56th Birthday Anniversary: Joe Obi Bisong Goes To Church, Holds Public Lecture

    By Elijah Ugani

As part of the activities to mark his 56th birth anniversary, the Director General of the Caterpillar Movement birthed by Sen Prof Sandy Onor, Chief Joe Obi Bisong returned to God in thanksgiving and held a public lecture to ex ray successive leadership in Cross River State.

The thanksgiving mass was held at the oldest parish in Ogoja Catholic diocese, St Patrick’s parish Kakwagom, on Thursday, August 19th 2021 and presided by Rev Fr Richard Otu Agbor.

The homilist, Rev Fr (Sub-Lieutenant) Simon Bisong, stated that friends and well wishers are gathered here to thank God for granting the celebrant 56 years of good health.

Referring to the celebrant, the priest stated that “there are so many times you have escaped assassination. During this 56 years of your eventful life, you have created so much impact within our community.
There are so many people who have made so much efforts, but they have not made any impact.
We are here to thank God and ask him to keep you to attain the biblical years and even beyond.

“In this life, you have met a lots of people, some who will come into your life briefly and go away.
They are some who have been with you from the beginning to the end. On a day like this, you need to appreciate those who have impacted on you positively or negatively.

“A day where you need to rewrite the agenda of your life. In rewriting your agenda, I wish you to consider these three things.

“First, Work on your relationship between you and your family members. When you speak, everyone including your family members listen to you.
Who will take after you, who will take over from you. Build an empire where your family members will take after you.

“Secondly, build your relationship with those who are working with you. A good leader is the one who want his followers to grow more than him. And that is what we know you for. All you need is to consolidate.

“The last thing is that you need to consolidate your relationship with God. You have to work on your relationship with God. I know you believe in God, maybe along the way, something happened and you backsides, this is the time for you to put God first on your agenda”

On his part, the Priest In-Charge of St Patrick parish, Kakwagom, Rev Fr Victormario Otu, described Chief Joe Obi Bisong as a trailblazing community builder and pathfinder whose echoes of goodwill permeates the entire Kakwagom nation and even beyond. He held that for Chief Joe Obi Bisong to have come to thank God for the gift of life further affirms his love for God.

The parish priest used the opportunity to invite friends and well wishers of Chief Joe Obi Bisong to the centenary celebration of the parish next year.

Eulogizing the DG, Caterpillar Movement during thanksgiving mass, Sen Prof Sandy Onor hinted that “Joe has limitations just as myself, but Joe is a profoundly good man. Very few are better than him, in terms of quality, honesty, commitment and knowledge of the politics.

“When I am not around and I ask Joe to go and represent me, most of the times, people wonder whether it is me or not, you know we look almost the same. I am thankful to God for this community to have a son like Joe.

“When people send you and you passionately commit all that you have to them, God will bless you abundantly, I have experienced this myself, it is too late for me to go back. All the monies available to me for constituency projects, I showed Joe everything, we give back to the people. We will continue to serve our people to the best of our ability.

“In politics, once you have people who give you bad advice, that is the beginning of your fall. On the other hand, when you are lucky and bless to have people who give you good advice, then you will do very well. I am bless and lucky to have Chief Joe Obi Bisong as my DG.

“Many people have had cause to say even to me whether Joe own DG is different and whether election has not finished and I say to them that election has not finished. Joe, as long as we have tasks, he will continue to direct us generally.

“If you want me to be happy with you, speak good of Joe, and if you don’t want me to be happy with you, then speak ill of Joe”

Reacting to the lecture, Sen. Onor berated leadership approach in the state and averred that “Yesterday we were very proud of Cross River State, today we’re ashamed of our state. People must speak the truth; this is no time for elegance. Our state is drifting. Our people are suffering. Our values and morals have been eroded. Young people are taught rubbish. Our local governments have to be resuscitated. Our councilors would have meaning. Our chiefs have to be respected. Cultism has to be given the back seat. There must be value for money. Cross River has to get back to where it used to be. We may not have money, but we have values as a people. People left their places with their wealth and all to come and rest in Cross River State because of our hygiene and propriety, we will get back there”.

