    Federal Polytechnic, Ugep: The True Story BY OKOI OBONO-OBLA

     

    It all started on the 24 September 2020 when I stumbled on a letter dated 17 December 2019 written by the Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Education to the Executive Secretary Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETfund, conveying the approval of President Buhari for the establishment of new Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education in the country to address the emergency in the education sector in Nigeria. I was excited when I saw that one of the Federal Polytechnics approved for Cross River State without a location tied to it. I immediately called the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr to alert.

    I beseeched His Royal Majesty to write a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari appealing to him to site the Federal Polytechnic Cross River State in Ugep. Obol Lopon didn’t hesitate. He accepted my advice and wrote the letter dated 24 September 2020 to Mr. President through Hon. Minister of Education Malam Adamu Adamu, which he sent to him for delivery in Abuja.

    In the letter, Obol Lopon reminded Mr. President of his request on the 26 October 2018 when he paid a courtesy visit to him in my company. Obol Lopon had requested that Mr. President approved the establishment of a Federal University of Science and Technology in Ugep. On the 20 January 2021, I got a call from Malam Adamu Adamu at about 9 pm. He asked me pointedly why the Polytechnic should be in Ugep. I told him that Ugep is an APC stronghold.

    In the 2019 presidential election, Ugep voted massively for Mr. President. Abi/Yakurr Federal constituency produced the only APC member in the House of Representatives from the Cross River State, Dr. Alex Egbona. Lastly, I told him where federal educational institutions in Cross River State are.

    The Federal educational institutions in Cross River State, Nigeria, include the University of Calabar, Calabar, Federal College of Education, Obudu, Federal Government College, Ikom, Federal Science College, Ogoja and Federal Government Girls College, Calabar. Ugep has no federal government educational institution.

    Ugep has a population of 202,000. It is the largest town in Cross River after Calabar. It is the headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State. President Buhari is a sincere and fair-minded leader.

    I vividly remembered President Buhari’s reply to the request of Obol Lopon on 26 October 2018 that during his time as President, he will ensure that every part of Nigeria benefits from federal government presence.

    President Buhari is a sincere, genuine, and fair-minded leader. Sincerely this is the reason why I believe in him as a person and a leader. He has lavished appointments on Cross River indigenes.

    I also thank the Honourable Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, for his large-heartedness, friendship, and sincerity. He is humble, open-minded, honest, and a true leader.

    General Władysław Franciszek Jabłonowski: Polish General of African Descent-
    It is known that a lot of people of African ancestry played prominent roles and indeed contributed to the development of European countries in variegated ways.

    One such personage was Brigadier General Wladyslaw Franciszek Jablonowski (25 October 1769-29 September 1802).

    His origin was shrouded.
    He was the child of Maria Dralise, an English aristocrat and a known African man.

    However, he was adopted by a Polish Nobleman, Konstenty Jablonowski who gave him his family name.
    He attended a military academy and was commissioned as an officer in the Polish Army.

    In 1799 he was made General of the Brigade of the Polish legions.
    He fought in the Napoleonic wars.

    He fought along the French Legionaries in Haiti deployed to fight enslaved Africans who were revolting against French oppression, enslavement, and colonialism.

    General Jabolowski died on 29 September 1809 of dengue fever.

    I was born in Jos, Northern Nigeria (now) Plateau State on 30 October several years in a politically turbulent year when the country was teetering on the brink of a civil war disintegration.

    I was born a twin but my twin sister couldn’t make it past our 10th birthday anniversary.
    I have miraculously survived to celebrate my birthday on the 30 October 2023.
    I give thanks and glory to the almighty God.

    I recall he pointedly asked me where I wanted to serve, whether in the Federal or State. He was that gracious. For me the gesture of offering to assist is uncommon. Usually, a friend in power as they say is a friend lost. Chief OOO Obla was accessible and helpful.

    On the occasion of his birthday a few years ago….by the way it is his birthday today…more reasons we should be in solidarity with him.

    Still on that Obono Oblas birthday party. He was overwhelmed by friends. His lovely wife noticed I couldn’t get his attention. She walked into a group that had been holding his attention. She excused them politely, asked to see her husband privately, and brought him to the table where I was sitting alone.

    I complimented Obono Obla on the safari-styled attire he was wearing, looking a shade like Chairman Mao. He asked if I liked it. I honestly said of course. He waved at a gentleman in the crowd. The fresh-faced young man came to our table. He asked the man if he knew me. We both looked at ourselves. No recollection. He told the young man that’s Manni Ochugboju your brother from Idoma land. Now, go take his dress measurements and make two beautiful outfits like the one I am wearing for him. Waaaoo. On his birthday, he was giving me a gift instead of the other way around.

    To keep my solidarity salute with Chief OOO Obla brief, I will mention one last professional and nationalistic support he rendered me.

    I have been struggling with aspects of the Late Chief Anthony Enahoros’s brief for over a decade. Obono Obla suggested we work on the post-humous Amnesty or Presidential Pardon for him. Well, some of the issues are in the public domain so no breach of client confidentiality here. Obono Obla guided us diligently and appropriately. And, to the Glory of God, President Buhari declared amnesty or Presidential Pardon for Chief Anthony Enahoro.

    WHY OBONO OBLA AND THE APC HIERARCHY ARE AFRAID OF THE MILITARY

    Chief Obono Obla has been on overdrive since last week’s polls throwing tantrums like a baby in need of its feeding bottle. In doing so he has told dozens of lies against the PDP and the Nigerian military and is generally confirming what we already knew that the APC is scared of the coming governorship and House of Assembly polls because of its tattered performance in the two tenures of its misrule at all levels.

