Tambuwal Consults Obasanjo, Mark, Danjuma over 2023 Presidency

    Source: THISDAY

•Dogara: My defection to APC is to rebuild party, not for presidential ambition

Sokoto State Governor, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, has begun consultations with some notable political leaders over his presidential aspiration on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

THISDAY gathered that the consultations started last Thursday when he met former Senate President, Senator David Mark, during which he discussed his ambition with him.

Tambuwal was to continue the consultation on Saturday with visits to a former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd).

The governor had met behind closed doors with Obasanjo for about an hour in his Presidential Library Pent House in Abeokuta.

A statement by Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi, had quoted the governor as saying he visited the former president to consult with him on issues concerning governance and others.

“You know Baba is our leader, statesman. And it is always good for us to come around to see how he is doing, pay homage and consult him on many issues of governance. That is why we have come this afternoon. And, we brought him the greetings and felicitations of the good people of Sokoto State,” the statement had quoted the governor, who was a leading contender for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 election season, as saying.

However, THISDAY learnt yesterday that the main reason for the visit, which the former president’s aide described as unscheduled, was for Tambuwal to feel Obasanjo’s pulse on his presidential bid.

Sources told THISDAY that after the meeting with Obasanjo, Tambuwal headed for Lagos where he held talks with Danjuma in his residence.

He was said to have briefed the former minister on his decision to vie for the presidency in 2023.

The meeting was said to have lasted for over two hours before the governor departed for Sokoto.

Investigation also revealed that as part of the series of consultations, Tambuwal had on Thursday met with Mark in his Abuja residence.

However, PDP National Working Committee (NWC) has not officially announced the party’s zoning arrangement for 2023 presidential ticket, as THISDAY gathered that the main opposition party is said to be waiting for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to make a decision before announcing from which zone its candidate would come from.

When THISDAY contacted PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, for his comment on Tambuwal’s consultations, he said zoning was not yet on the agenda of PDP.

According to him, the party is concentrating on the governorship elections in Edo, Ondo and other by-elections slated for September and October, 2020.

But another party source, who spoke on Tambuwal’s consultations, told THISDAY: “In PDP, the manner of zoning is not clear, but the governor of Sokoto State, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, stands out clearly.

“He is the youngest in the race with a loaded credentials both in the executive and legislature arms of government. Moreover, he is a lawyer. That is the judicial arm.”

According to him, Tambuwal has solid credentials that makes him fit for the job.

The governor was Speaker of the House of Representatives for four years and is about to complete his two-term tenure of eight years as governor of Sokoto State, he said, adding that he is currently the deputy chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and also the chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum.

The source explained that Tambuwal also enjoys the support of PDP governors, who form a critical power bloc in the party.

“Take it or leave it, political pundits say that he is the aspirant to beat. He carries PDP governors along with him and the South-east is merely jostling for the vice presidential position,” the source said.

The source, however, added that from the body language of a former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he is also interested in contesting the 2023 presidential election.

But he said age might not be on his side as he would be 77 years by then, noting that the belief that the performance of President Muhammadu Buhari has been impaired by old age and health challenges may make Nigerians wary of entrusting another near septuagenarian with power in 2023.

A former aide of the late President Shehu Shagari, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, had also told THISDAY that any opposition party must adopt a zoning system that would earn it votes if it is serious about winning the next presidential election.

Yakassai explained that the other political parties which are also operating a zoning principle must not tailor their zoning arrangement to suit that the ruling party.

“It does not mean that opposition party must align with the zoning arrangement of the other party. In other words, if one party produces a candidate from the North, the next one should produce from the South.

But zoning arrangement cannot prevent another party from producing candidate from the zone where the other party had produced a candidate that occupy that office at one time,” he stated.

Dogara: My Defection to APC is to Rebuild Party, Not for Presidential Ambition

Meanwhile, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, who recently defected to APC, has said his ambition for now is on how to rebuild the ruling party and not becoming a vice presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election as being rumoured.

In a statement issued yesterday by his media aide, Mr. Turaki Hassan, Dogara said: “It has come to our notice that stories and images are being circulated on social media to the effect that Hon. Yakubu Dogara is running for the office of the vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the president in 2023.