Presenting the lecture, Mr Ken Egbas, hinted that Cross River State has no development plan as compared to Lagos state that developed a 50 years development plan during the Amed Bola Tinubu reign as Governor. He lamented and argued that Cross River State does not deserve to belong at the bottom of the ladder of every index for measuring human and economic development in the comity of states in Nigeria. Statistics presented by Egbas, indicates that recently, Cross River State ranks the least out of the lowest 5 states on capital expenditure of a budget of about 1.4trillion naira. The five (5) states are: Taraba, Ogun, Imo, Benue and Cross River. In the same report ranking, physical discipline in state budgets, Cross River ranked 35th, only marginally above Borno State. Borno being the capital of insurgence in the North East would have contributed to Borno occupying that position, but what would be the excuse for Cross River? Egbas held that the answer is lack of leadership! He again stated that “given the precarious situation we find ourselves as a state, a ‘Messiah’ would be needed come 2023 to salvage the state from its current state of decay”

  • Sandy Onor: A Tireless Champion Of The Oppressed BY ORI OWAN

Sandy Onor: A Tireless Champion Of The Oppressed BY ORI OWAN

A radical scholar posits that “when political elite become insensitive to the conventional forms of expression of public opinion, they make alternative expressions inevitable.” And for Edward Burke, “those who will say nothing in the face of tyranny must endure the rule of idiots.” In fact, all it takes for a nation to stagnate, retrogress or decay, is for its good people to keep quiet.

Writing about Distinguished Senator Professor Sandy Onor brings to mind the immutable words of Nelson Mandela: “When the water starts boiling, it is foolishness to turn off the heat.” The recent turn of events in Cross River State, coupled with the attendant consolidation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), no doubt exhume the glaring truth that Senator Onor is a leading voice and champion of the oppressed and the downtrodden. Today, he stands out like a colossus. In words and deeds, he has demonstrated uncommon resilience and courage. To borrow the postulation of John Maxwell “everything rises and falls on leadership.” Consequently, a celebrated leader is invariably a hero, a voice of the voiceless, a champion of the oppressed, a dependable pillar, the hope of the common man, and the source of inspiration to the apparently frustrated and abandoned masses. In truth and spirit, that leader must be courageous and ready to make sacrifices for the survival of his people. That leader to say the least, must be ready to stand firm, call a spade, a spade, with sustained defense mechanism to protect and jealously guide against the maltreatment of his people.

That leader like the biblical Moses is a pathfinder, a trailblazer, a shining light, who has the pragmatic ability to fix an already battered system.

That tireless champion being referred to here, is a simple man, but no nonsense in disposition. He exudes the aura and charisma of a revolutionary, willing at all times to pull down obstacles and make way for the common people to live. That man, is the Ejagham-born proud son of the Central Cross River State, Senator Professor Sandy Irunandu Ojang Onor. Clearly, Senator Onor personifies the above mentioned elements and values of a true leader and champion of the oppressed. This is because his past two years in office, exemplifies beyond measure, that leadership is not about a title or about a designation. It is about work, impact, influence, and inspiration.”

Though, an incurably blind person may argue differently against his performance, it won’t change the general opinion about this astute legislator. More so, for a cynic whose level of cynicism has assumed the state of serious psychological disorder, he or she may blindly argue against empirical truth in the Central Cross River, by virtue of the tireless efforts of the people’s Senator. In the same vein, it is only a sponsored constituent, with a default mindset that will attempt to undermine Senator Onor’s achievements in the past two years.

When a performer overwhelmingly performs, the constituents should applaud, rather than vilify him, and remain prayerful to God for the blessings of good leadership. On the contrary, a society that has leadership crisis is likely to experience conflicting and dissenting opinions, especially from radical minds and citizens, who are apparently dissatisfied with the poor state of events.

