CROWEI/Asuquo Ekpenyong Foundation Provides N50,000 Micro Grants For 1,000 Women In Cross River

No fewer than 1,000 women active in micro and small businesses have received a grant of N50,000 each from a collaborative scheme of the Cross River Women Emancipation Initiative (CROWEI) and Asuquo Ekpenyong Foundation (AEF).

At the launch of the scheme for 2022 in the commercial city of Ikom, the Wife of Cross River State Governor, Her Excellency, Dr Linda Ayade, who was full of enthusiasm for the training and support of women in business to boost their productivity commended the Asuquo Ekpenyong Foundation for partnering with CROWEI to empower women across the 196 wards of Cross River State.

She disclosed that “CROWEI will continue to stand firm with women in all their endeavours while calling for more participation of women in leadership/business positions that would grow the local economy”.

The Founder of the Foundation, Mr Asuquo Ekpenyong disclosed at the event that he was motivated to inaugurate the project designed to support 1,000 micro & small business women across the state by the challenges businesses were going through.

“A wise man taught me that ‘we don’t give because we have enough, we give because we care enough.’ We must find ways to alleviate the suffering of our people. I am convinced that one of the ways to do this is through supporting our women. As primary caregivers in the home, uplifting women will uplift entire families because they extend those resources across the members of the home.

“In my experience, people do not want to be given fish. They want to be taught how to fish. They want to be given the tools to improve their lives and the lives of their families.

“Therefore, it is highly imperative that businesses become more sustainable as well as scalable in order to drive growth in the local economy,” he said.

“At the height of the lockdown in 2020, CROWEI was very instrumental in alleviating the hardship women faced across Cross River State. During the lockdown, Asuquo Ekpenyong Foundation also supported the State Government with a donation of N25 million in cash and medical supplies to assist in its welfare interventions.

“Today, we go a step further. The Asuquo Ekpenyong Foundation has trained 1,000 women who are currently engaged in micro & small business on financial management to enable them access loans and grow their businesses. We carefully selected these women who are resident and doing business across the 196 administrative wards of Cross River to ensure that we develop a model case”, he said.

He noted that at the end of the training programme, the Foundation disbursed N50,000,000 in Micro Grants of N50,000 each to all 1,000 beneficiaries to scale up their working capital.

He concluded by saying “In all, I am very excited to begin 2022 on this note. Our disbursement partner is Ekondo Microfinance Bank, and it occurred to me that Ekondo is the Efik word for universe. Women make up more than half of our universe. If they don’t prosper, we can’t thrive.”

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Nkoyo Okon from Akparabong Ward but married from Calabar, said the grant would help her to expand and meet up with the demands of the season, especially her yam trading business.

Another young lady Ms Favour Ushie, from Bekwarra, expressed gratitude to CROWEI and the Foundation for the financial assistance at a time like this. According to her, the Coronavirus has been a big setback to businesses, saying the financial aid was what she needed to relaunch her business.

NMDPRA Inspects Safety, Operational Facilities At Calabar Depot

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has undertaken an inspection visit to the depot in Calabar with a view to ensure that the safety and operational facilities are up to date.

Mr Ogbugo Ukoha, the Executive Director, Distribution System, Storage, Retail and Infrastructure of the Authority, was accompanied on the inspection tour by the Operations Controller, Calabar Field Office of NMDPRA, Mr George Ene-Ita, and other staff.

The team inspected the Dozzy oil and Gas depot, Ammasco petroleum chemicals company, Hyde tanks and terminals, North West Petroleum, Fynfield Petroleum, Sobaz oil, Alkanes Petroleum and Gas, jetties among others.

Speaking to newsmen after the tour, Ukoha said that one of the concerns of the marketers was the dredging of the Calabar channel.

The Executive Director said that the dredging would allow for bigger vessels to berth with petroleum product with a view to meet the storage capacity of the depot.

According to him, the oil marketers have identified dredging as one of their major concerns limitating the supply of petroleum product to their facilities at the jetty.

He disclosed that the peak consumption period for petroleum product in Nigeria was between November to January, hence the need to stabilise and ensure a seamless supply and distribution of the product.

