World Hepatitis Day: CRSG Partners SOGHIN And Lions Club To Mark Day With Street Awareness, Screening And Vaccination

    By Simon Ushie

The Cross River State Government in collaboration with Society for Gastro Enterology and Hepatology in Nigeria and lions club International
joined the global Community in marking this year’s, “World Hepatitis Day” across all 18 Local Government Areas of the state with street Awareness/road show
Screening and Vaccination of citizens against the disease.

In Calabar, the state capital, the procession was led by the Director General of the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong who represented the wife of the state Governor, Dr Linda Ayade as she led the sensitization
across adjoining streets in Calabar Municipal Council.

Speaking to newsmen after the street awareness and campaign to enlighten the general populace of one of the World deadliest diseases, Dr Ekpenyong disclosed that, the prevalence of Hepatitis particularly Hepatitis Band C in the state, calls for intensified Sensitization and precautions in order to effectively manage it’s spread.

She said, considering that the disease is highly infectious and a silent killer, it is important people have understanding of what Hepatitis is, it’s signs and symptoms as well as its mode of transmission which unprotected sexual activities, blood transfusion and sharing of sharp objects are the major means of getting infected with Hepatitis B and C virus.

She noted that with this year’s theme : ” Bringing Hepatitis Care Closer to You”, the focus is now facility and community oriented as she promised that, the screening will now be done in as many facilities as possible to encourage people to voluntarily get themselves tested , vaccinated and treated as the case may be.

” We are encouraging all of our people to come and get tested for Hepatitis.
The most common among us are the type B and C which affected over 70 million people in Africa in 2021 and over 20 million people in Nigeria according to the World Health Organization.
With this year’s theme, ” Bringing Hepatitis Care Closer to You”, we are ensuring that, we get the necessary kits and attention to our various Healthcare centres within our respective Communities in order to encourage our people to voluntarily go into facilities for
    screening and Vaccination.
We have mandated all of our personel to carry out screening for all pregnant women who come in for antenatal services just like the practice with HIV.
For today’s activity, over 500 people will be screened and Vaccinated.
We have also set up a special team to visit Boki Local Government Area which records the highest number of Hepatitis infection in the state, to ensure testing and Vaccination, we are ready to combat the virus and possibly put an end to Hepatitis related deaths”.
However, we will appeal to federal government and international organizations to pay attention to Hepatitis by ensuring free access to testing as well as Vaccination, because currently, such services are not free.
Also speaking, Dr Mbang Ada, a consultant Gastro Enterology and secretary of SOGHIN highlighted the common symptoms of the diseases ranging from fever, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, jaundice, weight loss etc. She also reiterated the need for pregnant women to be tested and those positive should ensure that their babies receive the special vaccine that will protect them against the disease. She also said SOGHIN is committed to supporting the state in ensuring that positive Hepatitis cases will be linked to where proper treatment will be instituted.
She encouraged Cross Riverians not to wait for government, but should take the leap and get tested and vaccinated.

Oluwakemi said the female squad is a special squad in the NSCDC, formed through a Memorandum of Understanding between the Minister of Interior and the Commandant General of NSCDC to protect lives and properties especially in schools across the 36 states of the country.

According to her, “we are carrying out sensitization programmes in schools to be security conscious, encouraging them to install surveillance devices and reaching out in cases of emergencies via our hot lines. • The Choice Before Cross River People Is A Simple One BY DOMINIC KIDZU

The Choice Before Cross River People Is A Simple One BY DOMINIC KIDZU

There is really no difficulty in making the supreme choice come 2023 for the people of Cross River State as it will be indeed for the people of Nigeria, because the issues are not complicated in the least, and the choices are etched in simple bold print. It will be the choice between crass failure, criminal negligence and pathological telling of lies to the people and a broad new canvass of opportunity to try someone new, someone vibrant and credible. It will be a choice between the impunity, the audacity and the recklessness of the current administration and the broad promise of a serious alternative that will be forthright and respect systems, conventions and propriety while working for the good of the people. It is going to be refreshing to listen to the Governor or his aides speak and to believe what one hears in a way that has been impossible for over seven years now.

As Senator Sandy Onoh cryptically hinted in Saint Charles Catholic parish, Obudu, the day after he received the cross of Saint Gregory the great; “We are not going to tell lies to our people when we get into government. We shall be honest with our people. We shall promise what we can do and shall not promise what we cannot do. The simple reason that you are in government is not sufficient for you to become a liar to your fellow citizens who put you in office “.