The current Cross River State is a living example of a state that is maladministered, making it extremely difficult to distinguish between politics and criminality; where the economy is heading towards the intensive care unit (ICU), and poverty weaponized, in spite of what the state parades in terms of natural endowments; where the state library complex is in shambles, in spite of having two professors on the saddle; where the majority of the citizens are weeping and groaning helplessly against the evil deeds of the present leadership in Cross River. Interestingly, as a radical voice, Senator Sandy Onor would not rest on his oars, until we have a better Cross River State of his dream. This is because “all it takes for a society to decay, is for the good people there to keep quiet.” Thus, with his mesianic expeditions, coupled with his intimidating profile, prudence and probity, the time to invite Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor, with a view to redeeming Cross River State in 2023, is now.

Excerpts From Sen. Sandy Onor’s Speech At The PDP Stakeholders Meeting Held In Transcorp Hotels, Calabar

    By Modlin Odu

“Your Excellency (Sen. Liyel Imoke), Colleagues, very senior Citizens, Party Chieftains and Democratic soldiers who are veterans of many political wars. I salute all of you. From Abuja, my analysis was very clear as to the fact that there is no shaking at all.

“Across the State, we have heard reports of the resistance of those who are good people on ground, refusing to be cajoled by the evils of stomach infrastructure. Even Jesus Christ Himself said it when the devil came to tempt him in the wilderness that, “Man shall not live by bread alone”.

“You cannot come and compromise the values that all of our leaders have put together for this State. You made our State dirty, compromised all that we represent, destroyed our infrastructure and just reduced us to symbols of food on the table. Any man who does not understand that his destiny is bigger than mere food, that is, poisoned food that does not avail you the liberty to think and the capacity to invest and grow is clearly intended to make you a slave. No more,no less.

“We cannot afford to have leaders who deceive us. This movement to APC is completely personal and thoroughly selfish. Now, if you’re afraid of EFCC, you jump from PDP to APC and have your sins washed away. That is clearly the calculation and the entire nation understands it.

“The other day somebody was on T.V saying that anybody who dares him will come face to face with the arrogance of power at the centre. How can a leader speak like that? Arrogance of which power? When Power is transient. When that power will soon evaporate. When the power was given to you by the people. When it was given to you by the PDP and you turn back 24hours after defection to seize our secretariat. That is a most irresponsible act.

“Let me assure all of you that even the few that are pretending to go with him shall return to their umbrella. The party belongs to the people and they shall fundamentally hold the key to the future of the party.

“This is a democratic party and we have resolved that all the democratic processes must be followed from Wards to Chapters and to all other levels. Nobody will be denigrated or set aside.”

Ogoja Diocese Centenary Celebration: Sen. Sandy Onor Receives Papal Recognition

    By Caterpillar Media Team

The Holy Father and Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis 1, has specially recognized distinguished Senator Sandy Onor on the occasion of the Centenary celebration of the Catholic Church in Ogoja Diocese on Friday, 14th May 2021 at St. Benedict’s Cathedral for his selfless, passionate, tremendous contributions and humble devotion to the growth of the Roman Catholic Church in the diocese.

The Award was conveyed to the Bishop of Ogoja Diocese, His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Donatus E. Akpan by the Papal Nuncio to Nigeria, His Excellency, Arch Bishop Antonio Guido Fillipazzi and was presented to the senator by the Catholic Bishop of Gboko Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. William Avenya.

The Papal award is the highest category of awards presented during the centenary celebration and the lawmaker was considered for this award after a careful review of his antecedence.

Reacting to the award while filing questions from journalists, the elated and cerebral Sen. Sandy Onor averred that “we take this award very seriously as an honor from the priests who are representatives of God and as an honor from God.

