The Cross River State Government has assured National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state of its commitment to resuming the payment of the state monthly allowance while also addressing other welfare concerns affecting the scheme.
The assurance was given by the State Commissioner for Education, Senator (Prof.) Stephen Odey, during a courtesy visit by the management of the NYSC Cross River State Secretariat to his office.
Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Odey pledged to present the issues of the non-payment of state allowances and the deteriorating condition of facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp to Governor Bassey Otu for urgent intervention. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare and security of corps members, as well as providing a conducive environment for them to carry out their national service effectively.
The Commissioner commended the State Coordinator of NYSC in Cross River State, Mrs. Joke Oyenuga, for her dedication to the welfare of corps members. He assured the delegation that the state government is determined to address the challenges confronting the scheme and provide lasting solutions.
Reflecting on his own experience as a former corps member, Prof. Odey recalled the significant contributions corps members made to his academic development. He stressed the need to make Cross River State an attractive and safe destination for corps members by prioritising their welfare through improved facilities and enhanced support.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Joke Oyenuga, appealed to the Commissioner for immediate intervention in the rehabilitation of dilapidated orientation camp facilities and the payment of monthly state stipends to corps members serving in Cross River State.
According to her, improved welfare packages and better camp infrastructure would not only enhance the well-being of serving corps members but also encourage more prospective corps members to accept deployment to the state.
