GOODWILL MESSAGE BY THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF OBANLIKU LOCAL GOVERNMENT EVANG. HON. (MRS) MARGARET INDE ON THE OCCASION OF NIGERIA’S 60TH INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

    By Admin

The Executive Chairman of Obanliku Local Government Area Evang. Hon. (Mrs) Margaret Inde on behalf of the good and patriotic people of Obanliku LGA is delighted as she felicitates with the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, the Governor of Cross River State, His Excellency Senator Prof Ben Ayade and indeed all Nigerians at home and in diaspora on the occasion of our nation’s 60th Independence day Anniversary.

For the past six decades, Nigeria has constantly celebrated 1st October of every year to commemorate our nations independence.

Today affords us another opportunity as a people to retrospect, review and look forward as we continue to build a great nation.

The time is ripe for us to show that we are a great people from a great nation and this can only be achieved through our collective engagement in positive endeavors and attitudinal change to our country’s value system.

As we celebrate our nations Independence, let’s remember our leaders who gave their lives in the battle for the freedom we are enjoying.

Also think on what we can do to sustain the gains and protect this heritage for the generations yet unborn.

We must put extra effort into performing our civic responsibility.

Our diversity in tribes, languages and culture should not be seen as weakness rather as our greatest strength.

Let us be mindful of everything we can do for our nation to make it a place of wealth, peace, and happiness.

As we remember our national heroes today, let’s renew our pledge to always live together in peace and harmony in our communities.

Nigeria @ 60: Goodwill Message by The Chairman Obudu LGC, Hon. Boniface E. Ewhe.

    By Elijah Ugani – Calabar

The Chairman of Obudu local government council, Mr. Boniface Eraye Ewhe has called on the youths of Nigeria to feel the special pride of being citizens of a free nation and charged the youths to exercise some restraint in their restiveness as we anticipate a better Nigeria.

Mr. Ewhe made the call in a felicitation message to mark the 60th independence celebration of our nationhood.

Find full text of the address:

“It is my great pleasure to felicitate with the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Muhammadu Buhari, Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade, all the people of Nigeria, living in the country and abroad, in general and Obudu Local Government Area in particular, on the occasion of 60th Independence Day.
October 1st fills us with the excitement of unfurling the tricolour, taking part in celebrations and listening to patriotic songs. School children coming out to take part in match pass, traditional dances and other forms of activities to commemorate this day.

“On this day, the youth of Nigeria should feel the special pride of being citizens of a free nation. We are very appreciative and we gratefully remember our freedom fighters and martyrs whose sacrifices have enabled us to live in an independent nation.

“The ethos of our freedom struggle forms the foundation of modern Nigeria. Our visionary leaders brought together a diversity of world views to forge a common national spirit. They were committed to the cause of liberating Nigeria from oppressive foreign rule and securing the future of her children. Their thoughts and actions shaped the identity of Nigeria as a modern nation.

“The celebrations of Independence Day this year will be rather restrained. The reason is obvious. The whole world confronts a deadly virus which has disrupted all activities and taken a huge toll. It has altered the world we lived in before the pandemic.

“It is a fact that after 60 years of independence, there is still much to be done as we attempt a comparison with other countries. However, be rest assured that we are in the trajectory to mend our paths.

“As Chairman of Obudu Local Government Council, I want to reassure my people of my commitment to the ideals of genuine stewardship and providing the needed basic needs in line with the available resources.

“Let us not loose hope in our country. Let me also use this opportunity to call on all sons and daughters of Obudu to consider making our contributions to guarantee the Obudu of our dream.

“It is my honor also to use this opportunity to call on the youths of Obudu in particular and the country at large to exercise restraint in their restiveness, while as leaders, we are charged to live up to our responsibilities by providing the leadership we yearn for.

    “Once again, congratulations!
Long live federal Republic of Nigeria
    Long live Cross River State
Long live Obudu local government area.

    “Hon. Boniface Eraye Ewhe
    Executive Chairman,

  • Religion And State By Barr. Vena Ikem

Religion And State By Barr. Vena Ikem

    By Admin

Our Constitution guarantees a secular state. It also guarantees freedom of worship. God’s centrality and preeminence in our lives is not underscored by the appointment of any Religion’s agents as Religious Assistants to the Heads of Govt, however described.

When did our Governor suddenly discover that he needs this much Religious assistance? I hope he understands the separation between religion and God!

What I can advise him for free is that what he needs is more of God’s grace and mercies, not Religion’s Assistants!

I can take him on a historical journey that will include the atrocities that Religion visited on society and how God, not religion came to the rescue. At some point Church and State became one. Indeed it is on record then that reading the Bible became heresy for the non clergy and punishable with death!

