  • UNICAL: Dean Calls On HODs, Mobilization Officers To Strengthen Collaboration For Seamless NYSC Process

     

    The Dean of Student Affairs of the University of Calabar, Prof. Patrick Egaga, has called on Heads of Departments (HODs) and Mobilization Officers to strengthen collaboration to ensure a seamless and error-free NYSC mobilization process for Prospective Corps Members (PCMs).

    Prof. Egaga made this call during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the CES Conference Room, where key academic staff gathered to review and improve the mobilization procedures across the institution.

    In his remarks, the Dean emphasized the importance of using only senate-approved results in the mobilization process and warned against any form of compromise or undue influence from students or staff.

    “HODs should act as watchdogs to ensure Mobilization Officers carry out their duties diligently. Any mistake made in the mobilization process will be traced back to the department, and those responsible will be held accountable,” he warned.

    He further urged all departments to work in unity, emphasizing that consistency and cooperation between HODs and Mobilization Officers is critical to preventing errors and delays in student mobilization.

    The Dean also appealed to HODs to appoint mobilization officers based on capacity, integrity, trust, and service delivery driven output, rather than friendship.

    Also speaking at the event, , the Deputy Registrar, Student Affairs Division, Mr. Patrick Ibiang, delivered a paper titled “Enhancing Mobilization Process for Effective Service Delivery.”

    He clarified that the mobilization process begins and ends at the departmental level before final vetting by the Student Affairs Division.

    “Departments will bear full responsibility for any errors or invalidations, including the cost of reprinting university certificates,” he added.

    Mr. Michael Ikogor, the NYSC Data Entry Officer at the Student Affairs Division, gave a presentation on “Guidelines and Best Practices for NYSC Mobilization Data Entry.”

    He outlined frequent data entry mistakes and advised officers to verify information against senate-approved results.

    The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, providing attendees the opportunity to clarify issues and share suggestions to improve the mobilization process.

  • UNICAL Secures Full Accreditation For 24 Programmes From NUC

     

    The University of Calabar has secured full accreditation status for 24 programmes in the institution from the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC).

    In a letter signed by Engr. Abraham Chundusu, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the NUC, the Commission conveyed the outcome of the comprehensive accreditation exercise carried out in the institution in October/November 2024 to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Banku Obi.

    The full accreditation status indicates that those programmes will run for five (5) years before another accreditation exercise would be carried out by NUC.

    Similarly, six (6) programmes also got accredited status, while two programmes got interim accreditation. Interim accreditation status is valid for two years, after which the programme will be re-visited.

    The gains of the accreditation exercise underscores the VC’s commitment towards a sustained academic standard, a well structured curriculum, aggressive infrastructural development, promotion of academic research amongst others.

  • UNICAL SLT Students Records Excellent Performance In MPE Papers 3 & 4 Exams

    Students in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), University of Calabar have recorded a 99.9% pass in the Module 2 Mandatory Professional Examination (MPE) held in the month of March, 2023.

    The results schedule shows that twenty-six tertiary institutions took part in the examinations.

    In paper 3, of the 494 Unical students that registered for the exams, 492 passed while 2 students were absent.

    Similarly, of the 494 that enrolled from Unical for paper 4, 489 passed while 5 were absent.

    The results schedule however indicated that there were 10 irregularities for both papers for which the Head, Department of Science Laboratory Technology, Dr. Ivon Etta noted that “The few cases of irregularities as remarked were as a result of wrong Examination Reference Numbers which are being traced for rectification.

    “Recall module 1 was written last year October 2024, and we recorded 98% Pass, while module 2 was written in March this year 2025, and we just recorded 99.9% pass rate.

    “This outstanding performance can be attributed to hard work, dedication from students and Lecturers and the Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi, who created the enabling environment for robust learning and teaching.

    “I returned with about 158 Licenses for our inducted Graduates. 151 license are expected next week as the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology NISLT is releasing them in batches according to students’ compliance with the registration template”.

  • UNICAL Pledges Support for Fight Against Drug Abuse

    The University of Calabar( Unical) has pledged it’s unwavering support and commitment to combating drug abuse, recognizing its devastating impact on students and the broader community.

    This pledge was made by the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Patrick Egaga, when officials from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) paid a courtesy call on him in his office

    Prof. Egaga assured the NDLEA of the school management’s support and promised a smooth execution of their proposed events aimed at combating drug abuse.

    He emphasized the importance of addressing drug abuse, a long-standing issue affecting the school.

    While assuring the NDLEA of the institution’s full collaboration and partnership he advised them to make a proposal to the school management on their proposed event for drug sensitization.

