“The governor approval for doctors is still open. If you have a brother that is a medical doctor and is open to work with the state government, let him come and we will employ him. The governor is ready to employ staff in the four clinical areas. Even those who have retired and are still young and energetic and are willing to work, we will engage them on contract.

“Let me appreciate the Provost, very strong and very vibrant. She is phenomenal and a daughter of the soil. She is ready to step on any individual that is wants to sit on the progress of this institution.

“When you go across the road, you see the land that the Provost negotiated with the community and got for the school. I will like the next Provost to continue from where she will stop. “Matriculation is a beautiful day for all the celebrants. We are aware of the vices of the society. Some of them come here with pure minds and get corrupted. My advice is that they should come here and get the certification and leave and become better in the society. If you join the bad group, you will end your life and future.

“To parents, please keep your eyes on your children and guide them appropriately. I congratulate you for this feet, as you have entered the college, the goal is to graduate with distinction. “Let me, on behalf of the nursing family, acknowledge His Excellency’s decisive role in transforming nursing education in our state. He has sustained and prioritized budgetary allocation to the Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Obudu, Calabar, Ogoja, and Itigidi. This has ensured stable operations, staff welfare, and improved learning conditions across board.”

Under his administration, this college has witnessed tangible growth. New lecture halls, demonstration rooms, e-libraries, and hostel facilities are testaments to a government that believes infrastructure must match our ambition for world-class nurses”.

The Governor has also approved and released critical funds for the accreditation and re-accreditation of our nursing and midwifery programs with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. Because of this, our graduates are fully recognized, employable, and globally competitive”.

His Excellency did not just fund buildings. He gave us a system. By granting collegiate status, he elevated nursing education from a school-based model to a college-based academic structure. This strengthens governance, curriculum delivery, and career progression for staff and students.

“With the Governor’s backing, the State has deepened collaboration with the World Health Organization and other health-focused NGOs. These partnerships bring technical support, training, and equipment that directly benefit our colleges and, ultimately, our communities.

“Beyond capital projects, His Excellency ensured the regular payment of subvention to support academic programs, research, student welfare, and clinical postings. This consistent support is the lifeline that keeps the collegiate system functional and progressive.

“To our matriculating students: You are the first beneficiaries of this new era. To whom much is given, much is expected. Wear your caps with pride, but wear responsibility even more. Cross River State is investing in you because we believe you will give back through excellence and empathy at the bedside.

He has made this environment conducive for learning. A few years, we were yearning to have this school. Years ago, he approved this college to be among the colleges in the state. The students gathered here are not just from cross River State, you have them from other states and the Cameroon. It means that Obudu is central in the world.

“We thank the commissioner for health for all the sacrifices. To the Provost, you deserve a special award from Obudu for your sacrifices and proactivines. We pray God to guide you. In the near future, we will train even masters degrees.

“To the students, many of you gather here, a few years from now, you should be in abroad. I can see many of you America, Japan. You are the future and safety of our wives and children, do well to make us proud”.

The South South Zonal Director, National Board for Technical Education, Mr Cyril Mbong, noted that “This landmark event signifies not only the formal admission of the 2nd cohort of students but also the beginning of a promising journey towards excellence in nursing science education and healthcare service delivery. The migration of the then School of Nursing to a College is a commendable initiative that aligns with national efforts to strengthen human capacity in the health sector. The approval granted to commence HND programmes after a thorough resource inspection and approval visitation last year is a testament to the college’s commitment to quality education and institutional development.

“To the matriculating students, you carry the unique responsibility of maintaining the pace and standards for which this college is known. Your conduct, academic performance, and professional discipline will define the image and reputation of this college. I therefore urge you to remain focused, deligent, and commited to excellence at all times.

“Beyond academic knowledge, your attitude to care, empathy for patients, and adherence to professional ethics will distinguished you in the field. I commend the management and staff for their foresight, resilience, and dedication in bringing this vision to reality. Your commitment to maintain high standards in training and character development of your students is highly appreciated and worthy of emulation”.

