The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General O.O. Nafiu, has emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between the Scheme and corps employers in enhancing service delivery and improving the workplace experience of corps members.
Speaking at the 2026 Corps Employers Workshop held in Calabar, General Nafiu commended corps employers for their consistent commitment to mentoring corps members and providing meaningful workplace experiences. He acknowledged their contributions to sustaining the legacy of the NYSC through strategic collaboration and capacity building.
The Director General urged employers to assign corps members responsibilities that would enhance their employability skills and equip them to meet the evolving demands of today’s workplace.
The workshop, themed “Fine-Tuning Stakeholders’ Collaboration to Enhance Corps Members Welfare and Workplace Experience,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening collaboration for improved corps members’ welfare and productivity.
Represented by Mr. Emmanuel Obot of the NYSC South-South Area Office II, Rivers State, General Nafiu assured stakeholders of the Scheme’s commitment to deepening its partnership with employers through regular monitoring, effective feedback mechanisms, and collaborative problem-solving initiatives.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Cross River State Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition and Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Barr. Ijom Ukam; the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Henry Ayuk; and the Chairman of Calabar Municipality, represented by the Secretary to Council, Elder (Comrade) Iso Bassey.
In her welcome address, the NYSC State Coordinator in Cross River, Mrs. Joke Oyenuga, welcomed participants and highlighted the need to prioritize the welfare and safety of corps members throughout their one-year national service.
Participants at the workshop commended the NYSC management for organizing what they described as a timely and impactful engagement. They called for the workshop to be sustained as a platform for strengthening collaboration between the Scheme and corps employers, while reaffirming their commitment to supporting the objectives of the NYSC.
