    COVID-19: Buhari releases 2,600 prisoners to contain coronavirus outbreak

     

    President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of 2,600 prison inmates across Nigeria.

    The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced at a press conference on Thursday, April 9, 2020, that the amnesty is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to decongest the custodial centres and discourage the spread of coronavirus (COVID19) in the country.

    The minister said that the affected inmates are state offenders in custodial centres across the country.

    He noted that the amnesty only applies to inmates who are 60 years old and above; those suffering from ill health that could be terminal; inmates serving three years and above and have less than six months left to serve; inmates with mental issues; and inmates with options of fine not exceeding N50,000.

    The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced the amnesty during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday (Daily Trust)

    Aregbesola said the amnesty will not apply to inmates sentenced for violent offences such as terrorism, kidnapping, armed banditry, rape, human trafficking, and culpable homicide.

    “The president has graciously approved this request and others,” the minister said during a press conference.

    He said governors of all 36 states in the country will complete the amnesty exercise in line with the federal principle.

    41 federal inmates and 29 inmates in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja who met the pardon criteria will be released today from the Kuje Custodial Centre, the minister said.

    As of April 8, Nigeria has recorded a total of 276 coronavirus cases in 16 states and the FCT.

    44 people have recovered and been discharged, but six people have died.

    The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria CBCN, has granted the Presidential Task Force Committee to combat the spread of the dreaded Corona virus.

    This was disclosed to the Chairman of the committee, Boss Mustapha who is also Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, in his office on April 8, 2020.

    Leading the CBCN delegation, the Most Rev. Dr. Ignatius Kaigama, the Archbishop of Abuja, acknowledged the excellent efforts of the government in curtailing covid-19.

    Archbishop Kaigama then read the massage of the CBCN, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiro Akuebeze, Archbishop of Benin, where CBCN in solidary with the good people of Nigeria and the government, granted th Presidential Task Force Committee full access to 435 catholic hospitals and clinics in Nigeria.

    CBCN further presented it National Health Secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Okechukwu should the comittee needs his services and also as the liason officer to all catholic facilities in the country. Copies of the booklet cataloging the addresses of the health facilities were submitted to the SGF.

    The Archbishop further informed that the Catholic Church has the structures, track record, and the reach in terms of public mobilization and the expression of solidarity with those under the burden occasioned by covid-19.

    The SGF thanked the CBCN for the show of solidarity, and importantly for making available over 400 health facilities to contribute to the efforts being put in place to curtail the spread of the covid-19 pandemic. He urged the church help in disseminating the massage personal hygiene and compliance with government directives, and assured that his committee would discuss the meanigful solidarity expressed by the CBCN and incorporate the offer in its programmes.

    A non profit organization, Children of Rural Africa CorAfrica, sensitized members of the public on the ravaging pandemic virus codenamed Covid – 19 as well as distributed hand sanitizers, face masks and food items to over 150 persons today, 8th April, 2020.

    The event was held at St. Thomas Aquina’s parish, Igoli-Ogoja local government area of Cross River State.

    The Executive Director of CorAfrica, Comr. Elijah Ugani, noted that “as part of our efforts to support the fight against the pandemic, covid-19, CorAfrica has decided to undertake on this sensitization to create the needed awareness to peevent the virus.

    “As for us in CorAfrica, this is awareness is not new to us it is part of our thematic areas, water, sanitation and hygiene WASH. We have decided to include children in this awareness because children are the most at risk as far as covid-19 is concern despite the fact that no child is reported to have been affected by the virus. If any of the parents is affected by the various, the child is directly affected.

    Ugani noted that “as schools are closed, children no longer go to school and there is no alternative measure for online lessons or home lessons to keep the children busy within this period and used the opportunity to call on parents to ensure that they guide their children or wards to study while at home”

    The ED used the opportunity to call on philanthropists, group of individuals and cooperate organizations to the challenge of the moment to partner with CorAfrica to ensure that the sensitization exercise is extended to other parts of the state.

    On her part, the representative of the Ogoja Head of Local Government Administration, Mrs. Helen Olufu thanked CorAfrica to have taken the bull by the horn to undertake the sensitization and especially for procuring all the items displayed for distribution.

    Olufu noted that “for all the sensitization I have witinessed here in Ogoja, this is the first to distribute the items I’m seeing here. I want to congratulate CorAfrica very sincerely and pledge that as a government, we will do whatever we can in our little way to support/partner with CorAfrica to continue this sensitization”

    In a similar vein, the Director General of Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Janet Janet David Ekpenyong thanked CorAfrica for its magnanimous thought and contribution to sensitize the public on preventive measures against covid-19 in line with the cross river state government advocacy and distribution of face masks.

    Ekpenyong was represented at the occasion by the Primary Health Care Coordinator in charge of Ogoja local government area, Mrs. Elizabeth Ochini, held that “for CorAfrica to have procured the items despites high cost of it must be commended we will do everything within our reach to support you to continue your good work, may God continue to replenish you. Please go home and ensure that all that you have been told here is put to good use as CorAfrica is a model for other organizations to copy”

    On his part, Dr. Cyril Ogbonna took time to explain the cause, effects and prevention of the virus to the participants and taught them on the various methods of hand washing and some of the participants demonstrated hand washing after the sensitization.

    Highlights of the event was distribution of hand sanitizers and food items to the participants.

    One of the participants who spoke to THELUMINENEWS, master stephen Ajock thanked CorAfrica for the sensitization as he now know how to wash his hands properly and held that “may God continue to bless CorAfrica the organizers of the sensitization especially for asking me to read my books, for giving me hand sanitizers and food items, I’m happy”

    As the world continue to contend the pandemic virus codenamed Civid- 19, the Cross River State government has maintained that on no account should any church hold procession during the palm Sunday, which according to the catholic calendar is billed for 5the of March, 2020.

