New UNICAL Initiative Supports Divine Opportunity For A University Of Calabar With Prof. Stella Effah-Attoe

    By Admin

It has become crystal clear that God wants to reposition the University of Calabar for global competitiveness. It is also clear that He wants to use a woman to stabilize the University, improve interpersonal relationship as well as enhance the welfare and wellbeing of its staff and students.

Little wonder why very qualified women are among the top contenders for the position of Vice Chancellor of the University.

Professor Stella Effah-Attoe is both eminently qualified and indubitably ready to answer the call of God to do His will for the benefits of all and sundry in our dear University.
Professor Stella Effah-Attoe is poised to becoming the 11th Vice Chancellor of our noble University. Propelled by the urgent imperative to move the University from the periphery to the centre of academic excellence, she will hit the ground running.

There will be no precious time for witch-hunting; no time for vendetta, and no time for bitterness. It will be work, work, and work all the way to better the fortunes of this Ivory Tower.

Professor Stella Effah-Attoe is very much familiar with the giant strides recorded by Professor Zana Itiunbe Akpagu, the tenth and first Alumnus Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, especially in infrastructural development and curriculum restructuring and expansion. She will consolidate on them and also break new ground. Professor Stella Effah-Attoe is also very much aware of the numerous challenges facing the University; she has done her homework and consulted widely to tackle the challenges pragmatically, squarely and headlong. She will get results for the joy, hope and progress of all stakeholders of the University.

Professor Stella Effah-Attoe has taken many institutions to greater heights at both state and federal levels. Unical, under her watch, CANNOT be an exception!

The University of Calabar needs a mother, a bridge builder, a reconciler, a linker and binder, a peace maker, a succor provider to all, a mother to teaching and non-teaching staff, a mother of students and a mother of the University.

The choice of professor Stella Effah-Attoe as the 11th Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar will bless posterity and create a new order for excellence and ranking for our University, nationally and internationally.

God bless UNICAL, God bless staff and students of UNICAL and watch over UNICAL.

  • Tambuwal Consults Obasanjo, Mark, Danjuma over 2023 Presidency

Tambuwal Consults Obasanjo, Mark, Danjuma over 2023 Presidency

    Source: THISDAY

•Dogara: My defection to APC is to rebuild party, not for presidential ambition

Sokoto State Governor, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has begun consultations with some notable political leaders over his presidential aspiration on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

THISDAY gathered that the consultations started last Thursday when he met former Senate President, Senator David Mark, during which he discussed his ambition with him.

Tambuwal was to continue the consultation on Saturday with visits to a former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd).

The governor had met behind closed doors with Obasanjo for about an hour in his Presidential Library Pent House in Abeokuta.

A statement by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, had quoted the governor as saying he visited the former president to consult with him on issues concerning governance and others.

“You know Baba is our leader, statesman. And it is always good for us to come around to see how he is doing, pay homage and consult him on many issues of governance. That is why we have come this afternoon. And, we brought him the greetings and felicitations of the good people of Sokoto State,” the statement had quoted the governor, who was a leading contender for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election season, as saying.

However, THISDAY learnt yesterday that the main reason for the visit, which the former president’s aide described as unscheduled, was for Tambuwal to feel Obasanjo’s pulse on his presidential bid.

Sources told THISDAY that after the meeting with Obasanjo, Tambuwal headed for Lagos where he held talks with Danjuma in his residence.

He was said to have briefed the former minister on his decision to vie for the presidency in 2023.

The meeting was said to have lasted for over two hours before the governor departed for Sokoto.

Investigation also revealed that as part of the series of consultations, Tambuwal had on Thursday met with Mark in his Abuja residence.

However, PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has not officially announced the party’s zoning arrangement for 2023 presidential ticket, as THISDAY gathered that the main opposition party is said to be waiting for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to make a decision before announcing from which zone its candidate would come from.

When THISDAY contacted PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, for his comment on Tambuwal’s consultations, he said zoning was not yet on the agenda of PDP.

According to him, the party is concentrating on the governorship elections in Edo, Ondo and other by-elections slated for September and October, 2020.

But another party source, who spoke on Tambuwal’s consultations, told THISDAY: “In PDP, the manner of zoning is not clear, but the governor of Sokoto State, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, stands out clearly.

