Jarigbe Dismisses Rift Rumours, Reaffirms Loyalty to Governor Otu

    By Elijah Ugani

Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, representing Cross River North Senatorial District, has dismissed attempts by some individuals to create discord between him and Governor Bassey Otu, describing such efforts as mischievous and politically motivated.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the senator accused certain actors of using pseudo media platforms to spread inflammatory comments aimed at pitching him against the governor.

According to Jarigbe, the same individuals had previously opposed his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate and are now seeking to exploit social media to create division within the party.

“I wish to address and admonish all those who are deliberately attempting to stoke discord between my humble self and the Executive Governor of Cross River State through pseudo media handles,” he said. “Their clear intention is to pitch His Excellency, my indefatigable leader, against me.”

The senator stressed that there was no basis for comparing the offices of governor and senator, noting that his constitutional responsibility is lawmaking and not rivalry with the executive arm of government.

“The Governor is my leader, and he is performing excellently in the discharge of his duties,” Jarigbe stated.

He highlighted several projects undertaken by the Otu administration, including the rehabilitation of the once-dilapidated Okuku–Okpoma road, which he said had claimed many lives in the past. He also praised the governor for funding the Bekwarra–Obudu road project and initiating the construction of a Governor’s Lodge in Ogoja.

However, the senator expressed concern over the slow pace of work on the Bekwarra–Obudu road, alleging that the indigenous contractor handling the project had failed to justify the substantial funds released by the state government.

He called for an investigation into the project and urged the government to consider revoking the contract if necessary to ensure the road is completed.

“Instead of engaging in distractions, we should be calling for the immediate revocation of that contract so that the Obudu Road can be fixed just like the Okpoma Road,” he said.

Jarigbe also took aim at some APC candidates who recently secured party tickets, urging them to focus on grassroots mobilization rather than engaging in political gossip and blackmail.

He advised the candidates to return to their constituencies and work towards securing electoral victories for themselves and the party.

“You did not win the ticket so that someone else would hand you victory. You must take responsibility and ensure the party wins,” he stated.

The senator concluded by calling on party members and stakeholders to remain focused on governance and development rather than political distractions.

“Let us focus on what truly matters: delivering good governance to the people of Cross River North and the entire state,” he said.

The governor is ready to employ staff in the four clinical areas. Even those who have retired and are still young and energetic and are willing to work, we will engage them on contract.

“Let me appreciate the Provost, very strong and very vibrant. She is phenomenal and a daughter of the soil. She is ready to step on any individual that is wants to sit on the progress of this institution.

“Matriculation is a beautiful day for all the celebrants. We are aware of the vices of the society. Some of them come here with pure minds and get corrupted. My advice is that they should come here and get the certification and leave and become better in the society. If you join the bad group, you will end your life and future.

The Governor has also approved and released critical funds for the accreditation and re-accreditation of our nursing and midwifery programs with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Because of this, our graduates are fully recognized, employable, and globally competitive”.

His Excellency did not just fund buildings. He gave us a system. By granting collegiate status, he elevated nursing education from a school-based model to a college-based academic structure. This strengthens governance, curriculum delivery, and career progression for staff and students.

“With the Governor’s backing, the State has deepened collaboration with the World Health Organization and other health-focused NGOs. These partnerships bring technical support, training, and equipment that directly benefit our colleges and, ultimately, our communities.

“Beyond capital projects, His Excellency ensured the regular payment of subvention to support academic programs, research, student welfare, and clinical postings. This consistent support is the lifeline that keeps the collegiate system functional and progressive.

“To our matriculating students: You are the first beneficiaries of this new era. To whom much is given, much is expected. Wear your caps with pride, but wear responsibility even more. The South South Zonal Director, National Board for Technical Education, Mr Cyril Mbong, noted that “This landmark event signifies not only the formal admission of the 2nd cohort of students but also the beginning of a promising journey towards excellence in nursing science education and healthcare service delivery. The migration of the then School of Nursing to a College is a commendable initiative that aligns with national efforts to strengthen human capacity in the health sector. The approval granted to commence HND programmes after a thorough resource inspection and approval visitation last year is a testament to the college’s commitment to quality education and institutional development.

“To the matriculating students, you carry the unique responsibility of maintaining the pace and standards for which this college is known. Your conduct, academic performance, and professional discipline will define the image and reputation of this college. I therefore urge you to remain focused, deligent, and commited to excellence at all times.

“I want to say that nobody came to this world for nothing, that whoever it is, was created by God for nothing. But each and everyone cannot be blessed at the same time. But the bridge between people achieving that purpose is how to manage, navigate to get to that date of promotion. So I celebrate people who are people oriented and are loved by the people. Distinguished Senator Jarigbe Agom, seems to be one. Who is so entwined with his people, which is a direct opposite of some people who carry on without a pulpit, which of course is a problem to society.

“55 years, he is still a young gentleman. I know that in my school days, when they say somebody is 50, I’ll say oooh that person is gone. But look at me here today, 55 is far behind me and I am still kicking and also very very strong.

“Senator Jarigbe Agom, I bring you many more felicitations from all of Cross River State, both home and abroad, to say that they are happy with you. They wish you the best, long life and prosperity. At some time, politically, Cross River State was divided. And the major opposition was distinguished Senator Jarigbe Agom, because of his people oriented policies. But today, Cross River State is one, because of their coming. They came from all nooks and crannies.

“When I came in here, I didn’t expect people to come all the way from the villages, particularly on a Tuesday like this, but I was surprised to come and see almost, from Councilors, House of Assembly members, Chairmen, the chairmen here you cannot count. Chairmen of local governments and their deputies, and other members who of course share his blessings with him. And you see all our governors here, that indicates something.

“So one of the reasons for finding time to come here is that, Cross River State is going forward and will never go back. Our achievements within this time are quite enormous. God has done very well in our State. We are breaking new grounds and making new endings. That is why we need everybody to come together to do the needful so that the difference will be glaring. We are taking it from where our forebears left it, we have added value in all ramifications and I can assure you that when you cascade, when you move down, you will see that you have people who are ready to take the mantle and continue to lead the State forward.

“Senator Jarigbe Agom, we wish you the very best in life. 55 is a giant age, but at 55, you have gained enough experience. In terms of maturity, you can take a decision in any sphere of life. At this stage, you are committed. We want to wish you the best. What the future holds, we don’t know, power belongs to God, but I know that there are better days to come.”

    HE Senator Prince Bassey Otu.