    Prof. Egaga thanked the NDLEA for choosing to sensitize the students and staff of the University on the dangers of drug abuse.

    He said the institution’s commitment to supporting the NDLEA’s efforts align with the agency’s mission to combat drug abuse and promote a safer, healthier environment for Nigerian youths.

    Earlier, the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Drug Demand Reduction Unit, NDLEA, Cross River State Command,Nandi Roseline Ada highlighted the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people, aged 14-65.

    She stressed that drug abuse and academic success are mutually exclusive, and offered support for students struggling with substance abuse through rehabilitation facilities.

    The Deputy Commander also suggested implementing a Drug Integrity Test to deter students from using drugs and proposed sensitizing students during the school orientation.

  • UNICAL Announces NELFUND Loan, Assures Students Who Have Paid Complete Fees Of Refund

    ANNOUNCEMENT ON NELFUND LOAN 2023/2024 AND REGISTRATION FOR 2024/2025

    Students of the University of Calabar are charged to carefully note and be guided by the following:

    1. All beneficiaries of NELFUND Loan 2023/2024, who paid their fees for the session and are yet to graduate, will be given access to register for the 2024/2025 Session. In other words, the released 2023/2024 loan will be used to settle their 2024/2025 fees.
    As expected, when the 2024/2025 loan is released, the beneficiaries due to graduate within the session will be refunded after Bursary Clearance.

    2. The beneficiaries who paid their full fees in both 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 will be refunded the fee paid for 2023/2024 Session, pending the release of 2024/2025 Loan.

    3. Beneficiaries who graduated in the 2023/2024 Session will be refunded the fee paid to the University after Bursary Clearance.

    4. Beneficiaries and other students alike are urged to register for the 2024/2025 Loan, for which the verification of applicants is ongoing.

    5. Beneficiaries who made part payment in the 2023/2024 and have not settled the balance will have to pay it in 2024/2025.

    6. The dashboard of beneficiaries on the fee portal is to be configured to reflect NELFUND disbursement

  • UNICAL Suspends Lecturer, Joseph Idung For Extortion

    As part of efforts to sanitize the University of Calabar, the institution has yet  suspended another lecturer, Dr. Joseph Idung of the Department of Science Laboratory Technology.

    In a letter of suspension addressed to the lecturer and signed by the Registrar Gabriel Egbe, Dr. Joseph refused to return money collected from students for their induction into the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT).

    This is coming less than a week the Acting Head of Department of Pharmacology, Dr. Joseph Akpan was suspended and sacked from office after Management said it received a report from the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) revealing his involvement in the alteration of examination scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology).

    In the case of Dr. Idung, the Management expressed dismay at his refusal to refund the alleged extorted money.

    According to the letter, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi directed that he should be suspended from his official duties in the University to enable him face the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Monitoring Unit (ACTU), which has been mandated to investigate the matter.

    He is also directed to handover all University properties in his possession to the Head of Department and stay away from the campus unless while responding to the invitation of ACTU.

    “By copy of this letter, the Bursar is advised to place you on half salaries for the period of the suspension.”

  • UNICAL Suspends Head, Department Of Pharmacology From Duty

     

    Unrelenting in her bid to rid the institution of vices, the Management of the University of Calabar has announced the removal from office and suspension from duties of the acting Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dr. Joseph Akpan.

    According to a release signed by the University Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe, the Vice Chancellor took the decision having received a report from the Senate Examination Misconduct Committee (SEMC) revealing the involvement of Dr. Joseph Akpan in the alteration of examination scores in PHM 311 (Introduction to General Antimicrobial Pharmacology).

    The release reads in parts “…you altered 235 out of the 242 scripts marked by you. You also allotted marks to two students who did not participate in the examinations. You genuinely marked only five scripts without alteration. In your defense before the SEMC, you admitted that you inflated the scores of students in PHM 311 in order to “protect the image of the Department”.”

    The release adds that Management considers Dr. Akpan’s defense as ridiculous and unacceptable.

    Consequently, the University Management has directed that he should be relieved of his appointment as Head of Department and Coordinator of PHM 311, as well as suspended from duty with effect from October 8, 2024.

    While Dr. Akpan’s official responsibilities are to be reassigned to other qualified lecturers in the department, he has been further directed to stay away from the University forthwith unless while responding to the invitation of the AFIC.

  • UNICAL Suspends All Final Year Engineering Students

     

    The University of Calabar Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi has directed the suspension of all final year students of the Faculty of Engineering, over flagrant violation of extant policy on ban on reckless driving, flying of colors and wild jubilation in the guise of celebrating the completion of final examination.

    The suspension was conveyed by the institution Registrar, Mr Egbe Gabriel and dated September 25th 2024.