“The draft of the Calabar channel was one of the concerns raised by oil marketers; due to this, they have to wait for the tide to come high before bringing in their vessels.

“With dredging, we can do more so that bigger vessels can come in because they have the capacity for storage.

“The oil marketers have also raised the issue of multiple regulation by different agencies; we will look into the issues and engage with other stakeholders because the Petroleum Industry Act is very clear, we are domiciled as the priority.

“It is very important that we do this and be mindful of the outcome of the pump price on the end users,” he said.

Asuquo Ekpe, The Scorer Of Nigeria’s First Ever Goal At The Africa Cup of Nations.

    Culled from Official Sport Chronicles

Since Nigeria made her debut in the 1963 AFCON in Ghana, there have been a number of memorable moments. However, one of such moments was Nigeria’s first ever goal in the competition. This feat was achieved by Asuquo Ekpe, earning him a place forever in the history books.

When/If You Come Across Creativity, Please Do well To Applaud It, It Wouldn’t Take Anything From You – BY ODENKE-ODEMONKE IBIANG

When/if you come across creativity, please do well to applaud it, it wouldn’t take anything from you.

If someone is good, they’re good, not being appreciative of their talent doesn’t change the fact that they’re gifted in that area, everyone has an area they’ll be celebrated if they make good use of such a talent or platform including you.

I have lots of you who openly and secretly tell me “you’re doing well” in your blogging/media profession and Humanitarian services and believe me, that means a whole lot to me and I don’t take those appraisals for granted.

Appraisal is a key performance index tool used by cooperate organizations to reward, promote, recommend, encourage or even demote etc it’s workforce and for many, a good appraisal figure helps in boosting their self eficacy and raises their morale to do more.

So learn to appreciate people when they perform excellently or are good with what they do, it isn’t going to diminish your self worth.

  • Bye-Bye To Governance, Welcome To Politics… BY AGBA JALINGO

Bye-Bye To Governance, Welcome To Politics… BY AGBA JALINGO

2022 has arrived with the expected political declarations to take power next year, and aspirants are all hitting the roads and combing the rusty clefts they abandoned in the last four years and oiling them for power grab. The people too are making a kill, feasting from the spoils of the quadrennial rendezvous of their cap-in-hand expectations which they must remit, every year preceding election.

The casualty of this melodious reunion is governance. It will come to a stand still. All over the country, the table has turned. It will all be politics until the end of the 503 days remaining. Even when this moment hadn’t come, it wasn’t as if anyone was governing us. What will now change is that, even the skeletal public services that can still be accessible now, will all be diverted into how to grab power come 2023.

In Cross River State, which is my specific interest, Governor Ayade’s tenure as far as governance is concerned, has effectively ended. It is election and handover date that are remaining. Let me be clear that even the governor does not realize what I am saying now and will not agree with me either. He will read this and laugh at me but I will explain. It will not be his will to abandon governance, if he was ever governing, but the sequence of events henceforth will so distract him that he won’t even be able to remember his regular work schedules.

You see the same way the tussle by Governor Imoke in 2014 to plant either Legor Idagbo as governor or allow Jedy Agba have his way or find an Ayade to later replace Legor, distracted Imoke to the point where even garbage could not be evacuated from Calabar, that is how the horse trading, intrigues, and politicking in the months ahead will distract Governor Ayade. Both from the opposition PDP and from within his own party, the APC, the contending interests will ensure every of his remaining days and nights are filled with scheming over who will get what in 2023 and nothing else. While the PDP will keep him busy in the State, some of his own party members who will be opposed to his choice and will want to lobby for the governorship ticket from their national headquarters, will force him to relocate to Abuja to fight for his political future.

Don’t also forget that the Ogoja/Yala federal constituency by-election, a very crucial win-or-mar election for the Governor, is still underway, later this year. And the worst of it all is Governor Ayade’s Presidential ambition. That is not just a major major project and final distraction from governance, it will be a primary conduit to fritter the little resources of our State by an excited governor. His exco, his legion of appointees, the entire government will collapse into that ambition. He is just waiting for the APC National Convention to hold before he joins the fray.