“He is the youngest in the race with a loaded credentials both in the executive and legislature arms of government. Moreover, he is a lawyer. That is the judicial arm.”

According to him, Tambuwal has solid credentials that makes him fit for the job.

The governor was Speaker of the House of Representatives for four years and is about to complete his two-term tenure of eight years as governor of Sokoto State, he said, adding that he is currently the deputy chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and also the chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum.

The source explained that Tambuwal also enjoys the support of PDP governors, who form a critical power bloc in the party.

“Take it or leave it, political pundits say that he is the aspirant to beat. He carries PDP governors along with him and the South-east is merely jostling for the vice presidential position,” the source said.

The source, however, added that from the body language of a former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he is also interested in contesting the 2023 presidential election.

But he said age might not be on his side as he would be 77 years by then, noting that the belief that the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari has been impaired by old age and health challenges may make Nigerians wary of entrusting another near septuagenarian with power in 2023.

A former aide of the late President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, had also told THISDAY that any opposition party must adopt a zoning system that would earn it votes if it is serious about winning the next presidential election.

Yakassai explained that the other political parties which are also operating a zoning principle must not tailor their zoning arrangement to suit that the ruling party.

“It does not mean that opposition party must align with the zoning arrangement of the other party. In other words, if one party produces a candidate from the North, the next one should produce from the South.

But zoning arrangement cannot prevent another party from producing candidate from the zone where the other party had produced a candidate that occupy that office at one time,” he stated.

Dogara: My Defection to APC is to Rebuild Party, Not for Presidential Ambition

Meanwhile, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who recently defected to APC, has said his ambition for now is on how to rebuild the ruling party and not becoming a vice presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election as being rumoured.

In a statement issued yesterday by his media aide, Mr. Turaki Hassan, Dogara said: “It has come to our notice that stories and images are being circulated on social media to the effect that Hon. Yakubu Dogara is running for the office of the vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the president in 2023.

“Our initial decision was to ignore them since they are utterly baseless but it appears that the promoters of this fallacy are unrelenting in spreading the falsehood and have now succeeded in making it sound believable to the extent that even some conventional and ‘credible’ media platforms are beginning to take it up.”

Dogara urged the public to disregard the story and pictures, which he described as the handiwork of mischief makers.

He accused Bauchi State Government of sponsoring the stories and pictures to give traction to their allegation that he left PDP just because he was deceived by APC with the promise of a position in 2023.

Dogara said: “2023 is still years away, therefore, it is unnecessary, distracting and insensitive to start making unfounded declarations at this time when all hands ought to be on deck in tackling the challenges of nationhood.”

The statement added that no political party sells nomination and expression of interest forms for the post of a running mate, as a running mate is only appointed or selected by a flag bearer.

Dogara said it was preposterous for anyone to claim that someone is running for the position of vice president when no flag bearer has emerged.

Sen. Sandy Onor Eulogizes Late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka, Expresses Sadness That He Passed On At A Time He Was Gaining Momentum In The Senate

    By Admin

The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Sen. Prof. Sandy Onor eulogized late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka whose remains was laid to rest at his family compound, Nkwot Ikot Umo, Ikono local government area of Akwa Ibom State on the 29th August, 2020.

The distinguished senator described Hero Umoh as a man that honor God during his first encounter with him at his Lagos residence, when he visited.

Onor expressed grieve that the late Hero Umoh didn’t stay to see what God has in store for them. He was however consoled that he and Ogar his brother were able to convince him (late Hero Umoh) that the decision they took to join politics, despite his indifferent was the best and he had to accept them and their politics before his death.

The senator however expressed sadness that the late Umoh passed on at a time when he was gaining momentum in the senate.

Find full text of his tribute at the funeral.

Tribute to Late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka – Senator Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor

“Brother Hero! I learnt to call you brother Hero through my friend, your brother, Ogar.

“It’s very painful for me to make this tribute, not because I do not know we would pass on, but honestly, I didn’t expect it would be this soon. And I’m very sure your family or none of us expected it would be this soon, but God knows best.