“The consequence therefore is that we are expected by the Church to do more whatever we are doing to get the recognition of the Church. The recognition shows that we are on the part to gaining salvation or else, at the end of the day, all is vanity”

Sen. In a goodwill message sighted by TheLumineNews, Sen. Onor commended Muslims faithfuls for a successful conclusion of this year’s Ramadan on a good note despite the current security challenges facing the nation.

The message reads in parts “lt’s rewarding to commend our Muslims brothers and sisters for their adherence to the holy scripture through dedicated fasting, charitable sacrifices and steadfastness in the midst of subversive actions and intentions intended to create a weak and vulnerable system in our polity by rabble-rousing elements.”

The lawmaker further held that: “When we uphold and practice the teachings of our holy books, love, peace and tolerance would reign amongst us. And as the Holy Month of Ramadan offered us a fresh opportunity to deepen and strengthen our relationship with Allah, it’s also an opportunity for us to promote love, tolerance and peaceful coexistence amongst ourselves. On behalf of my family and the good people of Cross River Central Senatorial District, I wish you Allah’s continuous guidance and protection, Amen.”

  • Caterpillar Movement Reacts To Francis Etang’s Article: Cross River State Power Rotation, Whither Prof. Sandy Onor Ambition From Central

Caterpillar Movement Reacts To Francis Etang’s Article: Cross River State Power Rotation, Whither Prof. Sandy Onor Ambition From Central

The attention of the Caterpillar Movement has been drawn to an article captioned “CROSS RIVER STATE POWER ROTATION, WHITHER PROF SANDY ONOR AMBITION FROM CENTRAL” circulating on the social media purportedly authored by one Mr Francis Etang for himself and assumed principals.

Ordinarily the Caterpillar Movement would have chosen to ignore the baseless and unfounded allegations whose sole purpose is to smear the name and integrity of our principal, Distinguished Senator Prof. Sandy Onor, the incumbent Senator representing the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State. But we decided to respond for the sake of posterity and history; More so to save the discerning public from the pernicious diatribes inherent in the hallucinatory article of an ill informed person.

The said article is expressly malicious, frivolous, tenuous and laden with tissues of distorted facts, half truths, spurious and unsubstantiated claims against the person of the Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor.
It is noteworthy to state unequivocally that the said article is pedestrian and infantile and falls within the limited knowledge and imagination of the author whose sole purpose is to hoodwink the discerning public, discredit the imprimatur of the Caterpillar Movement and cause unnecessary anxiety in the politics of our dear state.

In view of the aforesaid, we wish to address some of the jaundiced issues raised in the write up.

    1. Admittedly, the said Francis Etang confirmed that the Ejagham Speaking Nation in Cross River State are the largest group spread across the three Senatorial Districts; Unfortunately the same person accused Distinguished Senator Prof Sandy Onor of whipping the Ejagham sentiment for Governorship in many fora. Assuming without conceding that the above claim from Mr Etang is true, what is wrong with an Ejagham Man aspiring and becoming Governor of Cross River State? We make bold to state that Senator Prof Sandy ONOR is a patriotic citizen and imminently qualified to aspire for any office in the land without necessarily whipping ethnic sentiments.

    2. On the issue of Zoning, the author not only lacks the basic information but he is totally clueless on the issues bothering on the subject matter and ended up confusing himself. He stated that:
“one of the topics of discussion as the 2023 elections draws near is the rotation of the office of the Governor of the state, which has gone round the three Senatorial Districts, which was HITHERTO NOT PART OF THE AGREEMENT.”
So, what was the content of the agreement?