    Obla would like the general public to believe the ruse that it was not the government at various levels that deployed the military to give security cover on election day as has been the tradition over the years. In his wild goose chase he seems to be suggesting that a private citizen or some set of private citizens actually brought out the military on election duty nationwide.

    To remind Obono Obla, who has really not been able to return to normalcy ever since he was disgraced out of office at the federal level with accompanying embarrassing legal suits that tended to have reduced his claims to intellectual and legal high ground, no one outside the Commander In Chief of the federal republic and his military generals can move the military around the country.

    Obono Obla should recall that President Buhari, the leader of the APC and the country made an announcement just before the elections ordering the military to shoot at sight people who steal election materials or try to intimidate voters. If members of his party fell foul of this order and were duely arrested or disciplined, Obla should not go about in search of scapegoats because he will not find any.

    What Obla has inadvertently laid bare is his frustration at the capacity of the Nigerian military to deny his party members the opportunity to use cult groups, bandits and cutthroats to intimidate voters and steal electoral materials to formulate criminal and unverifiable victory. Even when a fine gentleman and level headed media man and politician in his party, Ritchie Romanus gently cautioned him against his wild scaremongering, Obla employed hack writers to insult him in a voluminous poorly written response.

    The Nigerian military is not a party in this election nor does it have a dog in the fight. Imagine what would have happened in Ugep and several other areas if military personnel were not on election duty with highly respected individuals resorting to brute force in order to win by any means necessary, even if several people were killed in the process. The military high command is advised to ignore and disregard the vituperations of Obono Obla as mere sound and fury without substance. The military will surely return on election duty on March 11, and there is nothing Obono Obla and his like can do about that.

    The former Presidential Aide to Muhammadu Buhari, Chief Obono-Obla has called on Governor Ben Ayade to invoke the power vested on him by the Cross River State Local Government Law to direct the suspension from of office the Chairmen of Obubra and Yakurr local government councils following the renewed communual crisis between Oyadama in Obubra local government, and Nko in Yakurr local government area.

    Obono-Obla took to his verified Facebook page to make the call “I call on the Governor of Cross River State to immediately invoke the power vested in him by the Cross River State Local government Law to direct the suspension from office of the Chairmen of Obubra and Yakurr local government councils.

    This call has become imperative following the breakdown of law and order arising from the inter-communal violence that has wreaked part of Obubra and Yakurr local government areas of Cross River State.

    The violence in these two communities has led to deaths and wanton destruction of property.
    Nko has been under unrelenting attacks from soldiers posted there to maintain the peace.
    Indeed Nko has been completely deserted and turned into a ghost town, and the population is internally displaced.

    I urge the Governor of the Cross River State Law to invoke section 11 of the Cross River State Local government Law and direct the suspension of these chairmen.
    The law empowers the Governor to direct the suspensions of the Chairman of a local government council that suffers a breakdown of law and order.

    Indeed there has been such a breakdown of law and order in Onyedama (Obubra local government area ) and Nko(Yakurr local government area )for the past week.

    “The suspension will send a clear and firm signal to the Chairmen of local government councils in the State to sit down and work and stem inter-communal violence that is a recurring decimal in some parts of the State.”

    The cross-river state leadership of the APC is in shambles.
    The leadership is grossly biased and discriminatory against members of the legacy parties in the APC in the State (defunct CPC, ACN, and ANPP that amalgamated in 2013 to form APC).

    The agenda of the leadership is to perpetuate the interest and hegemony of defectors from the PDP that joined the APC in 2021.

    This trend manifested clearly in the manner the leadership manipulated primaries for the nomination of candidates to fly the party flag in the next general election.
    During the compilation of the names of delegates, the leadership ensure that only those that joined the party in 2021 were selected.

    The selection of delegates constitutes an abuse of the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022; which stipulates that delegates shall be democratically elected.
    The leadership continued to tinker with the list of delegates to the extent that aspirants (other than the ones from the 2021 defectors) knew the electors even right to the day of the primaries.

    The APC in Cross River is presently rudderless and purposeless.

    How does the leadership except for the unity of purpose, direction, discipline, and cohesion that a political party going into an election is required to have even show manifest bias against a tendency within its rank and file?

    I see a heavy defeat staring at the party in the next general election unless something drastic is done to heal the wounds inflicted on party stakeholders, leaders, and members alike.

    A frontline senatorial aspirant of the All Progressive Congress APC, and founding member who served as Secretary of the merger committee of the party, Chief Okoi Obono Obla Esq, has stated that the APC in Cross River State is fractured beyond redemption due to the imposition of candidates during the selection process.

    Chief Obla reacted to the just concluded APC primaries election held at Ikom Local Government Area, the central senatorial headquarters, on his Facebook page.

    The statement in full “The APC Senatorial Congress for the nomination of the candidate of the Central senatorial district of Cross River State held in Ikom on 28 May 2022, was a charade.

    T”election was marred by voting buying perpetuated by desperate aspirants in front of security agents.

    It was not surprising that altered and doctored delegate lists by the powers that be to support the “anointed aspirant“.
    Some of us know before voting that the election would be a sham.

    “The potentate makes sure that you must have his endorsement before you can aspire to become a candidate.

    The powers that be were at a crossroads on what to do with me and therefore devised crude and inferior methods to edge me out.
    The APC has completed deviated from the philosophy of its founding fathers.