“Brother Hero! I got to know you before I met you. I got to know you through Ogar, my friend. He regaled me with stories about you: your simplicity, your viability, your being there for your friends and family sacrificially. Your house being haven for friends, family, for all and sundry. He told me about you being a great brother and a great man.

“I came to Lagos once when he was staying with you, and I saw all of these myself and I told my friend, you honour God.

“Many years after I had left the university and started doing politics and Ogar joined me in politics soon after he left the university and became councillor, he got stocked in politics with me.

“I remember that at some points, you didn’t believe that he took the right decision and you didn’t think that we meant well in all we said we did for our people. It took you a long time to believe us. But suddenly, we stocked to our guns, determined to prove to you and others that we meant well for our people and for all of us.

“Gradually, you started changing your mind and you accepted us and our politics and we are very happy for that.

“As God will have it, in spite of the vicissitudes we experienced in politics, the serial failures along the way, God uplifted us and gave us this opportunity to come to the Senate and represent our people.

“I was particularly happy because I had the opportunity to interact with you in Abuja. And a couple of times you came to me; we spoke about the present and the future, the dreams and hope for our people. The last time you visited, you spoke to me about meeting a minister for you, and I told you I wasn’t really a hustler and I didn’t like being seen in ministers’ offices. But for you and your person, I would do anything for you my big brother.

“About a week or two after that, you did something that as a family, we felt very excited about. You produced customised masks for me.  My wife was very excited when I told her, brother Hero produced some masks for us and she said, “that’s very nice of him. He’s beginning to accepting us the way we are”. Just yesterday, when I was already in the aircraft that it occurred to me, I forgot to bring those masks, to wear one in your honour and share the rest, but I would still do that.

“Brother Hero! When Ogar called me crying to say that you have passed on, I felt so sad. For me, it was like a dream broken and unfulfilled.

“Why would Brother Hero pass now when I was just beginning to gather momentum in the senate? Why couldn’t he see all of us and the great future that God has in store for us? But like I said earlier, God understands everything and so we leave it to Him.

“As we say in our past, you know you ‘re an EJAGHAM man matrilineally, and you know we as EJAGHAM people are matrilineal. That is why I would take you too seriously. Even if you were with us back home, you would be as important as anybody would be. And so, I would like to say to you, Brother Hero find rest in the bosom of Abraham till we meet to part no more”

Doctor Otu’s kidnap: Medical Women Association solicit help from Buhari, Minister of Women Affairs

    By George Odok Jr.

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria in Cross River has appealed to the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari and the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen to come to their aide in ensuring the immediate release of Dr Vivien Otu from captivity.

The Association also called on the Wife of the Governor of Cross River, Dr Linda Ayade, the Director General of Women Development Centre, Mrs Mary Ekpere Eta to also intervene.

The Association made the call on Sunday in Calabar in a release signed by its President and Secretary, Dr Bassey Nakanda and Dr Angella Imoke.

The release stated that the kidnapp of Dr Otu, a Senior Registrar in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health on Aug. 28, 2020 in Calabar, was condemnable.

The Association condemns in strong terms the nefarious act against her members, which they said has become a norm over the years.

They said in the release that Otu was the 16th doctor/dependents abducted within the last few years in Cross River, thereby expressing dissatisfaction that the real effect of kidnapping are not what any human should be subjected to.

“It is even worst when the victim is a woman and it affects the entire populace. Healthcare delivery is affected as all doctors feel threatened, discouraged and demoralised.

“As women and mothers, we hereby call on the state government, security agencies and relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in bringing to an end this incessant occurrence among medical doctors and other citizens of the state and to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Dr Otu.

“We also cry out to the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of Cross River Governor, Dr Linda Ayade, Minister of Women Affairs, Director General of Women Development Centre and others to rise up and defend womanhood by employing their positions to ensure speedy and unconditional release of Dr Otu.

“We are also calling on all Civil Society Organisations, especially the International Federation of Female Lawyers, the National Association of Women Journalists and Female Society Organisations to loud their voices to the cry for the release of Dr Otu,” the release stated.

The Medical Women also joined their voices with the Nigerian Medical Association in the state to demand for the accent to the anti-kidnapping bill which was passed by the Cross River House of Assembly, by the Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade.