“Our initial decision was to ignore them since they are utterly baseless but it appears that the promoters of this fallacy are unrelenting in spreading the falsehood and have now succeeded in making it sound believable to the extent that even some conventional and ‘credible’ media platforms are beginning to take it up.”

Dogara urged the public to disregard the story and pictures, which he described as the handiwork of mischief makers.

He accused Bauchi State Government of sponsoring the stories and pictures to give traction to their allegation that he left PDP just because he was deceived by APC with the promise of a position in 2023.

Dogara said: “2023 is still years away, therefore, it is unnecessary, distracting and insensitive to start making unfounded declarations at this time when all hands ought to be on deck in tackling the challenges of nationhood.”

The statement added that no political party sells nomination and expression of interest forms for the post of a running mate, as a running mate is only appointed or selected by a flag bearer.

Dogara said it was preposterous for anyone to claim that someone is running for the position of vice president when no flag bearer has emerged.

Sen. Sandy Onor Eulogizes Late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka, Expresses Sadness That He Passed On At A Time He Was Gaining Momentum In The Senate

    By Admin

The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District, Sen. Prof. Sandy Onor eulogized late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka whose remains was laid to rest at his family compound, Nkwot Ikot Umo, Ikono local government area of Akwa Ibom State on the 29th August, 2020.

The distinguished senator described Hero Umoh as a man that honor God during his first encounter with him at his Lagos residence, when he visited.

Onor expressed grieve that the late Hero Umoh didn’t stay to see what God has in store for them. He was however consoled that he and Ogar his brother were able to convince him (late Hero Umoh) that the decision they took to join politics, despite his indifferent was the best and he had to accept them and their politics before his death.

The senator however expressed sadness that the late Umoh passed on at a time when he was gaining momentum in the senate.

Tribute to Late Hero Umoh Asuquo Eka – Senator Prof. Sandy Ojang Onor

“Brother Hero! I learnt to call you brother Hero through my friend, your brother, Ogar.

“It’s very painful for me to make this tribute, not because I do not know we would pass on, but honestly, I didn’t expect it would be this soon. And I’m very sure your family or none of us expected it would be this soon, but God knows best.

“Brother Hero! I got to know you before I met you. I got to know you through Ogar, my friend. He regaled me with stories about you: your simplicity, your viability, your being there for your friends and family sacrificially. Your house being haven for friends, family, for all and sundry. He told me about you being a great brother and a great man.

“I came to Lagos once when he was staying with you, and I saw all of these myself and I told my friend, you honour God.

“Many years after I had left the university and started doing politics and Ogar joined me in politics soon after he left the university and became councillor, he got stocked in politics with me.

“I remember that at some points, you didn’t believe that he took the right decision and you didn’t think that we meant well in all we said we did for our people. It took you a long time to believe us. But suddenly, we stocked to our guns, determined to prove to you and others that we meant well for our people and for all of us.

“Gradually, you started changing your mind and you accepted us and our politics and we are very happy for that.

“As God will have it, in spite of the vicissitudes we experienced in politics, the serial failures along the way, God uplifted us and gave us this opportunity to come to the Senate and represent our people.

“I was particularly happy because I had the opportunity to interact with you in Abuja. And a couple of times you came to me; we spoke about the present and the future, the dreams and hope for our people. The last time you visited, you spoke to me about meeting a minister for you, and I told you I wasn’t really a hustler and I didn’t like being seen in ministers’ offices. But for you and your person, I would do anything for you my big brother.

“About a week or two after that, you did something that as a family, we felt very excited about. You produced customised masks for me.  My wife was very excited when I told her, brother Hero produced some masks for us and she said, “that’s very nice of him. He’s beginning to accepting us the way we are”. Just yesterday, when I was already in the aircraft that it occurred to me, I forgot to bring those masks, to wear one in your honour and share the rest, but I would still do that.

“Brother Hero! When Ogar called me crying to say that you have passed on, I felt so sad. For me, it was like a dream broken and unfulfilled.

“Why would Brother Hero pass now when I was just beginning to gather momentum in the senate? Why couldn’t he see all of us and the great future that God has in store for us? But like I said earlier, God understands everything and so we leave it to Him.