And now at last the chicken are coming home to roost because there is a whirlwind of political consciousness and rebirth that is demanding restitution for the years of plundering and a new start for the stricken Cross River State, despoiled and raped by the present leadership that does not seem to understand when enough is enough. As Mahatma Gandhi put it “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.” If only they know when to stop and think and begin to repair. We the people must rescue ourselves by taking sides with our dear state, since brinkmanship has fallen flat on its face. As accordingto Martin Luther King Jnr, “There comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him it is right.” Ala General Yakubu Gowon, to kick APC out of Cross River State is a job that must be done!

The APC is in a glass jar and we can now all see what it contains. The indices at last have vindicated the PDP because facts and figures don’t lie. A vote for the APC in Cross River is a validation of failure as our new standard of measurement. A vote for APC is a vote for the continuation of the years of famine, for the rule of the artful dodgers and crafty contrivers.

A vote for people who believe Oscar Wilde’s joke that ” any man who lives within his means suffers from a painful lack of imagination.” There shall be no more salaries because the banks will shut their doors against them. Already business activities have grinded to a halt. There shall be weeping and knashing of teeth and this land shall be left desolate.

Unfortunately, Sweetprince, the party’s governorship candidate, is just a sacrificial lamb whose role will be to wash the putrefaction of his sponsors with hyssop and leave his followers holding the can. We all have a responsibility to save Sweetprince, (God bless his kind heart) from himself and the bagage
men pulling him by the tither. Because they will make a mess of him. They will dent his image. They will destroy his reputation. They will place the rot of eight years squarely upon his head and continue to ask for more. They will make his name a byword, even amongst his kith and kin. And he shall not be able to utter one word contrariwise in his own defence.

The descent to infamy shall be swift. And, alas, in the end Sweetprince will become Bitterprince and things will fall apart, and the centre will nolonger hold, because he can only be a puppet on the leash of the master godfathers who cannot be satisfied or surpassed. And then ofcourse, a cow will not give birth to a goat. The old Sweetprince shall depart poste haste, leaving behind a grotesque reincarnation of gorgon medusa, a scary king in the service of his earthly gods who have chained him to the floor in advance. And this fallen house, to borrow the words of Karl Maier, shall finally crumble into nothingness.

  • Celebrating An ICON, Justin UDIE PhD, On The Occasion Of His 40th Birth Anniversary BY ELIJAH UGANI

Celebrating An ICON, Justin UDIE PhD, On The Occasion Of His 40th Birth Anniversary BY ELIJAH UGANI

Birth anniversary is very special day in the lives of men who have made significant impacts in the lives of men and I think Justin Udie has touched my life and that of many others and so he deserves to be celebrated.

On this auspicious day of his birth anniversary, I feel it is proper to make frank attempt to chronicle a brief profile of one of Obudu born Nigerian whose life is an inspiration to me and a lot of Nigerian Youths globally.

Before the long storyline, let me a very warm happy birthday wishes to a brother, friend, associate and mentor, pray that God almighty continue to bless and grant him good health and the very best in all his Undertakings.

To the best of my knowledge, Dr Justin was born in Kakum town, Obudu LGA. As it is the case with most Obudu families to ensure children receive the required education, Justin started his educational pursuit at St Theresa’s Primary School, Ipong, Obudu LGA, where he obtained his FSLC before proceeding to Government Science School, Ipong and later Government Science School, Akamkpa where he sat for the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in 2001.

Justin was admitted into the University of Calabar to study for a Bachelor of Science (BSC) degree in Genetics and Biotechnology, where I met him. He mentored me and many other students.

At the completion of his degree in Unical, he was mobilised and called-up to participate in the one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and posted to Niger State in 2010. While in Niger, he embarked on and discharge several personal Community Development Service projects to the benefit of his host community and Nigeria in general. As a result, he was nominated and screened for the President’s NYSC Honours Award. As part of the award, Justin and a few other youths who demonstrated excellence in community development received a Presidential handshake, a medal of honour, cash prize, automatic employment into the Federal Civil Service and a joint post graduate scholarship for master’s and doctorate from President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR).