    In a release signed by the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Rev. Father Bob Etta and made available to THELUMINENEWS indicates that only 5 persons are permitted per time to attend the palm Sunday masses/services.

    The release reads in part “His Excellency, Sir Ben Ayade KSJI the Governor of CRS, the Hon. Commissioner for Health and indeed the COVID 19 Response team in CRS wishes to thank CAN CRS for the great co-operation shown thus Far in the fight against Coronavirus in our dear State.     The Nigerian Medical Association in Cross River has launched a free Healthcare Connect Service at the Calabar Women and Children Hospital for residents in the state.

    Launching the Connect Service on Saturday in Calabar, Dr Ofem Enang, 2nd Vice President of NMA, National, said the service was meant to connect residents in the state with qualified healthcare personnel in view of the stay at home order of the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Enang said that the launching became necessary in other to help residents access quality healthcare within this period.

    According to him, the Connect Service will ensure that residents in the state are linked up with specialist on different medical fields to attend to their health needs.

    Speaking, Chairman of NMA in the state, Dr Agam Ayuk who gave out the numbers, 09081599993 and 09081599994, urged residents to call and lay complain whenever they have health challenges and needed prescriptions or referrals to any health facility for treatment.

    Ayuk said that with the stay at home order of the government, suspected Covid-19 cases and others who may have other healthcare needs may be prevented from accessing desired or required healthcare.

    He explained that hospitals and other health institutions were doing everything possible to keep crowds away from the hospitals.

    “As we prepare to contain Covid-19, we must not lose sight of other health challenges faced by the populace, especially the vulnerable in Cross River and beyond.

    “Our consulting rooms are scanty for the above stated reasons; pertinent questions that should bother us as healthcare providers are; has Covid-19 made other diseases to suddenly disappear?

    “If the answer is no, where are the patients receiving care? If they can’t get to the certified professionals, are they seeking help from quacks or they just remain at home and bear their burden and wait for dead?

    “The focus of the Connect Service is to provide citizens the go-to-place to access evidence based, Covid-19 public health and safety information”, he said.

    He further said that the Connect Service will also identify and manage other health problems requiring over the counter medications based on standardized protocols.

    According to him, the centre will also request essential laboratory tests, where necessary for patients with minor health problems based on standardized protocols.

    “The centre will also provide remote consultation for patients with chronic illness for the purpose of ordering medication refill or schedule hospital appointments for them with their respective hospitals to keep them safely away from the public.

    “The e-health centre will also provide online triage of respiratory infections and scheduling special appointments for these patients with relevant hospitals.

    “The centre will also provide those on schedule healthcare appointments with a valid, verifiable electronic pass to see their respective doctors and home service when necessary for the elderly”, he said.

    Six  persons tested positive for coronavirus have escaped from their isolation centre in Osun state on Friday night, 3rd of April, 2020.

    The six patients according to Nigerian Tribune belong to a cluster of COVID-19 cases who recently returned to the state from Ivory Coast.

    Upon their return to Nigeria on Saturday, March 28, 2020, Osun state government immediately isolated the travellers at Gedu in Ejigbo.

    But six of them escaped from the isolation centre on Friday night.

    An official who spoke to Daily Trust said the state government has launched a manhunt for the patients.

    The Health Commissioner, Dr Betta Edu on receiving the items said the foundation has gone beyond bound to show earnomous support to the state as this is a fight for humanity and appreciated the founder of the foundation, Engr. Ben Akak and others who have made this donation possible.

     

    According to her this is a huge response to the team effort in tackling the dangerous pandemic as the state will ensure those who have supported the course of the fight will have their names written in gold as remembrance of their efforts for future purpose.

    Breaking: LSUTH Sends Away Man Who tested Positive For Corona Virus For Lack Of Bed Space

    Mr. Emmanuel Benson was sent home from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital having being tested positive for corona virus for lack of bed space.

    Benson who had hoped to be quarantined and treated at LUTH after being at the government-owned hospital on March 21, was disappointed when he was asked to go home for inadequate bed space in the facility.

    SaharaReporters had reported that since the refusal of LUTH to admit Mr. Benson, he had returned home and continued his normal life.

    “He moved to and from LUTH through public transportation.

    “He has being mingling freely with people”  a friend to Benson told SaharaReporters on Thursday.

    When contacted on Thursday night by SaharaReporters, Benson confirmed that he tested positive for the virus and was not admitted to LUTH by medical personnel.

    Benson disclosed that he went for the test after coming in contact with the two UK returnees at a dinner party in Lagos last week.

    Benson on Whatsapp chat with one of SaharaReporters correspondent, stated that “I am at home for self-isolation now.

    “I had the test at LUTH even though the queue was too long.

    “They said I should go back in 14 days or that in seven days, they might call to check on my progress.

    I was infected at a dinner party organized for the two men who returned to Nigeria from the UK.

    “I went for the test on March 21”

    When asked if he had attempted to contact the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control to notify them of his situation and probably seek help,Benson said, “I have called the NCDC lines several times, but they are not picking up their call”

    To give credence to Benson’s situation, the NCDC on Thursday night announced 12 new confirmed cases of Corona Virus in Lagos.

    This now bring the total number of confirmed cases in Nigeria to 65 and one death recorded.

    Till date, less than 200 persons have been tested for the virus despite Lagos state alone having a population of over 20 Million.