“As we say in our past, you know you ‘re an EJAGHAM man matrilineally, and you know we as EJAGHAM people are matrilineal. That is why I would take you too seriously. Even if you were with us back home, you would be as important as anybody would be. And so, I would like to say to you, Brother Hero find rest in the bosom of Abraham till we meet to part no more”

Doctor Otu’s kidnap: Medical Women Association solicit help from Buhari, Minister of Women Affairs

    By George Odok Jr.

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria in Cross River has appealed to the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari and the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen to come to their aide in ensuring the immediate release of Dr Vivien Otu from captivity.

The Association also called on the Wife of the Governor of Cross River, Dr Linda Ayade, the Director General of Women Development Centre, Mrs Mary Ekpere Eta to also intervene.

The Association made the call on Sunday in Calabar in a release signed by its President and Secretary, Dr Bassey Nakanda and Dr Angella Imoke.

The release stated that the kidnapp of Dr Otu, a Senior Registrar in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health on Aug. 28, 2020 in Calabar, was condemnable.

The Association condemns in strong terms the nefarious act against her members, which they said has become a norm over the years.

They said in the release that Otu was the 16th doctor/dependents abducted within the last few years in Cross River, thereby expressing dissatisfaction that the real effect of kidnapping are not what any human should be subjected to.

“It is even worst when the victim is a woman and it affects the entire populace. Healthcare delivery is affected as all doctors feel threatened, discouraged and demoralised.

“As women and mothers, we hereby call on the state government, security agencies and relevant authorities to leave no stone unturned in bringing to an end this incessant occurrence among medical doctors and other citizens of the state and to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Dr Otu.

“We also cry out to the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of Cross River Governor, Dr Linda Ayade, Minister of Women Affairs, Director General of Women Development Centre and others to rise up and defend womanhood by employing their positions to ensure speedy and unconditional release of Dr Otu.

“We are also calling on all Civil Society Organisations, especially the International Federation of Female Lawyers, the National Association of Women Journalists and Female Society Organisations to loud their voices to the cry for the release of Dr Otu,” the release stated.

The Medical Women also joined their voices with the Nigerian Medical Association in the state to demand for the accent to the anti-kidnapping bill which was passed by the Cross River House of Assembly, by the Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade.

  • Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want And What You Can Do – By Richard F. Inoyo

Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want And What You Can Do – By Richard F. Inoyo

    By Admin

5years after the launch of Agenda 2063_ tagged: The Africa We Want, a brilliant set of initiatives geared at recreating Africa and developing the continent to emerge as a great one, not much of those initiatives have been achieved.

Hunger is still ravaging the continent, and its ageless partner_ poverty is still strongly ubiquitous across the motherland.

Although, there are series of challenges that have been identified as being responsible for the unpopularity of Agenda 2063.

Today, in a bid to help raise awareness around the agenda of the Africa We Want, I have decided among other things to spell out the 15 initiatives below for added awareness:

You can view Agenda 2063 as a set of initiatives proposed and currently under implementation by the African Union.

Historically, it was adopted on 31 January 2015 at the 24th Ordinary Assembly of the Heads of State and Governments of the African Union.

The call for such an agenda was first made by the 21st Ordinary Assembly on 26 May 2013, 50 years after the foundation of the OAU as a plan for the next 50 years.

The stated goals of the Agenda are economic development (including the eradication of poverty within one generation), political integration (in particular through the establishment of a federal or confederate United Africa), improvements in democracy and justice, establishment of security and peace on the entire African continent, strengthening of cultural identity through an “African renaissance” and pan-African ideals, gender equality, and political independence from foreign powers.

History has it that, the First Continental Report on the Implementation of Agenda 2063 was presented by President Alassane Quattara of Cote d’ Ivoire on 10 February 2020, marking the beginning of a biennial reporting cycle.

Agenda 2063 measures progress against a set of goals defined for the first Ten-Year Implementation Plan and was launched together with an interactive online dashboard showing progress in individual areas of the Agenda as well as geographical regions.

The Agenda includes 15 so-called flagship projects, which have been identified as being key to enabling and accelerating progress in all areas of development.

