Linda Ayade Takes Medical Outreach To Itigidi, Abi Local Government Area

The wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Dr Linda Ayade has organized a medical outreach for Itigidi, the Abi LG Headquarters on 21st to 23rd March, 2022.

The outreach which is a partnership between her NGO, the Mediatrix Development Foundation, the Cross River State Ministry of Health and Faithcare International, has offered various medical services including free laboratory tests, dental care, eye care and major surgeries to the people within the environs.

Speaking during the activity, the Medical Superintendent of the Eja Memorial Hospital said the coming of the Governor’s wife had sharply increased the pace of activities in the facility, an indication that people are in desperate need of medical services but are unable to afford to pay for it. He said about 300 people registered on the first day and the number had tripled on the second day. He thanked Dr. Linda Ayade for for helping the vulnerable and called on others to do same.

Earlier, the Nigerian Director of Faithcare International said theirs was a Christian organization committed to the demonstration of the love of God by addressing the spiritual and medical needs of people. He confirmed that apart from counselling and other services, they were carrying out tens of surgeries daily, some of them major operations.

Both patients and their relatives were exultant and thanked the medical team. One Madam Jenny Livinus Imoke showered words of blessings on the Governor’s wife for saving the life of her sister who had battled breast cancer for 8 years with no hope of ever being able to afford the needed treatment.

Sharing his view of MDF’s intervention in the area of health, a member the NGO’s Board, Mr. Fred Abua, said he was excited at what MDF had been able to accomplish in the lives of the beneficiaries of these outreaches over the years. It would have been difficult, if not impossible for some of them to pay for what they were receiving. He revealed that in every location the organization had been over the last 7 years, cancers, hernias, lumps, appendicitis, malignant growths, etc, had all been removed and a new lease on life given to the people at no cost to them.

Mediatrix Development Foundation has held about 10 free medical outreaches since it’s inception and has reached thousands of Cross Riverians with life-saving services. The team is now at General Hospital, Ukem, Odukpani, where another outreach is taking place.

  • Full Text Address By Linda Ayade To Mark First Anniversary Launch Of The Global Strategy For The Elimination Of Cervical Cancer

Full Text Address By Linda Ayade To Mark First Anniversary Launch Of The Global Strategy For The Elimination Of Cervical Cancer

AN ADDRESS MADE BY THE WIFE OF THE GOVERNOR OF CROSS RIVER STATE AND FOUNDER OF MEDIATRIX DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION, DR. LINDA AYADE, ON THE 29TH OF NOVEMBER, 2021, DURING THE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE LAUNCH OF THE GLOBAL STRATEGY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF CERVICAL CANCER.

One year ago, the Commissioner for Health and the Director-General of the Cross River State Primary Health Care Development Agency joined the Mediatrix Development Foundation team to celebrate the launch of the Global Strategy to Eliminate Cervical Cancer that was adopted and launched by the World Health Organization on the 17th of November 2020.

The strategy, coded 90-70-90, implies that with this global strategy, the world must work to ensure 90% of girls are fully vaccinated with HPV vaccine by age 15 years; 70% of women get screened with high performance test by 35 years of age and again by 45 years of age; and 90% of women identified with cervical disease receive treatment.

Available data shows that 19 out of 20 countries with highest burden of cervical cancer are in Africa. Therefore, implementing the global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer is of utmost importance as the burden of cervical cancer in Nigeria is one of the highest in the world. Every day, 41 women residing in Nigeria are diagnosed of cervical cancer most of which occurs at the late stage while another 29 women die each day as a result of cervical cancer complications. It is the second most frequent cancer among women between 15 – 44 years of age.

About 3.5% of women in Nigeria are estimated to harbour cervical Human Papilloma Virus-16/18 infection at a given time, and 66.9% of invasive cervical cancers are attributed to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) 16 or 18. Therefore the vaccination of girls against HPV remains the single most effective approach to eliminating cervical cancer as public health issue.

Unfortunately, due to a global shortage of the HPV vaccine causing lack of access for us in Nigeria, we must take a closer look at our progress in the effort to eliminate cervical cancer and make new commitments while re-strategizing to ensure better access to HPV vaccine, sustainable screening programmes and adequate treatment measures.

Through my NGO, the Mediatrix Development Foundation, I will continue to work with the Cross River Ministry of Health, Primary Health Care Development Agency and other critical stakeholders who are engaged in the fight to end the menace of Cancer in Cross River State.

I will like to thank my dear sisters, First Ladies Against Cancer, FLAC. This is our team of First Ladies of both serving and past State Governors who are waging a commendable war on all types of cancer in Nigeria. It is our earnest desire to see cervical cancer becoming part of the national discourse among policy makers and receiving appropriate funding. Only when our national programming includes cancer care will we agree that cervical cancer has received the attention it deserves.

We must all continue to spread the message about HPV Vaccination for every girl and woman. Let us unite with survivors, advocates, communities and partners to mark 1 year of the global effort. Join, be inspired, and #glowteal to eliminate #cervical cancer in your community and beyond.

Today, we have invited you all in order to secure your buy-in, consent and readiness for piloting a vaccination programme in Holy Child Secondary School for girls of 9 – 14 years of age. Following your consent, we will carry out a pilot phase of vaccination for some of the girls in the next few weeks.

Innovate To Meet The New Normal, Dr. Linda Ayade Tells Staff.

The President of the Mediatrix Development Foundation and wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Linda Ayade, has said that the COVID-19 pandemic had created a new normal, and as such, visionary organizations must adopt new ways of doing things to achieve their developmental goals rather than waiting and wishing that things will return to how they used to be.

Speaking during an interactive session with staff of the Mediatrix Development Foundation (MDF), Dr. Ayade encouraged the staff to be especially creative in adopting new approaches in managing their school-based projects as the present reality no more encourages large gatherings, hence affecting the operations of the MDF Health Clubs in various schools across the state.

The Founder then called on all staff to put on their thinking caps and come up with innovative approaches in impacting communities in 2021 while tasking the management to step down trainings to the new staff.

Speaking earlier, the Chief Operating Officer of MDF, Mr. Jeffrey Adamade, briefed the President on the 2020 partnerships which he described as successful. MDF implemented various projects in the year under review including Peaceful Co-existence with UNHCR; the TAFT project focusing on empowerment of Refugees and Host communities in Akamkpa with UNWOMEN; and, the US Embassy-funded small grant project respectively.

About 15 of the 28 staff of MDF were present in the Calabar office during the interaction and each staff had the opportunity to share their experiences since joining the organization.

The Governor’s wife encouraged the staff to be diligent in their work and to consider their contributions to the NGO as an investment into humanity and their own career growth.