He reiterated the ban on the operation of satellite campuses, study and outreach centres, and affiliations has not been lifted by the federal government yet, and appealed to the state government to allow the state colleges of nursing sciences that have received approval to commence HND programmes just last year to mature and to graduate some batches of HND students before initiating the idea of affiliation.

Mbong listed the implications of illegal affiliation to include: Lost of already obtained National Diploma (ND) accreditation, stoppage of Higher National Diploma (HND) approval to commence, and delisting of the programmes and Institutions from JAMB portal.

Highlights of the event was the administering of matriculation oath, capping of the students and presentation of awards to deserving principal officers of the college.

Excerpts From Governor Bassey Otu’s Remarks at Senator Jarigbe Agom’s 55th Birthday event at Hilton Hotel in Abuja

    Compiled By Agba Jalingo

“I want to say that nobody came to this world for nothing, that whoever it is, was created by God for nothing. But each and everyone cannot be blessed at the same time. But the bridge between people achieving that purpose is how to manage, navigate to get to that date of promotion. So I celebrate people who are people oriented and are loved by the people. Distinguished Senator Jarigbe Agom, seems to be one. Who is so entwined with his people, which is a direct opposite of some people who carry on without a pulpit, which of course is a problem to society.

“55 years, he is still a young gentleman. I know that in my school days, when they say somebody is 50, I’ll say oooh that person is gone. But look at me here today, 55 is far behind me and I am still kicking and also very very strong.

“Senator Jarigbe Agom, I bring you many more felicitations from all of Cross River State, both home and abroad, to say that they are happy with you. They wish you the best, long life and prosperity. At some time, politically, Cross River State was divided. And the major opposition was distinguished Senator Jarigbe Agom, because of his people oriented policies. But today, Cross River State is one, because of their coming. They came from all nooks and crannies.

“When I came in here, I didn’t expect people to come all the way from the villages, particularly on a Tuesday like this, but I was surprised to come and see almost, from Councilors, House of Assembly members, Chairmen, the chairmen here you cannot count. Chairmen of local governments and their deputies, and other members who of course share his blessings with him. And you see all our governors here, that indicates something.

“So one of the reasons for finding time to come here is that, Cross River State is going forward and will never go back. Our achievements within this time are quite enormous. God has done very well in our State. We are breaking new grounds and making new endings. That is why we need everybody to come together to do the needful so that the difference will be glaring. We are taking it from where our forebears left it, we have added value in all ramifications and I can assure you that when you cascade, when you move down, you will see that you have people who are ready to take the mantle and continue to lead the State forward.

“Senator Jarigbe Agom, we wish you the very best in life. 55 is a giant age, but at 55, you have gained enough experience. In terms of maturity, you can take a decision in any sphere of life. At this stage, you are committed. We want to wish you the best. What the future holds, we don’t know, power belongs to God, but I know that there are better days to come.”

    HE Senator Prince Bassey Otu.

I approached my Chairman and made a plea and my Chairman graciously considered my request even when there was no budgetary provision, this project came under emergency provision and I assure you that it will be completed to specification.

  • Governor Otu’s Administration’ll Continue to Prioritize the People’s Welfare, Odey Assures

…as Obudu Council Chairman lauds Gov. Otu for progress on Obudu Airport.

The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon Peter Odey, has assured citizens that the administration of Governor Bassey Otu remains fully committed to placing the welfare of the people at the heart of governance in line with the ‘People First’ mantra

Odey gave this assurance during a stakeholders’ engagement session in Obudu Local Government Area on Sunday, as part of his ongoing Northern Senatorial District tour. He emphasized that every policy, project, and program under the Otu-led administration is designed to uplift lives across both urban centers and the most rural communities in the state.

He emphasized that despite economic challenges and inadequate allocations due to the state’s exclusion from the 13% derivation benefits as a littoral state, the government has consistently ensured the progression of the Obudu Cargo and Passenger Airport project. Additionally, investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure, efforts to enhance agricultural productivity, support for local economies, and ongoing rehabilitation of rural roads under the RAMP initiative have been prioritized, with Cross River State fulfilling its obligations by providing the counterpart funding.