All the talk about completing the airport, super highway, deep sea port, cala this and cala that, rice mill and chocolate factory and all that long list, have all gone into voice mail. He will continue to mouth them and continually refer to them in his public speeches and that’s where it will end. They will window dress them periodically to score political points like they did with calachika during the Yuletide season and when the primaries come in August or thereabout, officials will start telling you government is a continuum, so the next governor will do the needful.

This will not only happen to Governor Ayade. Even our national and state assembly members will suffer same fate as well as the LG chairmen. They will put governance in the limbo. They will stand akimbo. Interestingly, the people won’t bother. Because the politicians are busting bundles this season. The people will think the bundles are good governance and as far as the bundles continue to rain in the various marathon political meetings that will be holding, it will suffice for the people as good governance.

I thought it was important to let you know this. That in the remaining 503 days to May 29, 2023, it is bye bye to governance and welcome to politics. Cut your expectations if you still had any, and save yourself a heart.

    Yours sincerely,
    Citizen Agba Jalingo.

FCE Obudu Mourns Dr Joseph Wayas, Describes His Death As A Monumental Loss To The College

F.C.E, OBUDU MOURNS THE RT. HON. DR. JOSEPH WAYAS

The Federal College of Education, Obudu is in deep mourning over the death of the Right Honourable Dr. Joseph Wayas, the founding father of the College. The announcement of the demise of this great statesman was made by the Governor of Cross River State. His Excellency, Senator Professor Ben Ayade on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.

For the College, and indeed the entire people of Cross River North Federal Constituency which he once represented at the hallowed chambers of the Senate of the Federal Republic, the exit of this iconic personality marked the end of a glorious era that was remarkably noted for his progressive politics, unbridled statesmanship and love for the people.

The Right Honourable Dr. Joseph Wayas had served the Country as Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983. During this period, he was able to build bridges of love and understanding with his colleagues and also promoted the core values of justice, equity and fairness all over the Country. As a result, he became a father-figure to so many and was greatly loved and admired for his progressive politics which was anchored on making life more meaningful for everyone. He touched lives in very significant ways and made giant prints in the sands of time.

The Federal College of Education, Obudu remains the greatest beneficiary of the political struggles of this visionary leader. As Senate president, he caused the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari to establish the College in 1982. This institution of higher learning has grown in diverse ways and now awards both the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and degree in various programmes in affiliation with the University of Calabar. With the establishment of the School, access to quality tertiary education effectively became entrenched in the area. Today the College remains the pride of the good people of both Obudu and Obanliku Local Government Areas of Cross River State.

Dr. Joseph Wayas continued with his pioneering efforts by mobilising his enormous goodwill in both government and the society at large by attracting monumental infrastructural development to the College. This can be attested to by the quantum of physical and structural development that are currently on ground in the College. He sustained this legacy of conscionable development of the College throughout his life time. Even with the challenges of old age and precarious health conditions which had put him out of circulation for some time, the Right Honourable Dr. Joseph Wayas had rallied the support of other numerous benefactors on behalf of the College.

While reacting to the news of the passage of this great leader, Mrs Grace A. Undie, Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council on behalf of the Council, Management, Staff and Students said the demise of the most respected Right Honourable Dr. Joseph Wayas is indeed a monumental loss to the College. She pointed out that Senator Wayas was a strong pillar that had supported the College right from inception and prayed God to give him eternal rest in His Kingdom. The Registrar captured the mind-set of the entire College Community as we will all remain eternally grateful to this selfless patriot for his unequalled contributions to the establishment, growth and development of our great College.

May his Soul rest in Peace. Amen.

Today, I have decided to single you out to say thank you for all your support.

Mrs. Agbo Ogar of Ogoja Urban Ward ii described Mr Odey as God sent as majority of those who benefited from his benevolence had lost hope of what to eat during the Christmas considering the high cost of food stuff in the market.

Mr Odey had earlier in the month distributed 20 motorcycles to APC ward Chairmen and party stalwart across the ten wards of Ogoja to ease mobilization of party faithfuls.