Atrocities are still committed even in the modern day Church in God’s name. Many high ranking men of God are standing trial in various courts around the world for violating innocent underaged children under their care including a cardinal and an Archbishop to mention only two.

Modern church intellectualism will easily confound you with the theory of the Church as the “body of Christ” , but I will retort to you that left to St. Paul, the preacher of such theology, women would not even have a place in the church! The patriarchy that runs through St. Paul’s theology is, to say the least, embarrassing in the light of today’s realization of the role of women in God’s Kingdom and indeed against the background of the same Church’s veneration of the Queen mother of our Lord and the special place of Mary and Martha in Jesus’ Ministration.

St. Paul’s epistles clearly demonstrate the shortcomings of man as the messenger of God as distinct from Christ’s original preachings. Of course these are acceptable, with the understanding that afterall Paul himself was a mere human being. This is not helped by the fact that Paul was a latter day convert who didn’t have the privilege of witnessing Christ first hand.

This is not to diminish his impact or the impact of his mission. It, however, underscores the infinite imperfections of Man as a human being! This is further emphasized by the fact that despite St. Peter being one of Christ’s first Apostles that were called to the Ministry, “one of those he loved”, St. Peter consistently faced Christ’s rebuke for his frequent gaffes and misunderstanding of the essence of Christ’s true mission. Indeed this went on to the very end of his ministry when at the most critical moment St. Peter, despite having been “crowned” by Christ as the “Rock upon which he will build his church”, meaning his successor of sorts, still managed to deny him just before his arrest, crucifixion and eventual death, as predicted.

It is remarkable still that Christ through it all never withdrew the mandate he gave to Peter as the head of his church. The reason is obvious: he wanted us to appreciate how infinitely imperfect man is! He taught us what tolerance means.

Consequently, we live on and at His Mercy and by His Grace not because of anything we have done or that we EARN it. We can never earn His Grace by any action of ourselves but by the free gift of His Grace from the Holy Spirit!

5 dozen men of God “Assisting” the Gov cannot earn him the grace of God. It is freely given. Titles cannot earn it. Visiting men of God wouldn’t.

Just stop corrupting everything in the name of Politics because you risk annoying God further by desecrating His sacred Temples and sanctuary thinking that you can BUY His Grace by buying the men of Religion!

The gospel of Christ is a message of love. Love for everybody even those that make it so hard to love them. Love is for everybody not just a select few and family.

If you love those who love you only, then you haven’t truly loved. True love is when you love even when there’s no reason to. True Love is demonstrated in loving the downtrodden. St. James said, “True Religion is helping the windows and orphans”! Loving the stranger, like the Samaritan. True Love is not in vendetta and settling of petty scores.

Christ’s last act as man was to forgive those who crucified him because he said, ” for they know not what they do”!

I know how impossible this is for some people and that’s why Christ said salvation is as difficult as passing a camel through the eye of a needle!

Herein lies the challenge and it cannot be solved by appointment of Religion Assistants! Our land needs healing because atrocities are crying out for Justice! No man of Religion masquerading as God’s messenger can pray that into being!

The Injunction is simple: seek Mercy and forgiveness. But no one grants you forgiveness except yourself. It’s that simple: if you want forgiveness from God, go and forgive those who offended you so that you will gain forgiveness from those you offended. That’s the Lord’s prayer!

A word is enough for the wise!

    Happy Sunday!

    Vena.

  • NLC Vows To Proceed On Nationwide Strike Over Increase In Petrol Pump Price And Electricity Tariff

The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has said that come Monday, September 28, it will be embarking on a nationwide protest over the increment in fuel and electricity prices.

The organised labour on September 16 gave the Federal government two weeks ultimatum to reverse the increase on both commodities or face a nationwide protest from September 28. Read here.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, September 22, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba said the protest action was inevitable since the federal government has refused to reverse the increase in electricity and fuel prices.

According to Wabba, the privatization of the electricity sub-sector, seven years down the line, have not yielded any positive report.

“Whereas the entire privatisation process, the entire sector was sold at about N400 billion. We are also surprised that government, within the last four years, injected N1.5 trillion over and above the amount that was used to sell these very important assets.

And therefore NEC came to the conclusion that the entire privatisation process has failed and the electricity hike is actually a process of continued exploitation of Nigerians.”

On the increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, Wabba said the move will only make life harder for the average Nigerian.

“On the issue of the refineries and also the increase in the pump price of PMS, these have further eroded the gains of N30,000 minimum wage,” he said.

In the light of all of these, NEC decided to endorse the two-week ultimatum given to the federal government to try to reverse those obnoxious decisions. And also pronounce that the action proposed by the Central Working Committee is hereby endorsed by the NEC that 28 of September will be a date that those actions will be challenged by Nigerian workers, our civil society allies and also other labour centres.” he added.