Addressing concerns raised by stakeholders, including women, youth, and traditional rulers regarding road infrastructure, youth unemployment, and border security, Odey assured the populace, particularly in the Northern Senatorial district, that Governor Otu’s administration will remain accountable and responsive to their concerns. The administration will continue to engage with relevant authorities and partners to improve the socioeconomic status of its people.

He commended the Obudu community for their pivotal role in supporting the current administration and encouraged them to maintain their support for a government that has their best interests at heart now and in the future.

Earlier in his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Obudu Local Government Area, Hon. (Amb.) Peter Akonfe Undiandeye, KSM, praised Governor Otu for the significant progress made at the Obudu Cargo and Passenger Airport, the government’s efforts in resolving long-standing boundary disputes with neighboring Benue State and other areas, and other infrastructural projects undertaken by the Governor Otu-led administration.

He commended Rt. Hon. Peter Odey for initiating the senatorial tour, which coincides with the New Yam Festival celebrated across the LGAs in the North, highlighting several pressing concerns about the poor state of the Bekwarra-Obudu, Utugwang-Mbube East Road, rising youth unemployment, and persistent insecurity stemming from unresolved boundary disputes between Obudu and Vandeikya in Benue State

In separate remarks, Member representing Obanliku/Bekwarra/Obudu in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Sylvester Agabi, Chairman of Utukalu, PJ Ekunke, Community Leader Chief Dr. Tony Undiandeye, the Paramount Ruler of Obudu, as well as Women and youth representatives among others, expressed satisfaction with the inclusive and people-oriented leadership style of Governor Otu.

Furthermore, they also praised Rt. Hon. Peter Odey for his hands-on approach to governance and for bringing the government closer to the grassroots through the ongoing senatorial tour. They described engagement as a strategic and inclusive model that fosters direct communication between the government and the people.

The high point of the event was the donation of N30 million by the Deputy Governor, part of which was in support of the upcoming New Yam Festival scheduled for September 6, and a portion designated for women farmers to acquire agricultural inputs and boost local food production.

  • Gov Otu Condemns Brutality, Orders arrest of Police Personnel Over death of 23-Year-old man

The Cross River State Government has strongly condemned what it described as a “brazen act of lawlessness and abuse of authority” following the tragic death of 23-year-old Onyekachi Moses in Calabar.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Erasmus Ekpang, the government lamented that the young man, who sustained grievous injuries allegedly from the reckless actions of a police officer, died after several days of battling for his life in hospital. Governor Otu, the statement disclosed, has directed the immediate arrest and investigation of the officer involved.

“His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has mandated the Commissioner of Police to effect the immediate arrest of the implicated officer and ensure a thorough investigation into this grievous misconduct,” the statement read. “Impunity has no sanctuary under this administration.”

The government described the incident as a violation not only of human dignity but also of the core principles of justice and security that form the bedrock of civil order. “Those entrusted with protecting lives cannot become purveyors of fear and tragedy,” the release stressed.

Governor Otu, according to the statement, warned that any officer who betrays the sacred duty of protection and public trust would face the full weight of the law. “Let it be known unequivocally: this government will not shield any agent of the state who undermines justice,” he affirmed.

To the bereaved family, the government extended deep condolences, assuring them of justice. “Our hearts are with the family of late Onyekachi in this painful hour. The Cross River State Government stands firmly with you and assures that justice will not be delayed nor denied,” the statement conveyed.

The release further called on citizens to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that the government is determined to pursue accountability with transparency. “We urge our people to remain peaceful and confident in our collective resolve to seek truth and enforce justice,” it added.

It pledged that the administration would not rest until the memory of the deceased was honoured with firm and transparent accountability. “This government shall not relent until the assurance is clear that such impunity will never again be tolerated on our soil,” the statement declared.

Governor reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the sanctity of life, the rule of law, and the people-first philosophy that underpins his administration.