In line the award, Justin proceeded to the United Kingdom where he obtained a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Oil and Gas Management from Coventry University in 2013 and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in in Climate Change from the Institute of Sustainable Development, De Montfort University, respectively.

Dr Justin also obtained a second Bachelor’s of Art (BA) degree in Global Business Management from Bournemouth University, UK. As part of his professional development, Dr Justin obtained a postgraduate diploma in Academic Professional Apprenticeship, Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice, offered by Advance HE, UK. He also obtained a professional certificate in Strategic Business Management as part of his professional development endeavour from Harvard University Extension School, Boston, USA.

Dr Justin Udie has contributed his knowledge in some agencies both in Nigeria and in the UK. He was first recruited into the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), as an Assistant Route Commander (ARC); an appointment he would later resign to pursue the packages of his NYSC award. As a result, he joined the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, as Scientific Officer.

    Justin Udie

In the UK, Justin was Lecturer at Leicester Castle Business School, before resigning to join Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University, as Lecturer and later Senior Lecturer in Management.

Dr Justin has relentlessly continued to transition both in academics and career pathways in search of whatever inspires him. He recently resigned his Senior Lecturer role with Nottingham Trent University to join ATKINS Global as Senior Consultant, Climate and Net Zero Advisory – Atkins SNC-Lavalin, London. One of the global leaders engineering, design, project management and consulting company, based in London.

Undobtably, Dr Justin is also putting his entrepreneurial skills to work across different sectors. He is the Founder of Nottingham Development College (NDC), Nigeria and Global Entrepreneurship Hub (GEHUB), UK, and acccording to him, these are consultancy and training platforms aimed at advancing the development of students, graduates, and early career’s professionals.

As earlier mentioned, Justin effectively participated in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Minna, Niger State where he received a traditional Chieftaincy title from the Nupe Community as – DAN WAKILI NUPE, for Exceptional Community Development Service in April 2010. This is an interesting part of Justin’s life that should inspire a lot of youths globally.

During the one year mandatory NYSC, Justin undertook the following projects that has become pivotal to his formation and improved the living condition of Nigerians in Minna. These include:
Renovation of borehole and building of water tap in Kwangila, Minna at the peak of dry season that plunge the community into water crisis. He sponsored the registration and birth certification of about 250 children with the National Population Commission, to support Niger State Government planning. Initiation of the formation of NYSC Sanitation Club in Kwangila. The club engaged in monthly sanitation exercise in the community for eight (8) months. Intensive sensitisation of the people on healthy living and the need for positive response to government sanitation initiative. Donation of working tools to sanitation club to facilitate and sustain the sanitation exercise, and liaise with Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA) for waste evacuation from Kwangila.
Acquired and distributed disposable waste bags as a more sustainable means of waste disposal.
Carried out a sensitization program on “Fire and Fire incidence Management at the Niger State Hospital Management Board, General Hospital, Minna where experts demonstrated practical firefighting approach in a hospital setting.
Donated a 2kg gas refillable fire extinguisher to the hospital as a means of sustaining firefighting programme.
Donated food items, detergents and writing materials to the children at the Government Orphanage Home, Minna.
Designed a bespoke handout on Computer Appreciation and trained 9 children of the Orphanage in ICT from February to April 2011.
Organised a sensitisation campaign on the “Dangers of Social vices and Examination Malpractices” for SS III students at Government Day secondary School ‘A’ & ‘B’ sections and donated one hundred copies of a book “Campus Nightmares” to the students and the school libraries. Organised free practical biology lesson for and guided the SS III students at Government Day Secondary School ‘B’ section till the commencement of their WAEC examination in May 2011.
Justin authored a book titled Contemporary Issues on HIV/AIDS & Health Education during the 12 months of the NYSC scheme to the shock of the leaders of the scheme. With the book, he staged a public campaign against HIV/AIDS in public Schools in Minna. It is on record that about one thousand (1000) copies of this book were distributed free to vulnerable students at most major secondary schools in Minna. No wonder he was nominated for the President’s NYSC Honours Award.

Interestingly, Justin is a corporate trainer, facilitator and a keynote speaker with rare wisdom to dissect the most complex topics in the simplest way that wows your audience, leaves them impacted, well satisfied, and increase your corporate and personal brand influence and value.

Dr Justin is a family man and reserve person. He is married to his beautiful wife, Eucharia and their union is blessed with children.

