administration of the state, but that they have entered another one chance where a woman is put in charge of the administration of the state.

There are of the opinion that Sen Sandy Onor is more prepared for governance, and that however the judgement goes, they don’t have much to loose, as Prince Otu is not ready to look anybody’s face.

Their fears is premised on the fact that most of the recent judgements delivered by the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, has a semblance with the case between Sen Sandy Onor against Prince Bassey Otu.

Their worries is that if the Lagos division of the Court of Appeal, takes a cue from that of Abuja Division, it therefore means that the matter will be determined on its merit other than being dismissed as it was done by the tribunal.

Another APC stalwart who just identified himself as Asuquo, expressed confidence that Prince Otu will win the case as it appears that most of the governorship appeals are favorable to the APC, that Prince Otu case will not be different.

  • Sandy Appeal Against Otu: Court Of Appeal Reserves Judgement

    By Ndifon, Joseph

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Lagos, has reserved judgement in the appeal filed by Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) against the judgement of the Governorship Panel of the Cross River State Elections Petition, which affirmed the victory of Sen. Bassey Edet Otu in the Governorship Elections.

A three-man panel of the court, led by Hon. Justice (Name withheld), announced this decision on Saturday, November 4th, 2023, after counsels for the parties adopted their brief of arguments and made their final submissions.

Unsatisfied with the judgement of the tribunal, Sen. Onor had approached the higher court, citing 34 grounds of appeal in an effort to set aside the judgement of the lower court.

Sen. Onor and the PDP, represented by their lawyers led by Dr. J. Y. Musa, SAN, urged the court to uphold the appeal and set aside the judgement of the Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal, which had previously dismissed their petition.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sen. Bassey Otu, and the All Progressives Congress (APC), through their respective lawyers, have requested the court to dismiss the appeal for lacking merit.

Sen. Onor, who secured the second position in the election, argued in his 34 grounds of appeal that the tribunal had made legal errors and reached an incorrect conclusion when it dismissed his petition.

The court also re-affirmed the victories of Sen. Jarigbe Agom and Barr Godwin Offiono as winners of the Cross River North Senatorial and Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency Elections respectively.