    These are:

    1. A high-speed train network connecting all African capitals and commercial centres.

    2. The formulation of a strategy for transforming the African economy from a supplier of raw materials to one that actively uses its own resources.

    3. The establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

    4. The introduction of the African Union Passport, and removal of all visa requirements for its holders within Africa.

    5. Ending all wars, civil conflicts, gender-based violence, and violent conflicts by 2020.

    6. The construction of a third Inga Dam.

    7. The establishment of the Single African Air-Transport Market.

    8. The establishment of an Annual African Economic Forum.

    9. The establishment of a set of financial institutions, envisaged as an African Investment Bank, a Pan-African Stock Exchange, an African Monetary Fund, and an African Central Bank.

    10. A pan-African digital data network.

    11. The development of a common African strategy for the use of outer-space technology.

    12. The establishment of an African open, digital, distance-learning university.

    13. Cooperation on cyber security.

    14. The foundation of a Great African Museum, preserving African cultural heritage and promoting pan-Africanism.

    15. The compilation of an Encyclopaedia Africana as an authoritative resource on the authentic history of Africa and African life.

You can help to spread awareness around it and participate to achieving same, after all we are here to see a better Africa.

I Disappointed Myself: Fani-Kayode Apologises For Harassing Journalist In Calabar

    By Admin

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has rendered an unreserved apology to a journalist for the verbal harassment he meted out during a recent press conference in Calabar, the Cross-River State capital.

Fani Kayode also apologised to the Nigeria Union Journalists, family members, friends, and colleagues of the Daily Trust reporter.

Speaking today during a press conference at the Government House in Uyo, the ex-minister said he disappointed himself and everyone, noting that his reaction was undefendable.

“I’m deeply sorry for the manner I reacted to the said reporter. I was too hard on him. The question was mischievous, but I fell for it,” he said.

“I should have been smarter than that. I am using this opportunity to reach out to him, and I hope he will be kind enough to forgive me.”

“I disappointed myself, my family and friends, my colleagues and even my bosses, those who hold me in high esteem.

“I have regrets, it was not my finest day. No leader or public figure should ever react like that. I disappointed myself. I deeply regret it and I believe it will never happen again.”

This comes barely three days after Fani-Kayode branded the reporter ‘stupid’.

The reporter had asked Fani-Kayode who was “bankrolling” his recent tour of several southern states, a question that irked the ex-minister.

  • Issues In The Cross River State PDP Crisis – By Barr. Vena Ikem.

Issues In The Cross River State PDP Crisis – By Barr. Vena Ikem.

    By Admin

Beyond the entertainment and the street value of the glib talk surrounding the much vaunted talk of the crisis that has engulfed the PDP chapter in Cross River State are real existential threats to the survival of the party in the state and indeed the shaping of the direction of the Politics of the state moving forward. As an active figure in the crisis, it has been difficult for me to comment much on it and so my writing on this platform as in many others has rested for a while out of understandable prudence. Everywhere I have engaged with friends and supporters I am constantly asked why I have stopped writing. The truth is that I have not stopped writing in my head. Translating what I write in my head to paper (?) Keyboard (?) Or clipboard hasn’t been that easy for me Mostly because the truth hurts and I hate to write anything but the truth.

This morning I have decided to overcome my caution and try to put in clear perspective few of the issues that to my mind reflect my understanding of the issues of the crisis. They probably boil down to just one issue:

Governor Ayade’s obsessive desire to CONTROL ALL THE LEVERS of POWER in the state!

For most us who are active Politicians does this not sound strange to us?

I believe that most of us have directly or indirectly heard the Gov’s boast that he became a Governor without structures. Or better put without structures of his own. We are also aware that the Gov throughout his first four years in office didn’t bother to establish what politicians loosely call “structures” in that same sense. The question that arises is thus: why is the Governor who rose to office without structures suddenly fighting a do or die battle for party structures? Why so when he is no longer going to be contesting a State wide Election that he is suddenly obsessed with establishing structures at the point of his departure? Why the change of strategy?

Those who argue that the Gov is entitled to do as others, say so out of blissful ignorance and I would not join issues with them. I will allow them to enjoy their blissful euphoria. I remain concerned with the substance of the WHY!