On the occasion of his 40th anniversary, I feel really proud to wish him a pleasant birthday celebration and ask for more blessings.

  • Concession of Cross River State Factories: Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again BY UMEZULIKE DESMOND-CRUZ

Concession of Cross River State Factories: Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again BY UMEZULIKE DESMOND-CRUZ

In his book, Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again, the legendary Playwright, Olawale Gladstone Emmanuel Rotimi, best known as Ola Rotimi, satirizes the immorality, dubiousness and double-dealing predominant in the Politics of Nigeria.

Major Rahman Taslim Lekoja-Brown, a retired army officer left his successful cocoa business to join partisan Politics. He did so, not because he loves to serve the people but because of what he has to gain: Money and Fame. He married his eldest brother’s wife and also married another woman, Liza, who was an American Catholic nurse. But when he joined partisan politics, in order to win more votes, especially from the women, Lejoka-Brown married yet another woman, Sikira, the daughter of the president of the Market women union.

Like Lejoka-Brown, our own husband of Cross River State, sees Politics as the only means of survival after leaving his businesses in Delta State to join partisan Politics. In other to achieve his aim, he entered into a holy matrimony with the people of the Northern Senatorial District. In his 4years of marriage to the North, he pamperized, mesmerized and romanticized the people of the Northern Senatorial District, that every maiden in Cross River State, saw him as the Prince charming and Mr. Right that Cross River State desired.

We ran after him and accepted his marriage proposal. 7years afterwards, our husband went mad. He has taken away everything that we once held sacred. He has stripped us of our beauty and denied us the joy of a blissful matrimony. He sold our heritage and took away our pride. He invaded our rainforest in Boki, Etung, Obubra, Akamkpa and Ikom and buried our economic trees.

He promised us heaven, but delivered hell. 7years afterwards, our husband has gone mad again. This time around, our husband has surreptitiously concessed our factories to a faceless entity without our consent. In his defense, he claimed he conducted a referendum yet none of his wives (Constituents) can attest to when and where this referendum was conducted. We heard he concessioned 38 State factories, yet we saw no advertisment on any print or electronic media, nor did we participate in the concession process.

Nevertheless, like Liza, who returned from America to discover that she was not the only woman in Lejoka-Brown’s life, and as expected from a typical western Catholic Woman, led a women liberation Movement that finally led to the booting out of Lejoka-Brown out of the National Liberation Party, we the wives of Cross River State, shall in 2023, reclaim our land and divorce our now-estranged husband. Revolution is coming!!!

We urge our husband to forgo his ill-fated ambition of returning to his first marriage, Northern Senatorial District, and save himself the unnecessary stress of contesting for the Senate, given the reality of the electoral act and the recent judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Ebonyi State. We urge him to save himself some dignity, lest he faces the same fate that befell his friend from Yala, Dr Steve Odey.

The gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, for the 2022 general elections and senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Sen Sandy Onor has called on students of COLMCILLE Memorial Academy Egrude – Ntamante, Boki Local Government Area to take their studies very seriously and shun all forms of vices that will impact negatively on their academic performances.

Sen Sandy who was represented by the Director General of the Caterpillar Movement, Chief Joe Obi Bisong, made the admonition during the meiden graduation ceremony of COLMCILLE Memorial Academy Egrude – Ntamante, Boki LGA held on Saturday, July 23rd 2022.

The lawmaker identified and condemned the deteriorating rate of learning among students in our contemporary society, especially in the rural setting. He charged the students to rise to the challenge of the moment by taking their studies very seriously and put in their best to enable them compete favorably with other students when the need arises.

Speaking further, senator Onor decried the increasing rate of drug abuse amongst students, which he referred to as a fertile ground for the upshoot of prostitution, cultism and occultism among young people.

He said, “When you do drugs and become intoxicated or high, it becomes easy for you to be initiated into cultism. When you get initiated, you begin to look for ways to protect yourself from harm, that is how you will have to move from drugs to cultism and to occultism, where you finally sell yourself to the devil”.

He used the opportunity to commend the management and staff of the institution for all the efforts and sacrifices made to inculcate the needed knowledge in the students which he referred to as future Presidents, Governors, Engineers, Medical Doctors among other professions. He stressed that the students needs to be given nothing less, than the best as the generation next rest on them. He congratulated the school, parents and students for the successful outing of the madein graduation ceremony.