He went further to claim that “the South ought to have taken power back immediately after His Excellency Liyel Imoke as the POWER ROTATION was between CALABAR and OGOJA”. From the above Premise, one can easily deduce the double-tongued nature of the writer who ended up approbating and reprobating at the same time. How can someone who claimed that there was hitherto no agreement for Zoning, also claim in another twist that there was a Zoning arrangement of Power Rotation between the old CALABAR and OGOJA Province? If his claims are anything to go by, one wonders on which premise he is now basing his argument for an exclusive zoning to the Southern Senatorial District after alluding to the fact that there was never anything called Zoning in Cross River State politics. Let us further reiterate that between the period of 1999- 2019, there was never any form of Exclusive Zoning in Cross River State, as election in Cross River State was a free for all affair for the three Senatorial Districts in Cross River State. Now, let us further assume without conceding that there was an agreement for Zoning between the Calabar and Ogoja Province, who then were signatories to this zoning agreement between the Calabar and Ogoja Province? Was it a political party affair or the collective agreement of the people of the State? Put differently, are these agents of geo-ethnic division not aware that the calabar-ogoja accord was founded on a completely different aspiration located within a different geopolitical context? In any case, this accord was suggested in the hay days of the defunct cross river state, which is today Akwa ibom and the present cross river state and accordingly, the geopolitical dynamics that characterised the past and present situations are completely different.

    3. On his claim that Distinguished Senator Prof Sandy Onor is stretching his luck too far, we wish to reiterate that it is foolhardy for one to place the cart before the horse. Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor is too busy with the business of delivering the dividends of democracy to his constituents and working for the stability of the party, hence he is not perturbed by the shenanigans of people who lack the decorum to understand that POWER comes from God and not from the postulation of man about Largest or Smallest Local Government Area or even Senatorial district or ethnic group.

    4. On the claim that the Distinguished Senator has hobnobbed with different Political Parties within the last ten years,
we state without contradiction that the writer of this thrash lied from the pit of hell. Since after leaving the APP for PDP in 2002 on completion of his sterling tour as chairman of Etung, Senator Onor has remained for over a decade, consistent with the PDP, discharging roles placed on his shoulders with commendable aplomb and huge positive impact.
Sen. PROF Sandy ONOR has never been a member of ACN. Infact, the said photograph of Sandy ONOR which this serial liar cited and claimed to be a picture of Onor as an Agent of ACN was the picture taken in INEC office, Calabar with sandy Onor as the PDP agent defending the interests of the party. The issues surrounding his senatorial election in 2015 are well known by all PDP faithfuls and need no further elaboration in order to let sleeping dogs be.

    5. For emphasis, it was because of his rare leadership qualities and love for humanity, that the good people of Central Cross River Senatorial District gave him their mandate to represent them as Senator in the 9th Assembly of the Nigerian Senate, under the platform of the PDP, where he has distinguished himself in a very short time. Let us further state that the PDP faithfuls know who is with them and who is against them, and when the chips are down, they shall separate the chaff from the wheat.

Interestingly, the Distinguished Senator Sandy Onor is just too busy alongside other progressive members of his party, building bridges across all divides of our polity for the good of all the people, to concern himself with spurious accounts of ill informed paid agents.

    6. While we understand that the fictitious write-up does not represent the thoughts and best interests of the majority of the good people of the southern Senatorial District because of the inconsistencies and narrowness of the writer,
we wish to categorically state that Distinguished Senator Prof Sandy Onor is not opposed to anybody, Senatorial District or ethnic group contesting for the office of the Governor in Cross River State, come 2023.

Let it be placed on record that it was Sandy Onor, alongside other young progressives who nurtured, supported and actualized the idea of an Efik Governorship in 1999. He has therefore paid his dues as a broadminded patriot and believer in the Cross River project and would appeal to all those interested in the Governorship of Cross River State, to break free from the odious cocoon of geographic politics and endear themselves to the people based on who they are and what they can do to better the lives of majority of Cross Riverians.

On his ambition come 2023, the distinguished Senator has resolved to speak when the moment summons him and he would do so with Biblical boldness to the satisfaction of majority of PDP faithfuls and Cross Riverians at large.

    God Bless Cross River State.

    From all of us in
    THE CATERPILLAR MOVEMENT
    HON (Chief)
    Joe Obi Bisong.