Clearly, the National Assembly members and the rest of the not-yet-conquered-by-the-food-on-table politicians feel threatened rightfully because the Ayade Government is not remarkable for keeping information from leaking. Indeed there is no secret in the Govt at all because “secrets” leak even before they have been completely formulated. The reason for this is obvious to me. The Governor’s boastfulness is the major reason. So in this case when he started boasting that he will retire every older politician in the state and prop up his own generation of leadership, he didn’t expect that others would be willing to be retired at his convenience. His determination to retire others met with a stiff resistance because nobody would take such a threat lying low.

But more fundamental is their concern for the FUTURE of our state! If the state of affairs under Gov Ayade are allowed to continue under his chosen and handpicked successor there will no longer be Cross River State because the little that is left will be shared between the two families.

Furthermore, the reality that statecraft has deteriorated to an all time low is evident. The absolute control by the Ayade family of the resources of the state to the total exclusion of all other stakeholders, leading to unprecedented hardship and poverty has made the struggle to become a popular street rebellion fueling it’s popularity to fever pitch.

The truth remains that an estimated above 90% of the population of the state support the resistance to the Governor. Prayers are said daily. Priests and pastors pray for it’s success, including his appointed prayer advisers. Traditionalists pour libations day and night. Indeed it is unfair to suggest that some of his family members are not in support of the resistance because many are. I can say this authoritatively being in the center of it all.

Consequently, Cross River State is occupying the unenviable number one spot of states in Political crisis, due simply to this unnecessary exercise in control. A deft politician would have nipped this in the bud long ago when the Congress became imminent with a simple on the table Negotiation. But no! Some not so young Turks from Yala, have decided that what they want is what is Ayade’s wish! Is it not curious that both actors for the two positions being contested that is tearing the Party apart and giving the Gov sleepless months are both from Yala?

Prudence would demand that as APC is finally putting their act together, the Gov would take a second look to realize that the challenge at hand might lead to a situation that will render all that he has achieved so far in politics nugatory. If the Senate of CRS Northern Senatorial District is lost to the opposition under his watch as sitting Gov, after losing the Federal seat in Yakuur/ Abi federal constituency, he would be finished as a politician. It would clearly show that what has been said is true that it took only his predecessor to prop him in office and without him and the National Assembly members his Politics is zero.

He should consider seriously the consequences of leaving office with his Senatorial district in the hands of the opposition, and possibly losing the state to the opposition, given the not so tidy state of affairs he knows he will be leaving behind in the state.

In saying this I am not unmindful of the fact that he is in some ceremonial talks with the opposition. As things stand, if he loses the Senate seat in the north, the value of his so called negotiation will be reduced to mockery! Yes, the opposition will still be talking and encouraging him but they will treat him like you treat the enemy you just conquered in a war. Negotiating surrender after a war is not the same as negotiating peace before the war, a fate Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu of blessed memory, tactically left to his deputy, General Effiong when he saw clearly that he had lost the Nigerian Civil war.

My penny advise: this is the time to show leadership. The more the crisis lasts the more sympathy the Gov is losing and the nearer the terminal point of his regime. Be wise!

Falling into the temptation to allow himself to be dragged down has been largely successful because the Gov took the bait of wrong advise and went into a battle he did not understand, did not prepare for because he underestimated the opposition and underestimated even more the level of disaffection within the administration which will continue to lead to sabotage and distrust within the palace! It’s downright dangerous!

    Questions to ponder would include:

*What possibly could the state executive do against a sitting Gov?
    * In all this fight what contribution has having the present state Exco added?
*The resources deployed to this fight are they justified?
    * Those collecting all the money so far spent have they given value for the money or is it just a bazaar to collect.

    * Has the fight been worthwhile or has it become an ego massage?

*Are you counting the reputation cost of the fight? Being demystified close to leaving office is it healthy?

I leave pundits to ponder on my penny thoughts. Remember leadership is not easy. It gets tested through a furnace once in a while. For Ayade this is the ultimate test of his leadership and so far he has not come to the table yet and time is running out.

    Vena Ikem.