    The directives reads in full : “The Vice Chancellor is dismayed by the report she received concerning students of the Faculty of Engineering who, today September 25, 2024 who engaged in acts of lawlessness by flouting management directives as contained in our circular Ref. UC/REC/DISC.45A` dated August 7th 2024, on the ban on ‘Reckless Driving, Flying of Colors and Wild Jubilation after Examination‘ These students in fragrant violation of this extant policy, embark on actions that threatened the peace of the university. These students were seen engaging in reckless, lawless and noisy convoys in the guise of celebrating the completion of their final examination.

    “The Vice Chancellor is saddened by this development and has directed that all final year students of the Faculty of Engineering should be placed on suspension. Accordingly, the students concerned are hereby suspended with effect from Wednesday September 25th, 2024.

    “By this decision, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) is to ensure that all actions relating to the processing of results of the affected students are put on hold pending the investigation by the special committee put in place for the purpose.

    “The Dean Faculty of Engineering and all Heads of Department in the Faculty of Engineering are to ensure full compliance with this directives please”.

  • Fifty-five Thousand Naira Is For The Mandatory Professional Examination, Not Levy, Says SLT HOD, Mr Ivon Ettah

    The Head of Department of Science Laboratory Technology SLT, Mr Ivon Ettah PhD, has stated that the Fifty-five Thousand Naira (#55,000.00) charge is for the mandatory professional examination for all graduates of the department.

    Mr Ettah disclosed this to TheLumineNews while reacting to the widespread criticism of the levy where some students of the department and members of the public criticized the levy, wondering why students that are yet to complete their B.Sc. program are made to pay for professional levies.

    When contacted, the Head of Science Laboratory Technology SLT, Mr Ettah PhD, noted that “I resumed duty as the head of department last two weeks, and I got a notification from the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology NISLT, which I am an Associate Fellow, to ask our graduates.and final year students to register for the examination. A Google form was sent to me and I placed on the students Whatsapp group and asked our final students and those who recently graduated to fill the form, which was done free of charge.

    “The institute sent names of 315 persons who registered using the Google form to us and asked that they proceed to pay the sum of #55,000.00 each as part of the requirements to be qualified for the examination. And I placed a notice on the students WhatsApp group stating that registration fee is 5,000.00,  Certificate verification is 10,000.00 and 40,000.00 is for registration of modules 1 & 2. Each module costs 20,000.00”.

    In a release signed by the HOD, Mr Ivon Ettah PhD, and sent to TheLumineNews indicates that, students are to pay to:

    On why students are to pay into a departmental account, the HOD explained that it is a general directive and not restricted to UNICAL only. And noted that “Whatever is paid in UNICAL for the professional Examination is what is paid in all the Universities and Polytechnics offering SLT course”

    A brief search on Google on the mode of registration for the mandatory professional examination for the Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology shows that 400 level students are expected to register through their head of departments.

    “The Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) was established by Act 12 of 2003 of the National Assembly with the core mandate of “advancing the Science Laboratory Technology profession in Nigeria and ensuring through its registered Members, effective and efficient management and administration of all Science Laboratories in Nigeria.

    “In pursuance of its mandate, the Council of the Institute at its 32nd meeting modified and approved the new curriculum for the Mandatory Professional Examination (MPE). The MPE would be open to all graduates of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) from any accredited institution and students of SLT at 400Level or HND I in the University and Polytechnic respectively. Henceforth, passing the MPE would be the pre-requisite for Associate Membership of the Institute.

    “The examinations will be in two Modules with two (2) Papers per module. Candidates will be required to pass all papers in Module I before proceeding to Module II while those who fail any paper will have the opportunity to re-sit the paper. Candidates are expected to download the syllabus from the Institute website and prepare for the examination individually. The Institute shall conduct examinations at selected centers in the country at specific times of the year. After passing the MPE, all successful candidates would be inducted into the profession and will be issued an Annual Practicing License.

    “Graduates of SLT who wish to write the MPE should fill out the expression of interest form online and pay all the necessary fees. Once the payment is successful, the applicant is expected to proceed and fill out the MPE form. The form will be processed by the Institute. If approved, the candidates will receive their login detail and then be eligible to register for an examination (Module I or Module II or Re-Sit) he or she is qualified to write once the Institute schedules the examination. When the result is released, candidates will be able to log in to their portal and check for their results.

    “Students of SLT at 400L or HND I can register for MPE ONLY through their school. The HOD will be expected to profile all students of SLT with the Institute. Only profiled students can register for the examinations. It is to be noted that students CANNOT register directly with the Institute for MPE rather they must first be profiled by their respective schools and then presented for the examinations by their HODs”.
